Welcome to our
August/September
issue
Councillor Andy Kelly is a keen member
of Whitworth Amateur Dramatics and on
pages 42 and 43 there are some fabulous
photos from a recent production of
Oklahoma in which he was involved.
At the time of writing this, the temperatures are
soaring outside, and people are being advised
to stay indoors and stay cool. So, Rev’d Janet
Pitman’s article about the weather on page
44 got us thinking about weather extremes in
this country and the fact that we often grumble
about the cold and wet as well as extremely hot
temperatures which we are experiencing at the
moment – there seems to be no happy medium!
Gary Heywood Everett has sent us another
great article on Street and Playground Games
played by local children in Rochdale over the
years – Hide and Seek, What Time is it Mr
Wolf? and Kiss Catch to name but a few!
Thanks to the Milnrow WI who have supplied
a delicious Raspberry Sorbet recipe to try,
particular welcome at the moment!
Look out for the October issue dropping through
your letterbox around the end of September.
We wish you all a happy and safe Summer.
Until next time…

Building Sustainable Communities,
Protecting Our Green Belt
– the Places for Everyone Myth?
We are moving rapidly towards
the Public Inquiry in to Places
for Everyone (PfE), the latest
grand plan from the unelected
and barely accountable Greater
Manchester Combined Authority
(GMCA).
It is to be hoped that the Public Inquiry
process will provide an opportunity for
significant amendments, to this proposal,
and for common sense to prevail, as the
plan moves forward.
Why are significant amendments
needed, you may ask – here are a
few reasons:
Calculations: -
The numbers used to justify the whole PfE
scheme are seriously out of date. Brexit,
Covid lockdown and recovery, the war in
Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis, mean
that a comprehensive review using up to
date data is required before the viability
of any such strategy can be assessed.
Democratic Deficit: -
The originating documents for the GMSF
(the precursor to PfE) made it clear that
such a proposal could only move forward
with the unanimous agreement of all
ten Local Authorities within the GMCA.
The proposal was rejected by one of
those Authorities, but the GMCA chose to
charge on regardless- why was this?
Approach To Green Belt; -
The whole approach to developing on
Green Belt within PfE is fundamentally
flawed, and this is of prime importance
to communities in the Rochdale Borough
and throughout the whole of Greater
Manchester. In the case of Rochdale, the
vast majority of entities asked to bring
forward development proposals were
house builders and developers, and
few other bodies were asked to outline
schemes. How surprising is it therefore
that the vast majority of housing sites
brought forward for consideration are
in Green Belt? Large house builders will
40
To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk
always favour developing on Green
Belt because doing so reduces risk
and maximises profits for cash-hungry
enterprises. The above goes some way to
explaining how and why schemes which
will destroy large swathes of local Green
Belt, have been incorporated in PfE.
The idea that “new additions to Green
Belt” incorporated in PfE offset the loss
of existing Green Belt is spurious at best;
what is lost, in many cases, is prime
agricultural land or recreational space
– this is to be replaced with low grade
space of little agricultural or recreational
value. How is this a proportionate
response to a serious loss of resource?
The protections afforded to Green Belt
land are made clear in the National
Planning Policy Framework, particularly
paragraph 147, which states, in relation to
Green Belt:
“Inappropriate development is, by
definition, harmful to the Green Belt and
should not be approved except in very
special circumstances.”
The caveat of “very special
circumstances” is an important exception
to a rule. In numerous cases, Authorities
have construed the maximisation of
Council Tax revenue as a very special
circumstance which overrides any
other detriment or harm caused by
development.
Sustainable Development: -
PfE is littered with development proposals
which do little or nothing to develop and
nurture local communities. Throughout
the document there are schemes which
maximise housing density but fail to add
to the stock of doctors, dentists, schools,
shops, community facilities and public
open spaces. Why is this? Does the
detracts from the profits of builders, or
is it that Planners are so eager to reach
housing targets that other provisions are
not a priority?
The planning system allows developers to
escape the provision of desirable facilities,
on site, by providing a financial sum in
lieu, for use by the local community. This
is known as a Section 106 provision. In a
number of cases, both within Rochdale
and beyond, developers have agreed at
the Committee stage that this provision is
required, only to invent spurious reasons
for non-payment, upon completion. PfE, in
its current form does nothing to address
this issue, so communities will still be
deprived of much needed facilities.
Affordable Housing: -
This is a key part of sustainable
development for vibrant communities,
which is absent, in many cases, from
local PfE proposals. Without genuinely
affordable dwellings for the children of
our residents, how are we supposed to
develop and perpetuate a durable sense
of community amongst residents?
Not The Full Picture; -
The PfE proposals do not tell the full story
of future housing need or provision.
Individual Authorities will still have the
freedom to develop and bring forward
schemes which are not part of PfE. On
that basis, we will all need to pay close
attention to those additional schemes to
get the full picture.
A number of local individuals, interest
groups and elected representatives have
registered themselves as participants
in the Public Inquiry process and it is
to be hoped that their contributions
will be reflected in the Inspectors final
recommendations.
answer lie in the fact that such provision

