We are delighted to announce that

for the first time in 3 years, Norden

will be hosting a Christmas light

switch on and Festive Market.

Unlike previous years, this is going to be

held from 5pm on Saturday 3rd December

which means that many more residents

will be able to enjoy this wonderful

community event. As in previous years,

Streetwise is proud to be sponsoring

the mulled wine and mince pie stall and

once again we will both be serving up this

festive tipple, so do come along and say

hello! More information to follow in the

December issue.

The winter season brings new challenges

to our village and the darker evenings

can encourage opportunists. On page

72, local resident Nigel Morrell suggests

ways of preventing crime and potential

break-ins.

We are ever indebted to WI member

Heather Williams who once again has

sent us a fabulous winter warmer to enjoy

as the chilly weather sets in, Minestrone

Soup with a delicious soda bread to

accompany it.

GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE

FOR NOVEMBER

1. Rake dead leaves off lawns as they can harbour fungal diseases and could cause bare

patches if left, because they deprive the lawn of air, light and water.

2. Plant up some new winter hanging baskets or containers using winter pansies, primroses

and trailing ivy.

3. Check that the tree stakes, fences and pergolas are secure and able to withstand

windy weather.

4. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, you can still plant hardy shrubs and roses. A wide range

of slightly cheaper bare root roses are available at this time of the year.

Before planting, earth up the soil around them.

5. Tidy straggly perennials by cutting them back and covering any that are

showing new shoots with a layer of bark chip or a compost mulch to

protect them from frosty weather.

6. Put all those fallen leaves to good use by making leaf mould, a nutritious

soil conditioner. It’s better than binning them or taking them to the tip!

Make you own simple cage with wooden stakes and some chicken wire

or a black bin liner with holes in it will make an easier alternative.

Denehurst Park

Rammy Valley Gundogs Training

Sunday, 25th September, 2022

Once again on a bright Sunday morning,

Denehurst Park echoed to the sounds of dogs

and their owners. This time, the focus was on

the owners and not just the dogs as they both

entered the ring, hoping to acquire skills and

take home more obedient dogs.

Following on from the extremely successful

Denehurst Park Dog Show in August this year,

Tony Bryant from Rammy Valley Gundogs,

who gave demonstrations throughout the

day showing how highly trained his own

dogs were, kindly offered to run three further

sessions with local dog owners teaching them

the rudiments of how to train their pet.

Angela Collinge, of Amber Pets on Cutgate,

advertised the sessions in her store and on the

Denehurst Park Facebook page. The twentyfour

places booked up quickly and owners

paid a £5 fee which was donated to the

Friends of Denehurst Park.

All the dogs were aged from 14 weeks

upwards and the size and level of training

were very varied. Tony introduced himself

individually to each dog owner, asking

questions about their dog and his/her traits,

as well as how the owners behaved towards

them. He then described typical scenarios

such as feeding time, dog walking and general

behaviour in the home. He covered each area

individually by giving a demonstration of the

correct way to proceed in order to have a welltrained

pet. He then encouraged the owners

to repeat what they had just watched.

The mood was light and friendly, everyone

listened intently to Tony’s advice, before trying

it out for themselves. As you can imagine, not

all the dogs were as attentive as their owners

and in these cases, Tony would then chat to

the owner, watching how the dog responded

and, in some cases, showing how to get the

required response from their pet.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the sessions

and both dogs and their owners learned a

great deal. From the number of wagging tails,

it was clear that their dogs were certainly very

happy with the praise they received! We are

hoping that Tony will repeat these sessions

for those who missed out.

The Friends of Denehurst Park would like

for their support in what was a fun day for

all involved.

Smith discussed his specialist collection of

stamps, covers, letters and supporting material

concerning (part 2) of the Indian Mutiny in the

late 1850s.

In 1857 the British recaptured Delhi which

preceded the outbreak from Cawnpore

when treachery resulted in the British being

massacred. Retribution followed when rebel

forces were defeated at Lakhnao. The last

stand was at the battle of Gwalior with final

surrender in April 1859.

Edenfield Road from the Norden Bus Terminus to the Norden

War Memorial will be closed for 1 hour, from 6.15pm till 7.15pm

on Saturday 3rd December 2022.

This is to facilitate the Norden Christmas Light Switch On event. During this

road closure period, all adjoining side streets will also be closed.

Trinity Street and Clapgate Street will be closed for the entire event, from

4.30pm till 7.30pm and Trinity Street is subject to parking restrictions and

the parking bays on Edenfield Road from Wildbloods to the Garden of Eden

will also be subject to no parking restrictions on the day of the event.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause, but due to the

popularity and growth of this event over the years, NEEVA and

Rochdale Borough Council feels safety to our community is paramount.

