With three issues to go before the

Christmas break, we are looking forward

to bringing you the usual selection of local

This month is no exception, and the

community pages are brimming with

so many interesting articles about

what’s been going on over the Summer

including the Rochdale and Norden in

Bloom which are both going for Gold this

year, Denehurst Dog Show which has

some wonderful photos taken by local

photographer Richard Smith and Henry’s

Charity Bike Ride which we featured in the

June issue. Henry is a truly inspirational

individual who turned his personal loss

and tragedy into something wonderful,

raising a huge amount of money for two

charities who both supported him during

the challenging times in his life.

On page 73 you can read all about the

renovation work which is taking place

to Rochdale Town Hall and how the

restoration of this iconic building will

eventually return it to the splendour of

when it first opened in 1871.

Save Bamford Greenbelt

The plan to build 450 houses on Bamford Green Belt has not gone away,

it’s still very much ongoing, and in fact, may have just got a whole lot worse.

The closing date for objections has long since passed, and all our objections are now with the

Independent Planning Inspectors for scrutiny.

However, we’ve recently learned that there have been meetings between Peel Holdings, Bridge

Football Club, and RMBC leaders discussing the possibility of a land swap , which would see

some of the current football fields, notably the large one behind Norford Way, built on. New football

pitches ,and a new football pavilion, would be created further back, allegedly, somewhere behind

the Cricket Club. This is NOT the plan that was put forward in the Places for Everyone Public

Consultation.

The access road for these houses would go right across the middle of Bamford Green, coming out

somewhere opposite Belgium Sreet, and would effectively destroy Bamford Green, reducing it to

2 wide grass verges on either side of a road. The plan also includes a second road to come out at

the top of the site on Furbarn Road somewhere, also not mentioned in the original plan.

The map shown here shows how it might look.

Remember this is just an approximation, and

doesn’t include any roads.

RMBC have declined to comment, as have Bridge

FC, while Peel replied with the standard answer

about being committed to providing the best

possible outcome for Bamford and Norden.

There is a hearing scheduled with the Planning

Inspectors in Manchester on 8th February 2023 for

the Bamford/Norden allocation.Several members

of Bamford Green Belt Action Group and Save

Gt Manchester GB have been invited to attend,

along with the best legal representation we can afford, which, despite your previous generosity in

donating to the Just Giving page, is still unlikely to be in the same league as that provided by Peel

and GMCA, who have both employed top barristers.

No further details available at the moment, but we will keep you posted.

So, for now, the only thing you can all do, (unless you’re a barrister willing to help us pro-bono,) is

continue to donate whatever you can afford towards our legal costs, through the Just Giving page,

(see below) and hope that common sense on the part of the Inspectors prevails over corporate

and council shenanigans, and that the area remains in the Green Belt.

ever made. It uses shortcrust pastry that

can be either homemade or bought and

any fruit you may have at any time of year.

It is best served straight from the oven

with cream, crème fraiche, ice cream

or custard. I will be using Apples and

Blackberries- both in abundance at this

time of year.

INGREDIENTS

PASTRY

225g plain flour

50g butter

50g white fat- lard, Trex or

white Flora

2 teaspoons caster sugar

Cold water – 1 teaspoon per

25g flour at least

FILLING

450g cooking apples- peeled,

cored and sliced

225g Blackberries, washed

and dehulled and dried on

kitchen paper

1 tablespoon of semolina

50g soft brown sugar

(ground spices can also be

added depending on the

fruits used, eg cinnamon,

nutmeg, allspice, ginger)

1 egg white

METHOD

1. Make the pastry by rubbing the fats into the flour until it resembles

fine breadcrumbs.

2. Using a round bladed knife, mix together with cold water to make a

smooth dough that is not sticky.

3. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead very gently, place in a

covered bowl in the fridge whilst you prepare the fruits.

4. Prepare the apples and place in a bowl with the blackberries, stir in

the sugar.

5. Place the pastry on the middle of a flat baking sheet and roll into a

circle, turning tray as you roll. Sprinkle a 25.5cm circle in the centre

of the pastry with the semolina.

6. Pile the fruit into the centre and turn the edges of the pastry on top

to partially enclose the fruit, don’t worry if the pastry breaks just

patch it up , it is meant to look ragged and interesting.

7. Brush with beaten egg white and sprinkle the sugar over the top.

8. Bake at Gas 6, 200C or 180C fan oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until

the pastry has browned and the fruit is cooked.

