George Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Carver was born <strong>in</strong>to<br />
slavery <strong>in</strong> southwestern Missouri dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
Civil War. A sickly child, Carver threw himself<br />
<strong>in</strong>to education and was admitted to Iowa’s<br />
Simpson College as the only African-American<br />
student, eventually jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the faculty<br />
after graduat<strong>in</strong>g. He would then head the<br />
agriculture department at Tuskegee University,<br />
where he devised agricultural <strong>in</strong>novations,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g new uses for peanuts and sweet<br />
potatoes, His work paved the way for modern<br />
advances <strong>in</strong> biofuels . <strong>Gay</strong> rumors followed<br />
Carver at Tuskegee, which were not dispelled<br />
when he and his research assistant, Aust<strong>in</strong><br />
W<strong>in</strong>gate Curtis, Jr., began liv<strong>in</strong>g together.<br />