Minestrone

Soup

INGREDIENTS

75g dried Cannellini beans, soaked overnight

or 1 small tin Cannellini beans

2 tbsps olive oil

4 rashers streaky bacon, diced or pancetta

1 onion finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 stick celery, finely chopped

1 small tin chopped tomatoes

1 litre vegetable stock

150g potato, finely diced

50g small soup pasta

50g frozen peas

75g green beans cut into 4 pieces

100g dark green cabbage

2 tbsps chopped parsley

2 tbsps pesto

Salt and pepper to taste

75g grated parmesan to serve

METHOD

1. Drain the beans and put them in a large pan and

cover with fresh water. Bring them to the boil and

boil rapidly for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat

and, cover and simmer for 1 hour then drain.

2. Heat the oil in a large saucepan, add the bacon,

onions and garlic and fry for 5 - 10 minutes or

golden brown. Add the carrots and celery and cook

for 2 minutes.

3. Stir in the beans, tomatoes, stock, potatoes, and

pasta. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, half

cover and simmer for 1 hour.

4. Add the frozen peas, green beans, cabbage,

parsley, and pesto and simmer for 30 minutes or

until all the vegetables are tender. Serve

immediately with parmesan cheese and pesto

and a good crusty bread.

INGREDIENTS

225g strong plain wholemeal flour

50g strong white plain flour

26g rolled oats

½ level tsp salt

½ level tsp bicarbonate of soda

250mls buttermilk or sour milk

METHOD

1. Mix the flours together with the oats,

salt and bicarbonate of soda

2. Stir in the buttermilk and mix with

a round bladed knife to form a stiff,

slightly sticky dough. Knead the

dough on a lightly floured surface

and shape into a ball.

3. Place on a floured baking tray an

make a cut in the shape of a cross

on top

4. Bake at 220C fan or Gas 8 for 15

minutes then reduce the temperature

tp 200C fan or Gas 6 and bake for a

further 20-25 minutes or until the loaf

sound hollow underneath. Eat whilst

still warm.

5. Dried fruits, chopped onion or cheese

can be added with the flour to give

interest to this bread.

Exhibitions to get artistic makeover

at Rochdale Town Hall

A group of artists and collectives have been selected to

do a number of commissions for Rochdale Town Hall as

part of the building’s ongoing major restoration.

Their work will bring a new perspective to the town hall to help make

it a building for everyone.

Artworks will be created for several rooms throughout the building,

including the new Bright Hall, the Small Exchange and the Mayor’s

Parlour. The works are intended to bring contemporary ideas and tell

the stories that represent people and communities.

The commissions will be co-created with a range of local people from

across the borough. This will include pupils and students at local

schools and colleges and people supported by a number of

community groups.

The workshops started in September with a focus on mediums

including ceramics, print making, stained glass, textiles, drama, film

and costume. Each of those appointed specialise in these different

mediums and the end result will be the creation of unique pieces

of art for the town hall.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equalities, safety and

reform, said: “This is a really exciting announcement for the town hall.

“This group of seven artists and collectives we have put together will

work with the community to deliver inspiring art to be enjoyed by all

visitors to the town hall when it reopens in late summer 2023.

“I am really looking forward to what the co-creations produce and without doubt they will represent

the borough and serve to document the town hall for generations to come.”

The commissions are being funded thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund which has provided

£8.9m to the town hall project.

All the artists who are taking part have a fantastic array of skills and their projects are likely to include

new installations and stained glass, along with audio stories.

The seven artists and groups are:

• Alison Greyer who specialises in textiles, pattern design, printmaking and mosaics

• Beggars Belief who specialise in art, theatre and filmmaking

• Breaking Barriers who will be producing audio, film and photography

• Louise Watson who specialises in glass

• MayWild Studio who will specialise in a mixture of visual and traditional crafts

• Salford Slow Fashion who work with textiles, pigment and print

• Sally Gilford who specialises in print and textiles

Each piece of artwork will be bespoke and play to the strengths the artists have.

As one of the artists said about the work that is under way, creativity helps to strengthen the

relationship with the community and leave a legacy of artworks that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues

A lot has changed in the month since we wrote to you last.

Sadly we lost our longest serving Monarch and we witnessed the Borough pay it's

respects marvellously. September also witnessed a new Prime Minister entering

Downing Street and the change of season from Summer to Autumn; the nights are

certainly drawing in now.