Whitworth-Oklahoma!
Whitworth AMDS production has
a fresh take on a classic musical
There’s some debate as to what the
first recognisable ‘Book Musical’ was,
some claim Showboat and others
Oklahoma!
The latter certainly contains more
songs which drive the story and has
more memorable ones in my opinion.
Oklahoma! Is often put in the same
basket as other “Cowboy Musicals” but
it is distinctly different. Annie Get Your
Gun and Calamity Jane around 1875
and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in
in the 1850s.
Oklahoma is set in 1906, some thirty to
fifty years later than the others, and the
world had changed in that time. There
had been three Olympic games, the
car and telephone have been invented,
electric street lighting and household
heating was common in cities, and we
were only eight years away from World
War One.
Technology was advancing quickly,
and the world was becoming smaller.
The USA already had 45 states by this
point and Edward VII was into the
fifth year of his reign after the death
of his mother Queen Victoria.
When you arrive at the venue
(St John’s Hall in Whitworth), the
festoon lights guide you to the door
where two (real) horses greet you
and you immediately know you’re
in for something special.
The festoon lighting and giant moon
shine down inside the hall which is
decorated like a barn complete with
straw bales and wooden benches.
Rather like the front seating at the
Royal Exchange, those on the front
seats are up front and personal and
actually join in the action in Act two.
Oklahoma is based on the 1930 play
“Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs
and was written just 24 years after the
events. In context, that’s the same as a
current west end play or tv show being
set in 1998. In fact, think Derry Girls for
historical setting.
And WAMDS tackled this
production with an energy
and personality like no other.
All the principals were great
characters, and they were
believable. You could see,
hear, feel (and if on the bales)
smell the action. Every word,
ye haw and dance step was
delivered with aplomb and
supported by a lively young
company of farmers and
cowgirls.

Special mention has to go the actor
playing Jud Fry though. Every other
production of Oklahoma! I’ve seen
plays him as big brute of a bad guy.
Not here. I actually felt sorry for the
bullied farmhand. He was played with
a delicate pathos that had me rooting
for him in the final scene.
Photographs courtesy of Martin Ogden
Oklahoma! has a lot to say about
attitudes, outsiders, sexual and moral
values, as well as mental health and
yet has somehow become a pastiche
for a safe, boring musical. I don’t
believe that is the case and it certainly
wasn’t the case in the Whitworth
production.

