SMOKE SIGNALS For your safety, Clanmil’s homes are fitted with smoke detectors. In the event of a fire, a smoke detector could give you those precious few minutes of warning to allow you and your family to get out of your home safely. On occasion a few tenants have tampered with or removed these detectors, putting their own and their family’s lives at risk. Please don’t tamper with the smoke detectors in your home! If your smoke alarm starts beeping intermittently, this indicates that the battery needs replaced. This is your responsibility and you are putting yourself and your home at risk if you don’t do this promptly. If you are unable to do this, please let you scheme coordinator, housing or maintenance officer know. Also, please remember to test your smoke alarm regularly. The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service recommends that you do this every week. STAYING SOCIAL AND SAFE Social media has taken the world by storm. It seems like everyone’s talking about Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! It’s such a great way to stay connected with friends and family, but there are some risks with using social media and even the internet. To make sure you stay safe and that all of your personal details and private information is kept secure, have a look at these top tips for internet and social media safety… Think Before You Share Whenever you're about to post something online, just imagine someone in authority or someone who you respect, reading that post or looking at that photo. If that feels uncomfortable, don't post it. Got a nickname? Think about using a nickname instead of your real name if you're signing up to sites such as Twitter. And remember, only connect with people you know! Check your settings Use the privacy and security settings on social media sites so that only your friends and family can see your pages. Also encourage friends and family to turn on these settings too. Guard personal information Don't post information such as your address, email address or mobile number online. By sharing this information, you could make yourself vulnerable to identity fraud. A picture speaks a thousand words Avoid posting photos of your home, work, school or places you're associated with. Remember, once you've put a picture of yourself online, other people may be able to see it and download it. It won’t be just yours any longer. Keep it to yourself Don't give out information online simply because it's asked for. Think! Who is asking for this information? Do they really need it? When registering with a website or signing up for a newsletter, always provide the minimum amount of information possible. PM or comment? Direct message or private message functions are accessible on all social media platforms. If you're having a personal chat, this is the best option to go for - unless you don't mind sharing your conversation with millions of other users. Get anti-virus software Make sure you have anti-virus software installed on your computer and be careful what you download or install onto your computer.
