We have over two hundred National Nature Reserves
(NNRs) in England spread throughout the country
encompassing an area of over 94000 hectares. They
were established to protect the geology, flora and fauna and help the
public and educational establishments understand the importance
of our wonderful natural heritage. Covering 0.7% of England’s land
surface, the largest is The Wash in East Anglia and the smallest in
Dorset at 0.32 hectares known as Horn Park Quarry, a geological
gem known for its many fossils. Sadly, it is not open to the public
because it needs to be totally protected and there is a fear that
inappropriate fossil collecting would damage its rock formation.
Most NNRs are managed by Natural England and the remaining
by organisations approved by them such as the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds (RSPB), National Trust or Local Authority. There
are thirty-seven NNRs in the South East and those that are managed
by Natural England are free to enter making it a relatively cheap day
out for a family.
Dungeness, in Kent is one of the oldest nature reserves and is
managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Its 1000
hectares is especially impressive in winter where you can see hundreds
of water birds on the lakes, take in the unusual but breath-taking
landscape and understand why this is a site of special scientific interest.
Blean Woods near Canterbury is one of the oldest ancient broadleaf
woodland in Southern England and covers approximately 90
hectares. Managed by a consortium including the local authorities,
Blean is home to an amazing assortment of wildlife and spectacular
plants. There are nature trails marked out including one that has
wheelchair access. www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/seenature/
Lewes Down, Mount Caburn managed by the NNR in conjunction
with the owners, The Glynde Estate is a chalk hill and valley of
49 hectares, clothed in rich grassland, where you can spot burnt-tip
orchids and sweet briar roses as well as marjoram, horseshoe vetch
and other sun-loving chalk plants. Mount Caburn is the best
preserved Bronze Age hill fort in Sussex. I’m told if you are lucky
you might just catch sight of the peregrine falcon but I have to say I
haven’t seen one and I used to live near here. To find out more visit