Update from St Thomas’, Newhey
and St James’, Milnrow
Isn’t it funny how the weather affects us?
For most people in this country, the mere sight of the sun
and we cheer up considerably. Our problems seem less and
we tell ourselves that things would be so much better if only
the weather would stay like this. Of course, if it is hot and
sunny for more than a few days we change our minds and
start grumbling about having to work in the heat and not
sleeping well!
Now I know that there is such a thing as ‘seasonally affected
disorder’, a condition that means that some people are badly
affected by the dark days of winter. I had a colleague who
had to move to a brighter part of the country because he
became quite ill working winters in Oldham (no wisecracks about our neighbours, please!).
For most of us we don’t really think about the weather and the time of year when it comes to
our health but I believe we should.
In times past people lived much closer to the land than we do now. Before electric lights and
central heating people would naturally go to bed earlier in the winter than the summer.
They would spend more time outdoors in the summer months and they would eat the fruit
and vegetables that were in season (as well as preserving some for leaner times). There were,
of course, people who suffered from mental ill health then too but not, it seems, to the same
extent as now. It is no secret that fresh air and exercise is good for people’s wellbeing, as is rest
and relaxation.
We are lucky that we are protected from the worst of the weather by modern technology.
Sometimes we don’t appreciate it until we have a power cut, a leak in the roof or we have to cut
back to afford the bills. We need to be careful though. We are seeing the damage we can do to
the environment when we don’t think about it. We waste food and power, we create mountains
of rubbish that we don’t know how to dispose of safely – not on purpose but without thinking
about how our actions affect the world around us.
God created a beautiful world that works impressively well because everything fits together
and we all depend on each other but humankind has become too far removed from the system.
God intended for us to be part of this creation, as stewards and carers of the good things it has
to offer not users and destroyers.
They say the British talk too much about the weather but I think, if we paid a little more
attention to the weather and the seasons and tried to stay part of God’s world instead of just
living off it, we would be happier and healthier all year round.
I hope the weather is to your liking this summer, enough sunshine to play outside (or garden,
or just sit) and enough rain to avoid a hosepipe ban and let’s try and tread lightly on our earth
so there can be many more happy summers in the future.

WI RECIPE
Raspberry Sorbet
With all this lovely
weather we’re having,
the recipe is for a
refreshing raspberry
sorbet.
INGREDIENTS
Serves 4
175g granulated sugar
450g raspberries
Juice of half a lemon
METHOD
1. Put the sugar and 250ml of water in a pan and heat
gently until the sugar has dissolved
2. Once dissolved, increase the heat and boil for
3 minutes until slightly thickened to a syrup. Pour
into a heatproof jug and stir in the lemon juice.
Set aside to cool
3. Mash the raspberries to a rough puree then place
a sieve over a large bowl. Press the puree through
to collect as much juice as possible. Then pour the
cooled syrup though the sieve into the same bowl
4. Mix the juice and syrup then pour into a freezer
proof container with a tight fitting lid.
Freeze for 2 hours
5. After 2 hours, use a fork to break up any ice crystals
so the mixture is smooth
6. Repeat the 2 hour freezing and breaking of crystals
a further 3 or 4 times until the sorbet is fully set
7. Enjoy with fresh fruit.

From The Archives
Starting street
games and
deciding who
was ‘on’ was
always an
interesting thing
to do. Round my
way in Milnrow
we used to do
‘One potato’ but
first say ‘Spuds
up’ which meant that in a circle the
children would put up their fists.
The ‘counter’ would start by counting
themselves (touching your own mouth
was the way to do that) and then go
round the raised spuds (fists) until
someone was left. The counting would
be ‘One potato, two potato, three potato,
four, five potato, six potato, seven potato
- MORE.’ This hand would be removed,
and the rhyme started again. Whoever
had a fist left at ‘MORE’ was ‘on’ at
whatever game was taking place. In some
towns the counter was known as the
‘dipper’ and this style of deciding who is
‘on’ takes on different forms throughout
the world. For example in Scotland the
rhyme is ‘Olicka, bolicka, Susan solicka,
Olicka bolicka, NOB.’
Of course one of the most popular of
street games was Hide and Seek. Whilst
one person counts (often to 100 in 5’s)
the others run away and hide. After
counting, the seeker often used to shout
‘Coming ready or not!’ and go to look
for everybody. (In Leicestershire they
STREET GAMES
it was my thumb, I give you all a warning,
And here I come!’) Each child caught, had
to stay with the catcher until everybody
was caught. This game could go on for
some time especially if the others were
well hidden. If the game had to be ended
early – children might have been called
home – the seeker would sometimes
call ‘All in! All in!’ and the game was
prematurely completed.
Then there was ‘What time is it Mr Wolf?’
This game involves one child (the wolf)
walking along the street with the other
children following behind. The children
then cry out ‘What time is it Mr Wolf’ and
the wolf says (for example) ‘Five O’clock.’
At that, the group of children get a bit
nearer the back of the wolf. The question
is asked again and the wolf makes up
another time of day. At one point though,
the answer comes from the wolf ‘Dinner
Time!’ and the wolf turns quickly and
tries to catch one of the children who is
then the wolf and everyone goes back
to the start. Similar games are played
throughout Europe and beyond. In Cairo
they shout ‘O Wolf, O Wolf, where are
you going?’ and the wolf eventually
answers ‘To Eat you Up!’ as they chase
the children.
One game which brought the sexes
together of course was Kiss Catch. This
was a variation on the game of tig with
the addition of boys chasing girls or vice
versa and when caught they gave the
other a kiss. In the Opie’s research for
their book on children’s games, one girl
shouted ‘I hold my little finger, I thought said that ‘according to who’s chasing
46

