Palm Springs Modernism And Art Fair week
During Valentine weekend a major international
art and design event was taking place
in Palm Springs. Modernism Week and
the Palm Springs Art Fair attract galleries,
collectors, art, design, and architectural
enthusiasts from all over the United States
and foreign countries.
Modernism Week is in it’s tenth year as a
major event in Palm Springs. This year the
epicenter, or CAMP, for directing the activities
of the event, was located in the former
Alley imports building on South Palm
Canyon. Modernism events included, tours
of mid century buildings and homes, talks
by architectural icons, displays,
of home furnishings, including, furniture,
appliances, decorative accessories and art.
Included this year was the Christopher
Kennedy Show House. The house, located
off of South Palm Canyon, was a project
directed by Christopher Kennedy. Kennedy
is a popular designer working in New York,
Los Angeles, and Palm Springs. This project
was unique and involved several designers.
Each designer was assigned a room in
the house. The challenge was to design the
room utilizing their individual creativity,
but to correlate to the overall inclusive design
arrangement of the entire house.
Palm Springs Convention Center. This
year there were galleries featuring artist
from throughout the United States, and
including, London, the UK, Venezuela, and
Argentina.
The art was a broad range of media, including
2 and 3 dimensional works. One
interesting, multidimensional, display
was located in the lobby of the convention
center. It was titled “Suspended Boulder”,
and was the creation of Stephen Webster.
We will have a feature article on Stephen
in a later issue. The variety of contrasting
art styles featured by the various galleries,
is displayed in the examples of the two
photos included in this article. An acrylic
painting by Sam Francis, untitled, provided
by the Nathan Novak Gallery, is an
example of mid century abstraction. The
other example is a graphite drawing, titled,
“Talons”, by Kerry Brooks, shown by Arcadia
Contemporary Gallery, as an example
of hyper-realism almost more realistic than
a photograph.
We are fortunate to live in Palm Springs
where art, architecture and creativity are all
around us. If you missed these events this
year, plan for next to have an adventure in
creativity and culture. If you missed these
THAT IS FUNNY
A Kentucky redneck and an Ohio buckeye are night fishing on their respective sides of the
Ohio River.
As soon as the redneck puts his line in the water, he slings a fish onto the bank. The buckeye
isn’t catching anything, so he yells across to the redneck, “Buddy, I’d sure like to be on
your side of the river!”
“Alright, tell ya what -- I’ll shine my flashlight ‘cross this river, and you can walk across
this little beam of light!” the redneck yells back.
The buckeye replies, “Ain’t no way, buddy. You must think I’m a fool. I know when I get
halfway ‘cross, you’ll turn your flashlight off!”
When I see lovers’ names carved in a tree, I don’t think it’s sweet. I just think it’s surprising
how many people bring a knife on a date
It is so cold outside I saw a politician with his hands in his own pockets.
My dog used to chase people on a bike a lot. It got so bad, finally I had to take his bike
away.
WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS
ARIES (March 21-April 19):
Spokes on the wheel aren’t always
easy to just grease. Toss some
elbow work in if you want the
gears to turn.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20):
Silence is only golden when it’s
warranted. If you see something
out of the ordinary, speak your
mind. Don’t regret the quiet later.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Cautious
and steady isn’t always the
most practical of methods. Mix it
up a little bit. Taking a risk now
and then can pay off.
CANCER (June 21-July 22):
There’s change in the air. Grasp
it now before it escapes out the
window. You might not know if
there’ll be more on the horizon.
LEO (July 23-Aug 22): Test your
mind every day. The brain can be
just as much a muscle as the rest.
But it still needs to be flexed.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 22): It
can feel like love is just out of
reach, but still in the eye’s view.
If there’s someone you’re secretly
feeling things about, gauge theirs
towards you.
LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Every so
often, the staleness and stagnation
of routine can seem maddening.
Tweak a few details here and
there to stave off the inanity.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21):
Tough times are hardly new, with
or without a recession. Tighten
up your purse-strings now in
order to enjoy the fruits later.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21):
Finding something perplexing?
Take a step back and ask for
someone else to take a stab. Fresh
eyes are better than weary ones.
LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Stress
can build up over time if you let
yourself bottle it in. Find outliers
for the strain. Take a run or hit
the gym. Release the excess.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Be
smart about your next moves.
Life can be a bit like chess; a pawn
can become a queen, but it can
also be easily slain.
PISCES (Feb 19-March 20): Moderation
can be your friend just
as much as it can be your enemy.
Too much and you’re overdoing
it. Too little and you feel empty.