9. Serve straight from the oven.

Other fruits to use: Apple and raspberry, Apple and

strawberry, Apricots, Plums, Greengages, Cherries,

Pears, Cranberry apple and orange or what ever combination

you have or like

Remember this?

Ok, we know it’s only September, but Christmas

will be upon us before we know it, and big events

like the Carol Singing round the Christmas tree on

Bamford Green in December take a lot of organising

and don’t just happen spontaneously.

So we’ve made a start, and here’s a date for your

diaries. This year’s event will take place on Sunday,

11th December, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, and Santa

has confirmed that he will be putting in an appearance,

as he did at last year’s very popular event.

And for now, that’s as far as we’ve got! More details to follow in the next issue of

HENRY’S CHARITY BIKE RIDE

Your may remember that we covered the story of

Henry Krasowski’s charity bike ride in the July issue.

Having suffered many personal losses in his life as well as

having suffered himself from bowel cancer last year, he made

the decision to embark on a mammoth charity bike ride in

order to raise funds towards The Christie who

treated him last year as well as Springhill Hospice who cared

for his daughter Emma who sadly passed away

from Cancer a few years ago.

We are very pleased to announce that Henry successfully

completed the challenge, he covered 1860 miles in total and

this took him 11 days and 10 hours. He would like to thank

everyone for supporting him including the two drivers who

helped him along the way as well as all those who donated.

In total he raised a whopping £6450 which will be split between

The Christie and Springhill Hospice.

Denehurst Park Dog Show!

Once again, the sun shone for the

second annual Denehurst Park Dog

Show, held on Sunday 21st August.

Angela Collinge, owner of Amber Pets

and Lois Barton from The Friends of

Denehurst Park organised the new

schedule for this year’s show.

Together, they contacted local businesses

to sponsor the classes who also donated

prizes to the first placed winners in each

class. In return for their sponsorship, the

sponsors had their business name printed

on the rosette tails for their Class.

The show was staffed by the Friends of

Denehurst Park committee members and

local volunteers. Richard Smith, a wellknown

local photographer, agreed to come

along and photograph entrants and their

pets, these mementoes proved extremely

popular with last year’s entrants.

It was an early start for the valiant band of

volunteers who prepared the show ground

and built the gazebos in readiness for the

visitors and their pets to arrive. A new and

eagerly anticipated attraction this year, was

the Rammy Valley Gun Dog displays. Tony

Bryant gave demonstrations throughout

the day showing just how highly trained

his dogs are and offering help and advice

on how to transfer skills from the gundog

world into useful skills for pet owners.

In fact, many visitors were so impressed

by the displays that they have said they

intend to contact Tony in the near future to

organise training sessions with him.

The main ring was busy all day with

entrants hoping to be awarded one of the

wonderful prizes that had been donated by

local businesses.

The various Classes entertained the visitors

with a constant stream of dogs of all breeds

and sizes, some more willing than others to

participate.

As well as the competition in the main

ring, a Bale Scurry had been set up where

owners had to encourage their pets to run

to the other end of the course, collect a toy

and return it to their owner, and all against

the clock. Peals of laughter could be heard

across the park as owners called, shouted,

and cajoled their pets to little avail in some

cases. The three fastest dogs of the day

won prizes and we’re definitely planning to

run this activity again next year.

Once again, our volunteers were out in force

and did a splendid job, turning their hands

to anything from announcing Classes and

Stewarding, to keeping the canine water

bowls brimming with fresh, cold water.

Many thanks to all of them, we couldn’t have

delivered the day without you.

The consensus of opinion from all who

attended is that the day was a resounding

success, the atmosphere was so friendly

and happy as families sat on the grass

around the display rings eating picnics and

pizzas, provided by Benjamin’s Italian as

they chatted and watched the shows.

Thank you to all who took part,

whether as a volunteer, a sponsor,

by donating prizes or as a visitor, but

especially to our four-legged friends

who really made the day.

We hope to see you all again at

the next Denehurst Park Dog Show

which will be held on Sunday,

20th August 2023.

Rochdale in Bloom group welcomes

Judges to town

Rochdale in Bloom is officially going for Gold once more as the community

group welcomed the RHS judges to town for the annual Northwest and National

in Bloom Competitions.

For the first time in the event’s history, the judges spent a full seven days in Rochdale for the judging.

The route saw judges visit Norden Jubilee Park, Caldershaw Green, the Edenfield Road Alley Gate

Scheme, the RAFC Wonderwall, Castleton Railway Station, Castleton War Memorial, Springhill Hospice,

Bilal Mosque, the Growth Project, Rochdale town centre and the World War One memorial garden.

