Welcome to our

October issue

Welcome back after the summer break!

With three issues to go before the Christmas

break, we are looking forward to bringing you the

usual selection of local businesses advertising

their services as well as news and info about

everything taking place locally.

This month is no exception, and the community

pages are brimming with so many interesting

articles including one on the River Beal Café

which since its opening in August 2020, has

been a great meeting place for community groups

as well as dog walkers and ramblers.

This year’s Milnrow Calling Festival was a

phenomenal event and one of the best examples

of the local community as well as businesses

coming together with Andy Kelly providing us

with some great memories of a wonderful day on

pages 42 and 43.

On page 41 you can read all about the renovation

work which is taking place to Rochdale Town Hall

and how the restoration of this iconic building will

eventually return it to the splendour of when it first

opened in 1871.

Until next month…

Communication is key

in the Early Years

Communication and language is one of the three prime areas in the Early

Years Foundation Stage. At The Ark we recognise the importance of this and

have spent a lot of time researching and training around this area of learning.

We would like to share with you some top tips and strategies to support this

area of learning.

1. Make sure that you have the child’s attention

when you are communicating with them. Get

down to their level and ensure that they are

looking at you. This way they will be able to pick

up on any non-verbal communications, such as

actions, facial expressions or gestures that could

support the understanding of what is being said.

2. When giving instructions make sure that they

are clear and given one at a time in the order

it needs to take place. If they find it hard to

understand then give instructions one at a time

with gestures.

3. When communicating with children make sure

they have time to think and respond. At nursery

we follow a 10 second rule where we wait

and listen for up to 10 seconds for a child to

respond. Try it and see what happens.

4. Ask fewer questions and commentate play. For

example, instead of asking “What colour is that

car” when a child is playing with a toy car, say

“A red car”. This method supports children’s

learning and development and gives them the

confidence to use the language in context.

5. Repeat what a child has said adding clarity

where needed and more words. For example if

a child is playing with a yellow car and they say

“Yewoah” then repeat “Yes, yellow car” with a

big smile on your face.

“The first five years have

so much to do with how the

next 80 turn out”

Bill Gates Sr., co-chair of the Bill

and Melinda Gates Foundation

RIVER BEAL CAFÉ COMES OF AGE

Great coffee, great times and great people

at Milnrow’s community café

River Beal Café is approaching its second birthday. Since

opening in Autumn 2020, the Milnrow based coffee shop

has established itself as a place where communities come

together. It is a hive of activity with local groups using

the café, from arts and crafts groups to spoken word

performances and even a Ukulele band! It has also gained a

great following with dog walkers and ramblers.

The community café offers great coffee as well as builder’s tea and good honest

food from cheese paninis to meat pies and all at down to earth prices! You can

pay by card as well as cash and pre-order by telephone. Where it differs from its

multinational rivals is the fact you could have a taste of Lancashire as well as Seattle!

In the last year, River Beal Café has joined the Chatty Café Scheme which means

that it prides itself as being a place for lively conversation, a chance to put the mobile

phones away and enjoy a cosy chat. It is one of many places under the Rochdale

Safe Place Scheme, which offers a safe place of refuge for people in distress. The

café’s welcoming atmosphere is also extended to our furry friends which means you

can pop it at anytime whilst out on a dog walk.

The café is run by Future Directions CIC, a Chadderton-based provider of personcentred

social care for people with complex care needs. In addition to being a focal

part of the community, it provides work experience for people with additional needs

and mental health issues. Each of its Baristas gain valuable experience in working

as part of a team and they all take great pride in customer service, as well as making

great coffee!

Plans were made for the café’s development in 2019 and all went well until the

first lockdown which meant that the café’s opening in Spring 2020 was delayed

till October 2020. Lockdown measures meant it could only operate as a takeaway

before closing and reopening in Spring 2021. Since then, it has found its feet,

coming into its own as a valuable community hub.

With excellent coffee, a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and all at a great price, the

River Beal café has it all. So, whether you fancy a quick brew or a full cooked breakfast,

why not pop in and see for yourself, we very much look forward to seeing you!

