The exposure was 1/100 sec at f/5.6. Beach Blanket Binki This month’s cover girl was 3-year-old “Binki” Gessner, pouting behind a strategically placed towel. This appealing photo was taken by Ruth Bushman of Philadelphia using a 4x5 Super-D Graflex fitted with a 190mm Ektar f/5.6 lens. Bushman used three #22 flashbulbs and “open flash” technique, in which the shutter was opened in ambient light, 60 YEARS AGO We reported on the launch of Tri-X, Kodak’s new super-fast, highquality film. the bulbs fired, and the shutter then closed. Her exposure on Kodak Ektachrome Type B film was f/16 with an 81EF color balancing filter. Medium-Format “Klunker” The potential value of a medium-format SLR had long been recognized, with several well-regarded models on the pre-war Profile of a Master One of the most significant features in this issue was a portfolio of photographs by Edward Weston, one of the greatest camera artists ever. Here is an excellent but less famous example of his work, characterized by both simplicity and superb image quality. The sheer beauty of Weston’s images was due in part to his use of 8x10 view cameras, as fully described in a technical profile by features editor Arthur A.