you, sometimes you run fast, sometimes
you hardly run at all.’ I recall that if you
wanted to call a halt to any ‘tig’ game
like this you could put up your thumbs
and say ‘Barley’ which may have been a
corruption of ‘Parlez’ or a wish to talk or
negotiate.
One game more often played by girls than
boys was ‘Queenieo-coco.’ This involved
one child being ‘it’ who threw a small
ball behind her so that someone (unseen)
would catch it. The ball would then be
hidden behind someone’s back and the
person ‘on’ turns round.
The larger group, often in a line, then
chanted ‘Queenieo-coco who’s got
the ball? I haven’t got it. It isn’t in my
pocket, Queenieo-coco who’s got the
ball?’ A person is picked as having the
ball and if correct stays as ‘Queenie’ but
if a wrong girl is picked, the one who
was successful in hiding it takes her
place. In Lincoln a similar game is called
‘Ellabella, Cinderalla’ but is played in
more or less the same way.
Whilst the girls were playing Queenieococo,
the boys, somewhere where there
was a grassy place might be playing
‘Split the Kipper.’ Although seeming
dangerous, this was a popular game
played with a knife, often a sheath knife.
Two boys would face each other with feet
together and one would throw the knife
and make it stick into the ground within
a few inches off the other boy’s foot. This
boy would then have to stretch out his leg
and put his foot where the knife landed.
It was his turn then and the stretch
between the legs established for both.
If you threw the knife between the legs of
the other boy you could start again. This
was ‘splitting the kipper’. If one of them
couldn’t stretch to put his foot where the
knife landed or fell over when trying,
they lost. Stories of mill-lads playing
this game with spindles sends a chill
down the spine but they would have been
wearing clogs!
A less dangerous and mixed gender
contest involved lolly sticks. After eating
an ice lolly, the wooden sticks could be
used in competition. One child held their
stick horizontally between both hands
whilst the opposing child whacked the
stick with their stick, holding it with a
stiff index finger for strength.
If the other child’s stick didn’t break, it
was their ‘go’ and this continued until
one of the sticks broke under a hit. A
similar contest but without lolly sticks
was ‘Knuckles’ where children (usually
boys) would face off one fist against
another. Having ‘goes in turns,’ each
would try to strike the other’s knuckle
although if you moved your fist quickly
you could avoid being struck. The loser
was the one who gave in first or the bell
or whistle went to end playtime!
If you have any memories or comments about Street or Playground games, I’d be
delighted to hear from you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject.

Milnrow Memorial Park
to Jubilee Colliery Workings
and Higher Park and return
via Dunwood Park
Leave Milnrow Memorial Park by heading uphill to
the right of the Cenotaph and exiting the park onto
the footpath leading to Bradley Lane. Continue along
this path onto Church Lane and passing St Thomas’s
Church on your left and then the School on your right.
At the bottom of the hill turn left onto Huddersfield
Rd. Walk along the road for a short distance before
turning right into Haugh Lane.
Continue along Haugh Lane bearing left into Haugh
Fold. Walk through Haugh Fold and turn first right,
immediately after a row of terraced houses, into a
lane with a sign for No Through Road.
Take this footpath (which depending on the time of
year can become very overgrown in places) down
the hill to its junction, bearing sharp right then sharp
left, to join a track that leads downhill to the former
Jubilee Colliery Workings.
Follow this track as far as the Level Crossing turning
left just before the crossing gate.
Follow this lane uphill to Top O’th Hill Farm, continue
past the farm buildings then turn right and pass
through the farmyard to the public footpath at the far
end of the yard. There is a stile to the right of the gate.
Walk a short distance along this track and take the
first footpath off to your left, there is a blue container
visible on your right which serves as a good marker
for this footpath.
Continue along this path which does take you back in
the direction that you have just come before bearing
to the right, bringing you to a set of steps.