For 2022, Rochdale in Bloom has once again partnered with Rochdale Borough Council Environmental

management and local businesses including H Bell & Sons, as well as Richard Hagan, of Crystal Doors,

and Angela Collinge, who runs Amber Pets in Cutgate precinct.

Over 60 entries across the categories this year include the first ‘Churches in Bloom’, Norden village with

a chance to win its own Gold again in the village category, plus the return of ‘Mosques in Bloom’ as

part of the It’s Your Neighbourhood contest, Denehurst Park, Norden in Bloom, Lock 50 Canal and RT,

Balderstone Park as well as Healey Dell tea rooms.

This year’s theme was ‘community’, a nod to its roots as is a volunteer-led organisation consisting of

various parties including Friends of groups, local businesses, local residents and volunteers.

Northwest in Bloom, run by the Royal Horticultural Society, promotes imaginative planting schemes,

landscaping, conservation and recycling projects, and clean-up projects for

litter and graffiti.

Judges award points based on three main criteria: horticultural

achievement, environmental responsibility, and community

participation.

Finalists from the Northwest in Bloom

competition are entered into the RHS’ Britain

in Bloom, which is the UK’s longest running

gardening competition.

Rochdale was entered into the national

Britain in Bloom for the first time in 2018 and

won a Gold medal.

The town has once again been put forward to

represent the Northwest nationally, after it won

Gold in the ‘small city’ category in 2021, its fifth

consecutive Gold in the category.

Northwest In Bloom judges were

welcomed to Norden village on

Wednesday 27th July for its second

year of the Royal Horticultural Society’s

competition.

The village was first entered into the contest

as a standalone entry last year, where it won

both ‘best newcomer’ and gold in the large

village category.

Judges were taken on a colourful route

around Ashworth Valley, St James’ Chapel,

Taylor Park, Norden Rockery, the Norden War

Memorial, Norden Village, Norden Bowling

Club, Moss Row Community Allotments, Moss

Row Woodland, the award-winning Norden

Jubilee Park, Birtle Brook Garden Village, and

the Pavilion restaurant.

Each site had either been improved or had

a new addition in anticipation of the big day,

including new saddle planters on School

Lane, plus two new additions to round off

the judging.

Paul Ellison, of Team Norden, the group

behind Norden in Bloom, said: “We’re hoping

to retain Gold this year; after winning ‘best

newcomer’ and a Gold last year, we want to

keep our standards high.

Taylor Park has undergone immense

improvements for 2022, and we welcomed

two new stops to the team which are a great

asset to the village.

We’ve worked hard all year round and had

plenty of new volunteers join us in this

huge community effort. Thank you to all our

volunteers, sponsors and partners who have

made this possible; a special thanks goes

to H Bell and Sons and Rochdale Borough

Council.”

Norden WI Update

Our group has had a very busy Summer with a

variety of events and outings.

We celebrated The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

with a “HAT” themed evening which involved

designing and wearing hats plus a ‘Name the

Corgi’ fundraiser and all finished off with a

buffet supper and a glass of fizz to toast the

Queen, our WI patron.

Our Walking Group has enjoyed walks around

Ashworth and the Lunch Group have sampled

a variety of local hostelries!

As the evenings are drawing in, our Craft

Group members are busy knitting poppies for

the Memorial Gardens and making Christmas

decorations for a ‘Table To Sale’ fundraiser.

As part of The National Big Green Week in

September/October,,we will be “Planting a

Tree for the Jubilee” on 27th September in the

Jubilee Gardens with the support of Norden

in Bloom.

Our next meeting on 6th October and will

be a talk about “Lancashire Witches” at St.

Paul’s Church Hall, Blackpits Road Norden.

Our August meeting took us out to visit ’The

Fireground’ which is the Greater Manchester

Fire Service Museum in Rochdale. We had an

interesting and enlightening guided tour of this

1930’s authentic fire station.

The September meeting was a talk by Andrew

who is a volunteer motor bike rider for The

Blood bikes. He explained how this voluntary

organisation supports the NHS and how

they transport blood and babies breast milk

to hospitals in an emergency. We were able

to donate £100 to this fantastic voluntary

organisation, which relies solely on donations.

