ALIYAH DADA
Director: Oana Giurgiu
Romanian / 2014 / 116 min / English
In Israel, the Jewish population coming from Romania became the country’s fourth
largest group. They always stayed in the shadow, sometimes hiding their origins,
even though important personalities emerged from that community, and they have
greatly contributed to the progress of their new country. The documentary follows 130
years of immigration of Romanian Jews towards the Holy Land in a light and colorful
depiction of history through human stories and collages. The film is a tribute to the
poet Tristan Tzara – born in the same Romanian small town from where the first Jews
immigrated to Palestine in 1882.
Aliyah DaDa is one of the most pleasant and refreshing surprises of the contemporary
Romanian cinema. Film Magazine, UCIN
MEDAL OF HONOR
Director: Calin Peter Netzer
Romania / 2009 / 104 min / Romanian w/English sub-titles
75 year-old, Ion endures the silence of his wife and the indifference of his son, who
is living in Canada and resents his father for preventing him to leave the country before
the ‘89 Revolution, by denouncing him to the secret police. One day, Ion has the
surprise to receive a medal of honor from the Ministry of Defense for some 'heroic'
actions back in WW2, times he barely remembers. The medal forces Ion to reconsider
his whole life. Maybe he wasn't all the time a loser. Maybe his life has a meaning.
Maybe he means something to his family.
Medal of Honor is a happy hybrid of a festival type of movie and one that is enjoyed
by all audiences. It could be labeled as a dark comedy... Revistaclipa.com
