Second national win for Rochdale

with prestigious Britain in Bloom title

Rochdale in Bloom scooped gold in the finals of

the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom

competition, hosted in London.

Following a two-year hiatus, the Britain in Bloom Finals

returned for 2022 with 46 community gardening groups

looking to wow judges this summer.

Finalists were judged according to strengthened

environmental criteria that encourages groups to consider

sustainability issues and implement planet-friendly

gardening techniques within their community projects.

Nominated for the Small City category, and up against

titans Bath, Canterbury and Burton, Rochdale in Bloom

represented the North West nationally, after winning its

fifth consecutive gold in the 2021 regional competition.

It’s the second time Rochdale has represented the region

at the nationals, taking home yet another gold in 2018.

The Rochdale team steamed ahead to take the gold and

also best in category in this year’s competition with the

three other competitors in the category taking home silver

gilts, the next best on the score chart.

Like many of this year’s finalists, the volunteers have

worked hard to dust off the tools after the pandemic to

get displays ship shape in time for judging. This year’s

floral designs across the town were influenced by the war

in Ukraine, planting sunflowers along the route, and the

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

For both regional and national comps, the team choose a

selection of sites for the judges to visit that showcase the

best of Rochdale, but at the same time meet all aspects

of the judging criteria. However, the National competition

is widely acknowledged as being much stricter and

expectations and standards are much higher.

The judges were treated to spectacular floral displays at

Norden Jubilee Park, Cutgate alleygate, Denehurst Park,

Rochdale AFC’s Wonderwall, Castleton Railway Station,

Castleton War Memorial, Bilal Mosque, and the World

War One pop-up garden in Rochdale Memorial Gardens.

Whereas at Caldershaw Green they witnessed the huge

biodiversity steps being taken to rejuvenate the area. At

the Growth Project and Springhill Hospice judges also

saw how Rochdale is tackling food sustainability and

supporting health through gardening.

Chairman of Rochdale in Bloom, Roy Down, said:

“It’s such an honour for the town to have been chosen yet

again to represent the North West, and to have won and

bring gold home, well it’s just unbelievable. On top of that,

achieving the best in category award, well, it’s safe to say

there were some tears!”

“We we’re always going to be the underdogs in this

Friday 11th November 2022

In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row…

And this is the reason that we still wear poppies in the time

leading up to Armistice Day on 11th November of each year.

After the guns fell silent at the end of WW1 the only visible

reminder of the fighting that had raged for the four years

of the war were the poppies that sprang up on the

battlefields, and which became a lasting memory of the

soldiers who had died, as well as inspiring the making and

selling of paper poppies to raise money to support the

soldiers who had been injured in that and subsequent wars.

Every year on 11th November the local Healey, Syke and

Shawclough Remembrance service is held next to the

‘Unknown Soldier’ on the ‘Healey Triangle’ at the junction

of Dell Road and Shawclough Road and a Poppy Wreath is

placed at the soldier’s feet. This year the service will be held at 11am

on Friday 11th November, attended by the local Councillors and led, as

usual, by Kieran Heakin. All residents are welcome to attend – so do

please join us for the service and the Minute’s silence.

The ‘Healey Triangle’ is a particularly apt place for our service because

anyone who has passed by there will have noticed the railway style sign

that says ‘Shawclough & Healey, Healey Dell Gateway’. This is the spot over

which the railway line passed, taking Rochdale and Whitworth soldiers away

to the war, so we will be truly commemorating both them and their families.

Healey Dell itself was also home to the Munitions factories where local

workers (particularly young women) were employed in war work, and

where the reinforced buildings that housed weapons and grenades can still

be seen. We will be remembering the risks taken by these young workers,

as well as the soldiers who never returned to Rochdale.

BONFIRE AND GUY FAWKES NIGHT

Before the control of the ‘organised’

bonfire and firework displays with

which we are so familiar, many

bonfires across the town were

opportunities for communities –

streets, families, neighbourhoods

– to come together and find

entertainment and good company

through food, the excitement of a fire

and fireworks. It was also a chance

for children to make a little money

on the streets.

As suggested earlier, until recently

bonfires after the second world war have

been local community events. They were

also a chance to make a ‘Guy,’ sit him

out on the street and ask passers-by for

money. There had been a tradition of

children doing this from the 18th century,

asking for a ‘penny for the Guy.’ The

quality of the Guy didn’t matter as it was

normally burnt on the bonfire anyway

but it was sometimes no more than a

brush steel with a jacket tied around it on

top of which was a balloon or cardboard

head with the familiar beard drawn on it.

Children would sometimes go door-to-door

asking for money after singing songs like

‘Guy Fawkes Guy’ or ‘Cob Coalin’:

The word bonfire comes from a Middle

English word ‘banefire’, which means a

fire for burning bones as ‘bane’ was an old

word for ‘bone’. Gruesomely, it was often

an occasion when the bones (and bodies)

of religious heretics would be burned. Until

recently, modern day bonfires, however,

were associated with Guy Fawkes Night

and the religious and political plot led

by the Catholic Robert Catesby to blow

up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

Interestingly, there is an alleged local

connection to this plot in that Peter

Heywood (no relation!) who lived at

Heywood Hall was supposedly responsible

for the capture of Guy Fawkes when he

saw Fawkes about to commit the deed

and snatched the torch from him, thus

preventing the destruction of Parliament.

Whether that is true or not is disputable as

Heywood was in fact a magistrate working

in Westminster but was known for his

legal persecution of Catholics so would

have been sympathetic to the capture of

the gunpowder plotters.

They’ve eaten our stockings and part of

our clogs

We’ll get a big axe and we’ll chop their

heads off

And we’ll have a good supper of bugs

heads and broth.’

Preparation for the bonfire itself would

go on for weeks with wood collecting

(which we called ‘bommy wood’) and then

setting guards to defend the wood from

other marauding children from nearby

neighbourhoods who were out to steal

Being brought up on Milnrow Road we

were conscious of boys coming from Tin

Town (near Hornets ground) who thought

nothing of fighting you for your wood.

Before the fire, if your family had the

money, you would go to a shop and buy

fireworks. The fantastic colours of the

fountains and the roman candles, the

pinwheels, the jumping jacks, the rockets

and the bangers would be laid out for sale

on the counter and you would pick the

ones you wanted and bring them home,

ready to ‘light the blue touch paper and

retire immediately’ for safety, not that there

was too much concern for it. Sparklers

would be waved about in the dark, rockets

would be set off from milk bottles and

either soar into the sky or hit nearby

houses and fall fizzing to the ground.

The evening of the bonfire itself usually

started after tea – about seven o’clock -

and people from the houses would gather

round and the fire lit. Soon there would be

a blaze and faces would be glowing in the

heat of the fire. People would set off their

family fireworks which would be watched

by everyone.

There was some sympathy for dogs and

cats on a night when booms and bangs

were frequent, animals often traumatised

indoors with the sounds. Communities

would come together for the food too.

Depending on what various kitchens

could prepare, this would consist of parkin

and treacle toffee, sometimes black peas

and – for those willing to get a hot face –

potatoes roasted whole at the edges of

the fire.

Always a busy night for the fire brigade,

bonfire night used to be a risky, sometimes

dangerous but colourful date on the

calendar, one which brought neighbours

together. Of late, the health and safety

regulations around fires and fireworks has

changed all of that and replaced it with a

safer, organised experience with people

at a safe distance from the action. As a

result of these changes and this ‘progress’

however, the history of the event is being

forgotten as is the loss of bonfire night’s

unifying of households in community.