River Beal Café is open from 10am to 5pm from Monday

to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

It is also a five-minute walk away from Milnrow Metrolink tram stop.

You can also telephone on 07529 224941.

Rochdale Town Hall, a masterpiece

deserving of celebration

Rochdale Town Hall, widely regarded as one of the finest in

the country, is currently undergoing a multi-million pound

restoration which includes £8.9m from the lottery fund.

Phase two of the project is under way with the town hall due to reopen

next year in late summer 2023.

The aim is to return it to the original splendour of when it first opened

in 1871 and for it to be a building for the enjoyment of everyone.

Rooms are being developed into exhibition spaces to tell Rochdale’s

story alongside a new Bright Hall for events.

The Bright Hall is named after Rochdalian John Bright, a politician

and mill owner from the 1800s. He famously led the repeal of the Corn

Laws which placed tariffs on food imports making it too expensive to

bring in cereals from abroad, creating food shortages.

As you can imagine, the work taking place is comprehensive.

Renovations are taking place from the ground up to the installation

of a new roof. Hidden improvements include developing a more

environmentally friendly building including installing new insulation.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equalities, safety and

reform at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The restoration and

the way the town hall will subsequently be used for all residents is

fantastic news for the borough.

“The building is a beacon for the whole region, it displays magnificent

gothic architecture and once complete will continue to shine for

generations to come.”

Much of the cleaning and repair is being carried out on site, especially

to the stained glass that adorns the building throughout. Some of that

has been transported to York for key preservation.

Most significantly the town hall is being made accessible. There will

be new ramps to make getting into the building easier and a new lift is

being installed.

Outside, the area is being completely landscaped with some new

grassed areas to complement new paving in a new Town Hall Square

that will be used for events.

Integral to the project are the large number of local residents who

have volunteered to give their time in assisting with the restoration

work. Their efforts have been key to driving the project forward and in

keeping it running to schedule.

One thing the town hall team are proud to be delivering upon opening is a new Welcome Gallery.

This will feature items and photographs that portray memories associated with the town hall.

Donations or long-term loans are still welcome, plus stories you may have that will remind visitors

of times past from events like festivals to other public gatherings.

Milnrow Calling 2022

The second Milnrow Calling

festival took place over the first

weekend of September at Milnrow

Cricket Club. Over one thousand

local people attended the daylong

celebration of live music acts,

food and fun.

I had the pleasure of being asked

to compere for the day and my first

thoughts as the day started were that it

couldn’t possibly go any better than the

previous year’s event. Milnrow Calling 2021

was for many the first time they had been

anywhere in almost 2 years as it was the

first big event after Covid restrictions

were lifted. The opposite happened and

people immediately knew what to do and

how to approach the day. It was like the

positivity and excitement had carried

over from the previous year.

On arrival there were a variety of mobile

food stands, all freshly made by local

companies. The bar was run by the

cricket club and there were a variety of

kids stalls including sweets, hair braiding,

face painting and bouncy castles.

Speaking of bouncy, the smaller of the

two stages was an inflatable dome whilst

the larger at the end of the field was a

rigid construction. The operators upped

their game this year with some superb

light shining on both stages which really

came to life at dusk!

First up and kicking the festival off, were

the ever reliable and well-loved Milnrow

Brass Band. “Mighty Milnrow” as they are

affectionally known, have been making

music since 1862 and are a championship

section band. To use an analogy, they

premiership and at one point recently

they were ranked number 20 brass band

IN THE WORLD. We are lucky to have them

and it’s great to see them at regular

points throughout n the year. What made

their performance - incredibly timed to

the strains of the 633 squadron- was the

overhead pass from a WW2 spitfire!

Next up was local singer song writer with

Leah Fisher her acoustic guitar. Despite

only being 20 years old, Leah has already

built up a reputation as one of the best

local female vocalists around.

Following on from their appearance at

last year’s event, the Frozen Duo, a couple

of Disney Princesses, banged out modern

and classic Disney songs. As well as

being extremely polished, well costumed

and with huge vocal power, what made

these two unique was their audience

interaction.