MOSs ROW ALlOTMENTS

Summer on Moss Row Allotments

In July we were looking forward to welcoming our first school

visit since 2019 when Year 5 children from Whittaker Moss

School were due to arrive to complete a questionnaire about

the Allotments. Everything was prepared and we were eagerly

looking forward to the result of the completed questionnaires

when Covid struck, and we had to cancel the visit. That is the

second year that we have had to cancel so fingers crossed next

year we will be able to go ahead!

In early August, the Allotments were judged as part of Norden in

Bloom. They are not looking their best this year because of the

structural improvements that we have concentrated on which

includes our new toilet facilities, the repaired path, the Moss

Row entrance hard standing and our new sign at the Shepherd

Street end. This was designed and painted by one of our

talented plot holders, Suzie Grimes, who also painted the sign

at the Moss Row end. We are hoping and keeping everything

crossed that these improvements would suffice in maintaining

our Level 5. We will learn the result in mid-October.

On Bank Holiday Sunday passers-by may have heard music

and a great deal of merriment on Moss Row. The Allotments

held their annual barbecue for the first time since 2019 and it

was an enormous success with family and friends invited. Many

of the new plot holders attended and this gave them the chance

to meet other tenants and form new friendships which they

may not always have the opportunity to do due to the fact that

tenants arrive at various times.

Going into Autumn there are many jobs which need to be

completed. We are hoping to obtain more funding so that the

donated flags can be brought into use in the Community area.

A vacant plot needs clearing after being used as a work area

whilst the path was re-flagged. The area at Shepherd Street

car park needs clearing and re-planting as it has become

overgrown. This is due to the bushes being cut back to improve

visibility on the site following the intruders accessing the site

in Spring. Hazel trees in the wildlife area need coppicing and a

rogue tree needs removing. The working parties are going to be

busy over the next few months!

Rochdale Town Hall, a masterpiece

deserving of celebration

Rochdale Town Hall, widely regarded as one of the finest in

the country, is currently undergoing a multi-million pound

restoration which includes £8.9m from the lottery fund.

Phase two of the project is under way with the town hall due to reopen

next year in late summer 2023.

The aim is to return it to the original splendour of when it first opened

in 1871 and for it to be a building for the enjoyment of everyone.

Rooms are being developed into exhibition spaces to tell Rochdale’s

story alongside a new Bright Hall for events.

The Bright Hall is named after Rochdalian John Bright, a politician

and mill owner from the 1800s. He famously led the repeal of the Corn

Laws which placed tariffs on food imports making it too expensive to

bring in cereals from abroad, creating food shortages.

As you can imagine, the work taking place is comprehensive.

Renovations are taking place from the ground up to the installation

of a new roof. Hidden improvements include developing a more

environmentally friendly building including installing new insulation.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equalities, safety and

reform at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The restoration and

the way the town hall will subsequently be used for all residents is

fantastic news for the borough.

“The building is a beacon for the whole region, it displays magnificent

gothic architecture and once complete will continue to shine for

generations to come.”

Much of the cleaning and repair is being carried out on site, especially

to the stained glass that adorns the building throughout. Some of that

has been transported to York for key preservation.

Most significantly the town hall is being made accessible. There will

be new ramps to make getting into the building easier and a new lift is

being installed.

Outside, the area is being completely landscaped with some new

grassed areas to complement new paving in a new Town Hall Square

that will be used for events.

Integral to the project are the large number of local residents who

have volunteered to give their time in assisting with the restoration

work. Their efforts have been key to driving the project forward and in

keeping it running to schedule.

One thing the town hall team are proud to be delivering upon opening is a new Welcome Gallery.

This will feature items and photographs that portray memories associated with the town hall.

Donations or long-term loans are still welcome, plus stories you may have that will remind visitors

of times past from events like festivals to other public gatherings.

NORDEN COUNCILLOR callS

for CABINET cabinet u-turn

on

SchOOL School Crossing cuts

Norden Councillor and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group for Rochdale, Cllr.

Peter Winkler is calling for the immediate reinstatement of 31 school crossing patrols

that were axed by Labour’s Rochdale Council Cabinet in 2019.

In March 2019 the Cabinet voted to defund 31 crossing patrols across the borough.

Their decision made 31 front-line staff redundant and left 40 primary and secondary

schools without a patrol unless they stumped up the £4,000 cost from their education

budget. The reason given for this cut was that following an assessment of all schools in

the borough, those listed didn’t need a crossing patrol as there was a ‘low risk’ to

children – Parents and teachers disagreed.

Speaking at the most recent meeting of the full council, Councillor Winker told the

Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Cllr. Rachel Massey, that he was calling for the

reinstatement of all the services which were axed under her predecessor Cllr. Heakin.

