Words from the AMSA President
2 Australian Medical Students’ Association
Whether it’s taken you four, five, six or more years, making it to the final stages of
medical school is an incredible achievement! AMSA hopes you’ve enjoyed every
moment of it, from tutorials and lectures to Convention, and everything in between.
The wide world of medicine now awaits you. Before you get there, however, there
are important choices to be made. Now is a critical time for planning your internship
for next year, the first stepping-stone for further training.
This year’s application process will be difficult for some, as the rising number of
graduates pushes the system to its capacity for internships and further training.
AMSA continues to advocate for an internship for all graduates of Australian
medical schools, including international students. Further details of these
challenges are available in the pages that follow.
Many factors influence a student’s choice of where to undertake their internship:
geography, salary, family and friends to name a few. For some, it comes down to
‘the vibe’ of a place. The AMSA Intern and Resident’s Guide is produced each year
to assist students to make that complex choice.
AMSA hopes you find this guide to be a useful reference for this important stage of
your career, and wishes you all the very best wherever you may go!