Next on the main stage were Classic

Rock Revival who relived the glory days

of classic rock from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

They are a full 8-piece band all the way

from London who knocked out classics

from genre-defining artists such as

Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC,

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, and Steely Dan.

After a short break it was back to the

inflatable stage for “Rochdale’s Premier

Maricahi Band “Juan Direction.” Juan

D as they are known to their friends are

actually distant cousins of the Rochdale

favourite Irish Rock band The Scattering,

and the crowd were treated to a range of

Mariachi styled classics singalongs such

as Delilah, Don’t you want me, and I Want

to Break Free.

are in the footballing equivalent of the

With a reputation that needs little

introduction, Stax of Soul were next up.

A 9-piece function and party band born

and bred in Manchester, they describe

themselves as ‘The Real Deal’ with

genuine, finger-popping, foot tapping,

high energy, full-on party performance.

“JK as Robbie” has toured 19 countries

worldwide and has played to over 2

million people in live performances, and

he was the penultimate act at Milnrow

2022. He has appeared on many major TV

channels throughout the world and has

been recognised by the man himself and

throughout the performance, his looks

and mannerisms were absolutely spot on.

Closing the festival was MJ the legacy, a

jaw-dropping tribute to Michael Jackson

celebrating the music and career of the

undisputed ‘King of Pop’ with a live band

and backing dancers. MJ was performed

by CJ who looked and sounded every

inch the real deal and the audience

were treated to the full effect of the

lighting show that accompanied the

performance.

Overall, a great event for the local

community and local businesses.

PARK AND WALK No 6 - TUNSHILL

This is another in our series of short easy walks

designed especially for those who want to start

regular leisurely walks for health and fitness

value. Less than 1.5 miles (2km) long from

the centre of Milnrow you are soon in lovely

countryside.

OUR ROUTE

We start at Butterworth Hall. Park your car in

the Charles Lane Car Park at the side of the

Community Centre and opposite the Milnrow

Pre School.

This lane terminates into a single width

footpath. Take the path on the right and

continue along it still with the sports field on

your right. The path is lined with foliage, Rowan,

Hawthorn, Oak etc and beings you to Tunshill

Golf Course.

Walk up the wide tree lined lane to the right of

P. N. Daly works entrance. This extends up past

Hollingworth Academy left, and their school

sports field right.

Cross over the small stile onto the golf course,

but be aware of the danger of flying golf balls

from all directions! Take the Route down right,

along a single width path marked by yellow

posts.

Continue down, crossing a Golfers path, down

between trees and bushes emerging at another

single width cross path. Go left up this hill

path with the Golf Course and Shelter on your

left, past the exit from the Golf Course with

waymarker sign, and descend down the path

over another small stile and onto a wooden

footbridge.

With the M62 motorway on the left, and the

Golf Course now over to the right, the path

emerges at a stile at Moy Hill, near the M62

underpass. Continue down Water Lane with

the Brook on the right emerging back at the

Waggon Inn and our Butterworth Hall

starting point.

The footbridge spans the source of the

Butterworth Hall Brook. Cross the footbridge

and follow the field path.

Our Group

According to recent press releases GP’s

are to start prescribing walking and cycling,

as part of a nationwide trial to help improve

mental and physical well-being. The Dept of

Transport announced £12.7 million has been

given to 11 local authorities to fund the pilot

social prescriptions. Unfortunately, our Local

Authority is not included in the scheme, but

here in Milnrow and Newhey, our Group have

long advocated walking for health, and for

GP’s to prescribe such measures.

We meet at Milnrow Library every Monday

morning from 9.30am, leaving out at 10am

on separate walks around our local

countryside. Our walks are free and friendly

and designed for people of all abilities, and

offer walking in safe and social groups, led by

Volunteer Walk Leaders.

New walkers are welcomed, as are children

accompanied by a responsible adult.

UPDATE FROM ST THOMAS’, NEWHEY AND ST JAMES’, MILNROW

With the arrival of October comes

the celebration of our harvest festival

It’s a time to be thankful for all the good things we have, for the beautiful place we live

in and the food we eat. In times of plenty it’s easy to forget to be thankful, we are used

to going to the supermarket and getting whatever we need. This October though, as we

begin to feel the rising cost of living bite, perhaps we are more aware of how lucky we are

if we have enough food to eat and can heat our homes reasonably well.

