WELCOME
Kate & Becky
Welcome to our April issue.
Spring is sprung and there’s so much to look forward to with lighter
nights, milder weather (we hope) and more opportunities to get outside
and enjoy the lovely area in which we live.
In this month’s issue, there’s an election message from Councillor Shaun
O’Neill reflecting on his last four years in office and looking forward to
hopefully four more years. With the Flying Scotsman recently being
brought back into service, he also writes about his childhood memories
of train spotting and the tragedy which occurred in 1899 on the
Rochdale to Bacup line which weaved its way from Rochdale to
Wardleworth and then onto Shawclough, passing under Whitworth
Road.
There’s also a fascinating article written by local historian Gary Heywood
–Everett on the Norden Riviera, also known as ‘Rochdale by the Sea’.
For those of you who remember this well known landmark, it was
Rochdale’s own heated open-air pool based on Edenfield Road in
Norden, packed with locals using the diving boards and slides or just
hanging around in the spectator stands, cafes and gardens.
Another well known landmark, Heaton Hall based in Heaton Park, is
also featured on pages 34&35. With a renovation programme
underway, it is looking forward to inviting people back for both weddings
and events as well as simply to view the beautiful decorative interior
features.
Remember that Streetwise provides the best and most cost effective way
for local businesses to promote their services – find out what some of
our customers are saying about us on pages 36&37. We have also
been provided with some wonderful testimonials from the local groups
and charities that we support in our monthly issues.
Until next month…..
