Revalidation for Anaesthetists
News from the RCoA CPD and Revalidation
Team
Mr C Kennedy, CPD and Revalidation Co-ordinator
The first eight months of 2015 have
been a busy time for the College CPD
and Revalidation Team. This article
provides a snapshot of some of the
areas of work which the Team is
involved in.
One key role is management of the
College CPD Online Diary, and with the
number of registered users approaching
7,400, this resource continues to be
very well used. As the system has
evolved, so too has a ‘wish list’ of future
enhancements, and implementation
of these has included the reporting
functionality for the user’s Personal
Development Plan.
It is also now a year since the College
CPD web app (CPD and Reflection ‘on
the go’) was launched, and the offline
functionality, which regularly syncs
information back to the main ‘desktop’
version of the CPD Online Diary, is a
particularly popular feature. The CPD
web app was developed in conjunction
with another Medical Royal College,
and we have been working with them
to develop additional user guidance
for the different functions of various
mobile device types.
During 2015, three new CPD Matrix
codes were successfully launched:
1F03 Information Governance, 1E06
The Prevention and Management
of Accidental Awareness under
Anaesthesia and 3A15 Anaesthesia for
Radiology. These are all important
topics and they are now being mapped
to personal activities and also by event
providers.
This year has seen a further increase in
the number of applications from event
providers seeking CPD approval, and
in a previous Bulletin a request was
made for more CPD Assessors to help
with the event reviews. The benefits of
this external process include that event
providers know CPD approval has
followed an independent, expert review,
and that the College Team sends
each CPD Assessor an annual report
detailing the event reviews they have
completed for use in their own CPD
portfolios. We have been very pleased
to welcome six new CPD Assessors into
the role.
At the start of the year we ran a survey
seeking feedback on the CPD and
Revalidation resources provided by the
College. The survey received over 700
responses and the report from it has been
published on our website. Work has been
underway on implementing the actions,
including publicising more the resources
which are available, such as Online
Learning, developing further guidance on
reflective practice, and exploring linkages
between the various College systems. The
latter will be affected by the Technology
Strategy Review at the College, and this
will be described further in the next
edition of the Bulletin.
The Revalidation Helpdesk at the
College has been established for
doctors to get generic advice, and
also to receive help with specific
circumstances by reference to one of
a team of senior clinician specialty
advisers. During 2015, there has been
an increased number of enquiries
received at the Helpdesk, including
questions on linking with a designated
body, on the appraisal process, on
returning to practice and on collecting
patient feedback. These will also be
explored further in the next edition of
the Bulletin.
The College actively engages with the
Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
(AoMRC), which comprises the 20
Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties
across the UK and Ireland, and which
speaks on standards of care and
medical education. The AoMRC has
launched a working group to review the
purpose of the patient feedback process
and what it is meant to achieve, and
also to consider the current challenges
of and barriers to collecting patient
feedback. The College is a full member
of the working group and further
updates from it will be disseminated to
the Revalidation Guidance section of
the College website.
One upcoming piece of work is the
annual quality assurance report of
the CPD approval scheme, which is
produced for the CPD Board and which
includes statistics on the number of
event applications for approval, and
a review of feedback from delegates
attending CPD-approved events. Earlier
this year we looked at the review and
quality assurance processes used by
other Colleges and Faculties for CPD
event approval, and the results will also
feature in the next report.
We hope that this update is of interest
and we welcome comments on all
aspects of the issues mentioned –
