Welcome to our
November issue
In this issue we have an update on the restoration
work at Rochdale Town Hall. As part of this, a
group of artists and collectives have been chosen
to do a number of commissions which you can
read about on page 41.
The winter season brings new challenges to our
villages and the darker evenings can encourage
opportunists. On page 46, local resident Nigel
Morrell suggests ways of preventing crime and
potential break-ins.
We are always grateful to WI member Rachel
Jones who as Bonfire Night approaches, has
once again has sent us a delicious Parkin recipe.
To accompany this is an article by Gary Heywood-
Everett who writes about how, before the
organised bonfire and firework displays which we
are familiar with, bonfires across the town were
opportunities for communities to come together.
If you have anything that you feel could be included
in the community pages, please do get in touch.
One more issue to go before Christmas so look
out for it dropping through your letterbox from
30th November.
Until next month…

Exhibitions to get artistic makeover
at Rochdale Town Hall
A group of artists and collectives have been selected to
do a number of commissions for Rochdale Town Hall as
part of the building’s ongoing major restoration.
Their work will bring a new perspective to the town hall to help make
it a building for everyone.
Artworks will be created for several rooms throughout the building,
including the new Bright Hall, the Small Exchange and the Mayor’s
Parlour. The works are intended to bring contemporary ideas and tell
the stories that represent people and communities.
The commissions will be co-created with a range of local people from
across the borough. This will include pupils and students at local
schools and colleges and people supported by a number of
community groups.
The workshops started in September with a focus on mediums
including ceramics, print making, stained glass, textiles, drama, film
and costume. Each of those appointed specialise in these different
mediums and the end result will be the creation of unique pieces
of art for the town hall.
Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equalities, safety and
reform, said: “This is a really exciting announcement for the town hall.
“This group of seven artists and collectives we have put together will
work with the community to deliver inspiring art to be enjoyed by all
visitors to the town hall when it reopens in late summer 2023.
“I am really looking forward to what the co-creations produce and without doubt they will represent
the borough and serve to document the town hall for generations to come.”
The commissions are being funded thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund which has provided
£8.9m to the town hall project.
All the artists who are taking part have a fantastic array of skills and their projects are likely to include
new installations and stained glass, along with audio stories.
The seven artists and groups are:
• Alison Greyer who specialises in textiles, pattern design, printmaking and mosaics
• Beggars Belief who specialise in art, theatre and filmmaking
• Breaking Barriers who will be producing audio, film and photography
• Louise Watson who specialises in glass
• MayWild Studio who will specialise in a mixture of visual and traditional crafts
• Salford Slow Fashion who work with textiles, pigment and print
• Sally Gilford who specialises in print and textiles
Each piece of artwork will be bespoke and play to the strengths the artists have.
As one of the artists said about the work that is under way, creativity helps to strengthen the
relationship with the community and leave a legacy of artworks that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Update from St Thomas’, Newhey
and St James’, Milnrow
Whatever happened to November?
I’m sure it used to have its own character but now November is
the gap between Halloween and Christmas. In the church it is
the season of Remembrance, beginning with All Saints (when
we remember famous saints) followed by All Souls (when we
commemorate the saints who weren’t famous, but the people who
inspired us and those we love) and then Remembrance Sunday
(when we remember those who have died or been permanently
affected by war). Apart from this, November doesn’t seem to
have anything much going for it – unless you count my birthday
(which is hardly a widespread cause for celebration!). Oh, and
moustaches!
Perhaps we need to reclaim November from the ‘festive’ season.
We need to gather our strength for the winter and make space
for this unique month. Its true that the weather is often cold
and wet, and it is now that we start to really notice the darkness
encroaching on our evenings but there is nothing like a good walk
with friends on a crisp November day followed by a hot drink or
soup. I’m sure the Milnrow library walking group can offer some
ideas if that’s your thing, take a look back on all the great walks in
past issues of Streetwise!
Or maybe you could try a new craft – there’s always something
going on at the Albert Mill and it is a great way to make new
friends or have fun with the ones you already have. Take up
knitting or crochet and you could make some warm socks or
blankets to keep chills at bay now that we’ve all turned our
heating down! Doing something practical like this is good for your
health and doesn’t need to cost a lot of money. It can also have the
added advantage of being sociable, which means we can support
each other when life feels difficult.
Jesus spent a lot of his time healing people, often people for whom
illness meant isolation or rejection by society. God did not intend
for humans to live completely separate from one another, although
I know there is such a thing as too much company and we all have
our own different comfort zones on that one. In a world where we are all ‘doing our own thing’ I think
it is important, and Christ-like, to do some things together, to share with others and to laugh and cry
together sometimes. Most of all, it is important that nobody gets left out or forgotten.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope you find some fun this November and let’s keep looking out for
those who are less able to get out and about as winter approaches.
Revd Janet Pitman

A TRIP TO HARROGATE
On Thursday the 15th of September, members
of the Milnrow Walking Group along with
friends and walkers from the Syke and Cutgate
walking groups set off by coach for Harrogate.
This time there wasn’t a planned walk, but we had
all been given plenty of information on places to
see and things to do. The coach picked up some
passengers in Rochdale before collecting the rest
of the passengers in Milnrow.
On arrival in Harrogate, we split into small groups
with some staying in Harrogate and some catching
a bus out to Knaresborough. One or two also
managed to find time to see something of both
places.
Those staying in Harrogate visited various parts of
the town including Harlow Carr RHS Gardens, the
infamous Betty’s Tearooms and some also joined a
guided tour of Harrogate.
Meanwhile the people visiting Knaresborough were
able spend time looking round the town, walking by
the river and visiting Mother Shipton’s Cave, where
petrified items can be seen hanging under the
waterfall, before heading back to Harrogate with
time to spare for a well-earned cup of tea and slice
of cake in one of the many tearooms.
We all met up again and boarded the coach for our
return journey which was full of chatter of tales of
our day’s activities with our friends. Passengers
were dropped off in Milnrow and Rochdale on our
return.
Our grateful thanks go to Barry and Carol King for
their efforts in planning and organizing the trip and
to our driver Rob of Robert’s Travel who drove us
there and back safely in his lovely coach.

