HORSE TALE
Erika
enduring traditions
ERIKA LARSEN
I WAS TAKEN with how significant
the horse still is to many Native
American cultures: Horse skills are
coveted and horse adornments are
precious. It’s common for families to
pass down clothes through generations,
keeping them as sentiments
that represent their people. I took this
photo of Katie Harris, a member of
the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla
Indian Reservation, in Pendleton,
Oregon, in 2011. She had made the
dress and most of her horse’s regalia.
She spent a year crafting new pieces,
because what little her family had
was ruined in a flood. Rather than
viewing this as a loss, she turned
toward the future, saying, “I’m creating
my own family history now—this
shows that my culture is living.”
