Friends of Syke

and Cronkeyshaw

Friends of Syke and Cronkeyshaw

to be Entered into the

Rochdale in Bloom Competition!

The Friends have had a busy couple of months delivering exciting

projects for the area.

To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee,

volunteers planted a herb garden in the

spiral at the end of Syke Pond (originally

a sand pit.)

The feature will improve the part of the

Common and it will be entered into the

Rochdale in Bloom competition.

Chair of the Friends Richard Lord said:

“The herb garden was planted by eight

volunteers who planted sage, thyme,

rosemary, bay trees, fennel, lavender,

mint and curry plants. It was wet and a bit muddy but everyone worked

hard and it looks great. I want to thank everyone who helped out. It is a great new

feature.”

The historic garden at the south of Syke Pond is also set for improvements.

This area, which contains engraved stones showing information about the place,

has been missing a large number of flag stones for some time and has become

untidy. The flags are planned to be replaced and the area tidied up.

There are other projects and ideas in the pipeline.

Anyone is welcome to attend FOSAC meetings which usually take a

place at Syke Community Base. Meetings times are communicated on

our Facebook page and on notice boards. The full list of projects and

suggestions is included in the files section on our Facebook page.

Syke Walk & Talk Group

WATERGROVE AND SHORE

This is a walk of 6.5 miles to Watergrove

Reservoir and on to Shore with one steep hill.

Setting off from Syke Chapel walk Northwards

along Dewhirst Road passing Highcroft Way

on your left until you reach Ringlows Lane on

your right. Turn right and immediately sharp left

through the metal gate and onto a path leading

to the Fanny Brook. Continue on this path over a

style and cross the brook via two wooden planks.

Follow this path over several more styles. The

path rises steeply at the end with another style

onto Rydings Lane.

Here you turn left uphill and take a right turn

descending the steps leading down to Rydings

Dam. Take the path on your left and continue

on this path over styles until you reach a metal

bridge. Do not cross the bridge. Take the path to

your left before the bridge which leads up a bank

to another style and into a large field. This stretch

of the path can be difficult to see but continue to

walk up the hill.

At the crest of the hill the route bears right and

walking parallel to the fence continue onwards

until you come to a gate in the corner of the field.

This brings you onto Clough House Lane where

you turn right. Continue along the lane until you

come to the junction with Lower House Lane.

Go through wooden gate ahead. After a few

yards you will see a path on your right. Take this

path which brings you to Higher Slack Brook.

Keep to the path which bends to the left and

cross the wooden bridge over the brook. Turn to

your left and follow the path to its end.

Cross the style. Turn to your right and gradually

climb the bank and onto the lower path around

Watergrove reservoir. Pass through the car park

and go through the gate.

Continue on the Pennine Bridleway until you see

a sign to Shore. Follow the trackway uphill until

you reach the next sign post. Turn right towards

Shore. Take the next turn right through the gate

downhill towards Shore. The track passes Higher

Shore farm on your right and onto Higher Shore

Road which brings you down to the King (Bill)

William.

With your back to the King Bill on your left you

will see a public footpath sign. Go down the steps

and follow the path over Featherstall Brook and

continue on the path passing houses on your left

until the path meets a cross roads.

Go straight across and keep on this path until

you see a wooden gate. Take the public footpath

on your right and then follow the path on your

left. Continue on this path until you see some

steps on your right before a fence. Ascend these

and you will pass a fishing pond. Keeping to the

path continue up the field. Turn to the left along

the path which skirts Birch Hill on the southern

side and follow it as it bears right.

Continue along the path until you reach a flight

of steps. Go down the steps, across the dam wall

and up another flight of steps onto Rydings Lane.

Turn left and walk down the hill for a few yards.

Take the style on your right and follow this path

towards Fanny Brook and retrace the outward

route until you finally emerge on Dewhirst Road

and back to Syke Road and Syke Chapel.

You will cross a stile at Birch Hill Lane. Turn left

and then right onto Birch Road. Take the next

left after Waterhouse Close into a footpath which

brings you onto Elm Grove. Turn left to the end of

cull de sac. Keeping the bungalows on your left

the path leads onto Wardle Road. Turn left and

after a few yards you will see a public footpath

sign on your right. Take this path being careful

were you put your feet here. Follow the path to

the left over the style and across the field with

Rydings Dam to your right.

Syke Walk and Talk Group was

formed almost 15 years ago.

If you feel that you want to get out more for a

walk in the local countryside, then come and

join us outside the Syke Chapel on Friday

mornings at 10am.

in a safe and social group. The walks are

free and friendly and lead by volunteer

walk leaders. Children are welcome if

accompanied by responsible adult. There is

tea, coffee and biscuits available after the

walk at the Syke Chapel for a small donation

to the chapel.