BONFIRE AND GUY FAWKES NIGHT
Before the control of the ‘organised’
bonfire and firework displays with
which we are so familiar, many
bonfires across the town were
opportunities for communities –
streets, families, neighbourhoods
– to come together and find
entertainment and good company
through food, the excitement of a fire
and fireworks. It was also a chance
for children to make a little money
on the streets.
As suggested earlier, until recently
bonfires after the second world war have
been local community events. They were
also a chance to make a ‘Guy,’ sit him
out on the street and ask passers-by for
money. There had been a tradition of
children doing this from the 18th century,
asking for a ‘penny for the Guy.’ The
quality of the Guy didn’t matter as it was
normally burnt on the bonfire anyway
but it was sometimes no more than a
brush steel with a jacket tied around it on
top of which was a balloon or cardboard
head with the familiar beard drawn on it.
Children would sometimes go door-to-door
asking for money after singing songs like
‘Guy Fawkes Guy’ or ‘Cob Coalin’:
The word bonfire comes from a Middle
English word ‘banefire’, which means a
fire for burning bones as ‘bane’ was an old
word for ‘bone’. Gruesomely, it was often
an occasion when the bones (and bodies)
of religious heretics would be burned. Until
recently, modern day bonfires, however,
were associated with Guy Fawkes Night
and the religious and political plot led
by the Catholic Robert Catesby to blow
up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.
Interestingly, there is an alleged local
connection to this plot in that Peter
Heywood (no relation!) who lived at
Heywood Hall was supposedly responsible
for the capture of Guy Fawkes when he
saw Fawkes about to commit the deed
and snatched the torch from him, thus
preventing the destruction of Parliament.
Whether that is true or not is disputable as
Heywood was in fact a magistrate working
in Westminster but was known for his
legal persecution of Catholics so would
have been sympathetic to the capture of
the gunpowder plotters.

“We come a Cob-coalin, cob coalin, cob
coalin
We come a Cob-coalin for Bonfire day,
Fal-a-day, fal-a-day, fal-a-diddly-i-dum-day.
For down in yon’ cellar there’s plenty of
bugs
They’ve eaten our stockings and part of
our clogs
We’ll get a big axe and we’ll chop their
heads off
And we’ll have a good supper of bugs
heads and broth.’
Preparation for the bonfire itself would
go on for weeks with wood collecting
(which we called ‘bommy wood’) and then
setting guards to defend the wood from
other marauding children from nearby
neighbourhoods who were out to steal
Being brought up on Milnrow Road we
were conscious of boys coming from Tin
Town (near Hornets ground) who thought
nothing of fighting you for your wood.
Before the fire, if your family had the
money, you would go to a shop and buy
fireworks. The fantastic colours of the
fountains and the roman candles, the
pinwheels, the jumping jacks, the rockets
and the bangers would be laid out for sale
on the counter and you would pick the
ones you wanted and bring them home,
ready to ‘light the blue touch paper and
retire immediately’ for safety, not that there
was too much concern for it. Sparklers
would be waved about in the dark, rockets
would be set off from milk bottles and
either soar into the sky or hit nearby
houses and fall fizzing to the ground.
The evening of the bonfire itself usually
started after tea – about seven o’clock -
and people from the houses would gather
round and the fire lit. Soon there would be
a blaze and faces would be glowing in the
heat of the fire. People would set off their
family fireworks which would be watched
by everyone.
There was some sympathy for dogs and
cats on a night when booms and bangs
were frequent, animals often traumatised
indoors with the sounds. Communities
would come together for the food too.
Depending on what various kitchens
could prepare, this would consist of parkin
and treacle toffee, sometimes black peas
and – for those willing to get a hot face –
potatoes roasted whole at the edges of
the fire.
Always a busy night for the fire brigade,
bonfire night used to be a risky, sometimes
dangerous but colourful date on the
calendar, one which brought neighbours
together. Of late, the health and safety
regulations around fires and fireworks has
changed all of that and replaced it with a
safer, organised experience with people
at a safe distance from the action. As a
result of these changes and this ‘progress’
however, the history of the event is being
forgotten as is the loss of bonfire night’s
unifying of households in community.
If you have any comments about bonfire night, I’d be delighted to hear from you
and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject.
Please contact Gary Heywood-Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or
leave your comments by text or by recorded message at 07562752774.

advice can make all the difference
Our lives are busy and complicated. Families today

In so many areas, we rely on experts to point us
in the right direction. If your car breaks down, you
see a mechanic. If a tooth aches, you go to the
dentist. The same should be true of our finances.
Why wouldn’t we ask the experts and make sure
they’re being managed effectively?
