Kwame Nkrumah Interchange<br />
Ghana’s total motorable road<br />
network stands at 71,063<br />
km. One of the key planks<br />
of President Mahama’s<br />
transformation agenda is<br />
to expand and modernizse<br />
the road network. This is a<br />
prerequisite to open up the<br />
country in order to reduce<br />
road traffic accidents and<br />
congestion, boost economic<br />
activities and move goods<br />
and services freely.<br />
Unparalled investments have been<br />
made in road projects across the<br />
country in the last few years. The<br />
five year, GH¢3 billion, Cocoa Roads<br />
Improvement Programme (CRIP)<br />
has commenced with ongoing<br />
construction of several roads in<br />
cocoa-growing areas.<br />
Beyond the massive road<br />
construction in cocoa growing areas,<br />
other road projects funded from<br />
various sources are underway. A<br />
summary of the regional breakdown<br />
of these road projects is as follows:<br />
Greater Accra Region<br />
In the Greater Accra Region, major<br />
road projects such as the Kwame<br />
Nkrumah Interchange, the Ring<br />
Road Flyover, the Awoshie-Pokuase<br />
Road (including a community<br />
upgrading component comprising<br />
14 schools, a market, a lorry station,<br />
two health facilities at Ofankor and<br />
Amasaman and water projects),<br />
the Giffard Road, the Burma Camp<br />
Road Phases 1 and 2, the Spintex<br />
Road by-pass, the Boundary<br />
Gulf House Road, the Teshie-<br />
Nungua-Sakumono Beach Road,<br />
the Ashaiman Road and some of<br />
the Gang of Four Roads (Tetteh-<br />
Quarshie Interchange– Adenta and<br />
the Achimota Ofankor), among<br />
others, have either been completed<br />
or are close to completion.<br />
Additional resurfacing works<br />
will also be executed in Ningo<br />
–Prampram, Tema, Ashaiman,<br />
Nungua, Teshie, La and Accra<br />
Central. Preparatory works for<br />
the redevelopment of the Accra-<br />
Tema Motorway into a six-lane<br />
road with four interchanges (Adjei<br />
Kojo, Abattoir, Teshie Link, Tema<br />
Roundabout) have begun. Several<br />
roads in Accra are also being<br />
asphalted.<br />
Eastern Region<br />
In the Eastern Region, work on the<br />
Suhum, Asamankese and Kyebi<br />
town roads have commenced.<br />
The procurement of works on<br />

These works are being funded by<br />
the Cocobod. Work has resumed<br />
on the Kwafokrom-Apedwa<br />
Road and the south-bound<br />
carriageway is completed. Other<br />
roads, either completed, under<br />
construction or awarded for<br />
construction in the region include<br />
the Nsawam-Apedwa, the Adomi<br />
Bridge which is scheduled to be<br />
completed in 2015, Koforidua-<br />
Bunso, Nsawam-Aburi, Nkawkaw<br />
by-pass, Nkawkaw-Atibie and<br />
Suhum-Asamankese. The contracts<br />
awarded for the rehabilitation of<br />
Adeiso–Asamankese, Nsawam–<br />
Asamankese, Osenase–Akwatia,
