Welcome film lovers and filmmakers to our thirtieth anniversary
celebration! We extend a profound Thank You to all of you who may
be attending for the first time, as well as those who
have supported this non-profit cultural icon during its evolution over the
past three decades. Before proceeding to acknowledge those who have
made this enduring legacy possible, please let me share with you a few
grateful thoughts about the wellspring of our success - the magic of film.
Steven Spielberg recently observed, in comparing film to the paintings
of Norman Rockwell, which inspired him, that Rockwell’s gift was
to tell a complete story in a single frame. Although the filmmaker has the
advantages of engaging “dialogue, thunderous special effects, evocative
music, and dramatic lighting” – for Spielberg, both mediums “construct alternative
realities that nurture our love of fantasy, our sense that goodness can exist in the
world, and that ordinary people with ordinary failings can overcome the forces
that threaten our individual and collective lives”.
“A two-hour film has 172,800 frames”, says film critic David Thomson in his
book Moments that Made the Movies; and the special movie moments for the
audience are those which become memories “as potent in our imaginations as
the rooms in which we spent our childhood.”
And consider the unique intimacy of going to the movies. James Baldwin has
observed, in writing about the iconic movie stars, that “only in the movies do you
get to see other persons so intimately… intense, huge, and close up. In life, you
try not to stare at celebrities – in the movies you get two hours to do so – raptly,
even blissfully.”

And at Cinema Paradiso, thanks to our CEO and President, Gregory
Von Hausch - the great Jedi Warrior – our force for good, and the creative
genius behind all of this - and Bonnie Leigh Adams, our talented
Senior Program Director, we have consistently screened for you the
best of independent and foreign films before their availability in other
venues and before they achieve Golden Globe and Academy Award
recognition, as they often do!
A true grass roots venture, our film festival has grown from an idea
by a handful of visionaries in 1986, without a theater of its own, to an
internationally recognized cultural event and year round exhibitor of
fine films operating in its own two “Cinema Paradiso” theaters in Fort
Lauderdale and Hollywood, Florida!
None of this could have come to pass without the solid support of our members,
State and Broward County grants, assistance from the cities of Fort Lauderdale,
Hollywood and Sunrise, and, especially, the very generous financial support of the
hundreds of contributors, sponsors, and advertisers too numerous to list here!
It is my honor and privilege to follow in the footsteps of former chairpersons
who have built upon those humble beginnings, also too numerous to list, and to
serve with our outstanding Board Members and Advisory Board members and
a remarkable Staff and Volunteers described below.
What a blessing to share with you our celebration of film, our three decades
of progress – and to invite you to experience a banquet of superb selected newly
minted films from all over the world.
