POPPHOTO @BONNIERCORP.COM Re “Five Ways to Flatter Anyone” (September 2014): If you want someone viewing your photos to admire the subject, photograph from the ground up, or at least knee-level, especially for insects, pets, children, or the pope. If you want the viewer to disparage the subject, then climb above them and shoot down. If you want the viewer to see the subject as an equal, then go for the hip/ chest-level shot so the viewer sees eye-to-eye with the subject. I have followed these guidelines for more than 60 years, but they still work! Rico Leffanta IN “CAT FIGHT” (Fix It Fast, December 2014), I would have brought the fix time down to 0 minutes. How? Leaving the splash trail, for one. It gives the picture movement. Hard to make a judgment from a magazine reproduction, but the color correction seems to have given the “After” image a red cast that was missing in the “Before” shot. R. Ball San Dimas, CA FROM FACEBOOK A READER QUESTIONED the accuracy of our exposure data for Richard Bernabe’s photo of a bear in “Conquer the Light” (September 2014), taken in full sun at 1/640 sec and f/5.6, ISO 800, saying that these settings would have overexposed the scene. BERNABE RESPONDED: “I purposely push all of my image data on the histogram to the right, short of making the highlights pure white. This allows me to capture more colors and tones while keeping image noise and posterization to a minimum. On my LCD, the image might look washed out and much too bright, but during the processing of the RAW file, I correct this with the Exposure slider, restoring the tones to where I want to display them. In this example, I processed the file 1.67 stops darker than where I captured it, which explains the apparent disconnect between the exposure settings and the final image.” AN ARTICLE that photographer Jason Nakleh wrote for PopPhoto.com, “How-To: Concert Photography with Strobes and Flashes,” drew a lot of debate on Facebook. For instance: Studio strobes? Get some f/2.8 glass and do it right. I have long struggled with the word “professional” in regard to photography and have been irked by it. Is it someone with a degree? Someone who does weddings? Is it even relevant? I suppose it is to some extent, with the availability of great digital cameras to the masses and to people who never learn the craft—those who won’t push on into f-stops, depth of field, exposure, and composition— people who never find their own vision. He says he was struck by the way the lines of the buildings met other elements in the frame to form new shapes. Edited in Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud. 2nd Place $200 Prize RON SPOHN, 44, GRAPHIC DESIGNER/PHOTOGRAPHER/VIDEOGRAPHER, REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA While hiking in South Lake Tahoe, Ron Spohn discovered this incredible view from the trail. “I wanted to capture the color of the entire scene,” he says. “The rock wall and reflection were breathtaking.” Spohn mounted his camera on a tripod and used a long exposure and a Lee polarizing filter as the sun was setting.