As ever, we continue to work through our casework and have been able to mark a

number of cases as complete recently - always a good feeling.

Our schools have returned and we want to take the opportunity to remind parents of

children who are due to start primary school or secondary in September 2023 that they

can now apply for their child's school place.

Children born between September 1 2018 and August 31 2019 are due to start school

for the first time in September 2023, with children currently in year 6 starting secondary

school at the same time. Secondary applications need to be made before 31 October

2022, and primary applications before 16 January 2023.

In other news we are pleased to report the following street signs have now been

replaced: Arnside Drive, Mayfair Gardens, Kenion Road and Moorgate Avenue

Since our last update we have had an area forum where several issues have been raised

with us including Graffiti along denfield Road, overhanging trees blocking paths on

Claymere and road signage on oodhouse ane, along with issues with parking

enforcement along orsyth Street. e are pleased to report that all of these concerns

have now been addressed by Cllr. inkler

At the forum Cllr. Gartside reported back on the work that we have been doing at the

orden ar Memorial. ith an update on progress for the renovation work which will

enhance the readability of the names on the stonework. e are working hard to get this

done before our Remembrance service and hope that many of you will oin us for this again

this year on Sunday 13th ovember.

e attended a very moving local service by St. Pauls Church to mark the passing of

ueen liabeth ll, along with the Kings proclamation at umber One Riverside.

Cllrs inkler and Gartside met with residents in Red umb to discuss the condition of the

road surface and are working with local people to see if there are any improvements that

can be made.

e have also had a meeting of our ward fund group and have put forward several

proposals for investments and improvements in the village. hese include, news and

replacement bins, additional dropped kerbs to help disabled and pushchair access in the

village and funding towards our village Christmas tree. If you would like to enuire about

funding for a proect or group you are a member of please contact any one of us for a chat.

ith the dark nights upon us we want to pass on a message from our community policing

team about general vigilance, locking doors and windows, keeping valuables and car keys

out of sight and the use of light timers which can all help to prevent crime.

Changing

Seasons

and New

Challenges

October marks the start of challenging

Autumn and Winter Seasons for Villagers

and the police alike. We all have a part to

play in reducing crime throughout our Ward,

whilst at the same time supporting

PC McCluskey and his Team and their efforts.

Not all crime is avoidable, but we can make

it more difficut for oortunists to rofit

when we forget sime recautions:

• If you are leaving your house unattended,

even for a few days, cancel milk papers

and other regular deliveries.

• It is helpful to put lights on timers and

consider leaving a radio or television on if

your house is empty, particularly at night.

• Secure the perimeter of your dwelling,

including sheds and other outbuildings.

• Make sure that vehicles are securely

locked at all times and that valuable items

are removed or hidden from view.

• Ensure that windows and doors are

secured before leaving your home

unattended, even for short periods.

• If your vehicle is keyless, consider putting

the proximity device in a tin overnight to

thwart scanning by criminals.

• Consider investing in CCTV to protect your

property.

• If you live in rural parts of our Ward, think

carefully about how to protect plant and

machinery. Consider whether you can

make it immobile, when not in use. Does

your machinery have tracking devices

fitted?

Should you come across crime or suspicious

activity report it to the Police. Greater

Manchester Police have made reporting

quicker and easier, by introducing a

Livechat facility. This is accessible by going

to the GMP Homepage and, in the bottom

righthand corner of the screen, you will

see a blue Live chat icon; clicking on that

icon puts you in direct contact with the

GMP Team who can formally record you

concerns. The information generated in this

way is extremely helpful to our Officers. The

recorded information cascades down to

our local Police Team and assists them in

prioritising and directing resources. Please

use this facility.

Following this advice may help make the

coming months quieter for residents and

our GMP Team alike.

On a separate matter, there is serious

concern about the way matters are discussed

and debated on social media, within our

community. During the last few months, a

number of social media participants have

resorted to inappropriate, and in some cases,

foul language when responding to postings

on various outlets. This is unnecessary and

it needs to stop. It is important in a small

community to have healthy and respectful

debates about matters of concern; however

this needs to be done in a civilised fashion,

which allows solutions to be reached, without

fermenting division.

There is a simple test as to whether your

posting is constructive, ask yourself “if the

intended recipient of your posting was

standing next to you, would you use that

tone or language to express your views?“ If

this question is answered in the negative,

then rethink your posting. The challenges

we face in coming months are so large and

diverse, that we need to work together, in

a positive, constructive fashion, to address

them and our dialogue needs to reflect this.

If just some of the precautions suggested

above can be adopted, then the next few

months will be more harmonious than in

previous years.