Cllr. Winkler pointed out that following his campaign to have services reinstated, which

included a petition with hundreds of signatures, he had previously been told that it could

not possibly be done, there was no need for services at these schools and that the risk

to children’s safety was ‘low’.

“Since the appointment of the new Cabinet Member there has been a suggestion that

the cut was going to be reversed for just one school (though it hasn’t happened). There

have been no circumstantial changes at the school so was this just electioneering? I

certainly hope it is not because Cllr. Massey is a parent at this school.”

Calls were made earlier this month for a crossing point close to a school in Castleton

following a series of accidents.

“Whatever the reason I think this just shows that the decision to cut these crossing

patrols was wrong and needs reversing. I now want to see funding for this and all the

other patrols reinstated as a matter of urgency. This would mean children and adults

have patrols in place to help them cross dangerous roads safely.”

“As a council, we need to ensure that children are safe on their way to and from school,

it’s a basic duty of care. We are all aware of how dangerous and busy the roads are,

especially around schools at the start and end of the school day. I have never

understood why these services had to be cut as the council had a balanced budget

before removing them. It’s time to bring them back.”

Its been a busy time since we last had the opportunity to write to you all and

we continue to progress a range of different and sometimes complex casework

enuiries.

Were pleased to see the ward receiving a share of the recent Township

funding awards, with a number of different schemes accessing the funds

available including further Mere works are Springfield Park. We are always on

the lookout for constituted community groups who may benefit from access to

this funding and over the years we have supported many local groups. Please

do get in touch with us if you feel we can help.

In other news, we have recently completed a number of speed watch

operations in conjunction with GMP and are also working on a plan to continue

tackling Anti-Social ehaviour at hotspots throughout the ward.

We have long maintained that keeping the ward clean and tidy is a priority for

us, and regularly attend the riends of amford community mornings on the

first Sunday of each month. We are pleased that we are now supporting more

residents to set up new litter picking groups and have arranged for the loan of

litter picking euipment to ensure they get off to a fantastic start. f course we

will also be on hand to get our hands dirty, excuse the pun

Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues

There has been a lot going on sine the last update and it has been great to see many

residents over the summer. Whether that was at one of our surgeries, in the cricket club

at the recently sponsored match, at the Moss Row Allotments , the opening of the

new Cap and Whippet or just out in the village, it’s always good to stop and chat and get

your feedback.

Many of our residents will have already noticed the massive upgrade and improvements

made to the lower section of urbarn Lane over the summer holidays. This has been a

lengthy piece of work between we Councillors and our Rights of Way fficer. The

surface has been completely upgraded and many residents are already telling us what a

huge improvement it is. This was one of our recent election promises so we are

pleased that we have delivered on this in time for the new school term.

We have conducted speed operations (at night) with our local policing team over the

summer in both Norden and amford. Several drivers were stopped and we have a firm

commitment to more of the same in the coming months.

Graffiti has been a bit of a problem over the summer and as the council do not prioritise

the removal of ‘non-offensive’ graffiti we have rolled up our sleeves to ensure that this is

removed and does not become acceptable in the village.

Councillor Winkler has re-ignighted his campaign to restore crossing patrols to our

schools. This is not just in Norden but right across the borough following Rochdale

Council service reductions back in 2019, which left 40 schools with unmanned

crossings. He took the opportunity to raise this point in full council and will be continuing

to add pressure to see these services restored for the safety of children and adults alike.

GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE

FOR OCTOBER

1. Early Autumn is the perfect time to move trees and shrubs whilst they approach dormancy

and the soil is still warm.

2. Lift and divide clumps of crowded herbaceous perennials. This helps to rejuvenate the plant,

providing more flowers and a better shape for next year.

3. Plant Spring bulbs either in the border as a space filler (Allium’s & Daffodils), in the lawn for

a splash of colour (Snakes Head Fritilleries, Crocus’s or Dwarf Daffodils) or in containers for

a beautiful patio display (Tulip’s).

4. Sow hardy annual seeds in the ground where they are to grow for an earlier

display next Summer. Try Nigella Damascena (Love-in-a-mist) or

Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower).

5. It’s not too late to have a go at growing some vegetables. Garlic cloves

can planted now as can broad beans in the soil where they are to grow.

These will be ready to harvest from as early as May next year.

6. October is still a good month to lay turf onto prepared, raked ground. Or

to improve your existing lawn, rake up any moss and thatch build up and

improve lawn drainage with a hollow tined aerator.