Karl Marx said “religion is the opium of the masses”. In other words, the purpose of

religion is to make the poor quietly accept their poverty in the hope that it will be better

in the next life. Karl Marx was wrong, though it is an understandable mistake given the

attitudes of many people who claimed to be religious at the time. You see, Christianity is

based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and particularly on the two rules he said were the

most important:

1. Love God

2. Love other people as much as you love yourself.

God created a world that could support the people and animals that live on it as long as

we look after it properly and share it’s bounty fairly. The trouble is – we don’t, do we?

We use and don’t replenish, we waste and litter, we sit on what we don’t need and ignore

those who do need it. And we’re ungrateful. As soon as it doesn’t go our way we moan

and blame God or someone else for the mess we have made.

It doesn’t have to be like this. The kingdom of God is coming, in fact it is already here,

breaking through when we least expect it, giving us hope. But we can’t just sit and wait,

that isn’t what God intends or Jesus told us. We have to help it along.

Which brings us back to rule 2, Love other people as much as you love yourself. Many

of us struggle to really love, we don’t even love ourselves properly – and I’m not talking

about romance but deep, real care for the wellbeing of someone. God loves us (all of us,

even the ones nobody else loves) so we should try and do the same.

That means standing up to injustice, pointing out inequality, arguing against selfishness

and greed. We need to give others the hope of the kingdom that is coming, not just in the

next life but here and now if we all work together. Which will make us the very opposite

of the drugged, accepting masses that Karl Marx thought religious people were.

I know that it sounds worryingly like I’m suggesting we all get out in the street and

protest (and for some it may well be that) but we can also have a quiet revolution up here

in the hills. If we share what we do have and refuse to buy into the greed and arrogance

that is so common in our society at the moment, we will find ourselves in a better and

happier place, even in these difficult times. And please, as the cold weather comes, lets

look out for those we think might be struggling, even if it’s only inviting them in for a

brew it could make more difference than you think.

Revd Janet Pitman

Opened in May

2022, Jolly Josh

is a fully inclusive,

purpose-built

centre that offers

accessible

play-based

sessions for

children with

complex needs

and their families

from the Borough

of Rochdale. Jolly

Josh is a place where children feel safe,

secure, and have their physical needs met,

enabling them to #ConnectSupportThrive.

The team at Jolly Josh are urging the families

of those who can benefit from the inclusive,

tailored, free of charge sessions, to come along

to Jolly Josh, which is based at Ensor Mill,

Queensway, Castleton.

“We have a timetable of age-appropriate

sessions for children and young adults between

0 and 19”, explained Lead Session Facilitator,

Rachel Bell. “The Centre has a range of

equipment to enable everyone access to play

and socialize. We now hold 8 sessions across

the week including evenings and weekends

and on Tuesday mornings we also invite a

visiting professional to provide valuable advice

in an informal setting” added Rachel.

Beginning in October, visitors can also benefit

from the Centre’s new Hydrotherapy Pool.

Hydrotherapy sessions are a multi-sensory

environment which help to stimulate a child’s

senses at the same time as having a calming

effect for those with physical, sensory and

learning difficulties.

“All of our sessions have such a positive impact”

added Rachel, “It’s also an opportunity for

parents and carers to meet up with and support

each other, connect with visiting professionals

and spend quality time creating special forever

memories”.

Jolly Josh is a Registered Charity based in

Castleton which was founded by devoted

mum Carole following the passing of her son

Josh, at just 15 months old. A healthy child at

birth, Josh’s health deteriorated at 4 months

of age and Carole’s journey and experiences

before his passing inspired her to establish

the specialist Centre, Jolly Josh.

5 years on and having received fantastic

support, Jolly Josh opened a brand-new

centre in Castleton solely for children with

Profound and Multiple Learning disabilities,

complex medical needs or physical disability.

Jolly Josh provides children of varying age

groups in the Borough with a safe place to

meet and engage with other children, along

with peer support for their families. Jolly