Keep on along this footpath which has further steps
along it. Eventually you will cross another path to
reach a stile that leads onto a footpath between two
fields that takes you out onto Higher Park. Please
remember to close all gates behind you.
Turn to your right and follow this lane downhill.
At the bottom of the hill cross Milnrow Road bearing
slightly right to enter Dunwood Park Courts.
Once over the bridge turn to your right and enter
Dunwood Park. Walking through this lovely park you
will pass by a bowling green and tennis courts before
also passing by the cafe and toilets. It is often well
worth taking a few minutes to enjoy a refreshing
“cuppa” (or an ice-cream on a hot day) before
continuing on your way through the park.
At the far end of the park you will exit along a cobbled
path to its junction with Milnrow Road. Cross over the
road and go to your right, crossing over the bridge
before turning left (immediately before the former
Jubilee Pub) to walk through the former Colliery
workings and along the track to the level crossing
gate, turn left through the gate and carefully cross
the tramlines to rejoin Milnrow Rd. Bear right at this
point and continue towards Milnrow until you reach
a former mill complex where you will turn right down
the short slope then turning left and right to come out
onto Two Bridges Road.
Turn right here and follow the road over the tram track
before turning left into Railway Street. At the end of
this street cross Huddersfield Road and make your
way up the steps alongside the School. At the top
of the steps turn left and follow the road up past the
Church and onto Bradley Lane to re-enter Milnrow
park and return to the starting point.
Gweneth Smith
Walk Leader
Continue along this road and bearing left, then right
to leave the estate using the passage between the
houses onto Bridge St.
Turn right at this point and cross over the tramlines
using the footbridge.

A TRIP TO LLANDUDNO
Members of Milnrow Walking Group
along with some of their friends
recently enjoyed a visit by coach
to Llandudno.
The group met outside the Moonspinners pub
to wait for the coach which arrived on time, and
we left Milnrow well prepared with waterproof
jackets, strong walking shoes and packed
lunches ready for a good day out.
After a steady journey, our driver Robert pulled
up into the coach parking area and we all split
up into small groups to go our various ways.
Several groups headed into a nearby retail
park to avail themselves of the facilities and
refreshments on offer before setting out for
their walks.
The fitter and more energetic walkers set off to
walk up, around, and back down Great Orme.
Some groups went up Great Orme on the Tram
and walked down using various routes. Whilst
others went up and down on the tram or walked
partway down before getting the tram for the
rest of the journey.
On arrival at the top of Great Orme, we
disembarked the tram to be met with blustery
wind and showers, but this didn’t stop our
intrepid group from finding somewhere
sheltered to eat their packed lunches or a hot
drink at the cafe on the summit.
On return to sea level, we were met with warm
sunshine encouraging many to go for a walk
along the promenade. There was also time
for some to visit the shops or go for a coffee
before meeting up with the coach.
One pair of intrepid walkers set out to walk
across the town to the West Beach and then
returned by walking round the bottom of
the ‘Orme’ with time to have a coffee before
rejoining the group on the coach.
The conversations on the return journey were
very lively, with group members sharing their
experiences - how windy it had been, how cold
the wind was on the summit, the driving rain,
the lovely warm sunshine on the promenade,
beautiful views, the gulls on the promenade
especially the one with the big mouth and of
course the big question - When and Where will
the next trip be!
The return journey went well until we reached
the Greater Manchester area where we were
met with traffic jams. However, our driver took
it nice and steady and coped with the traffic
build up with great patience getting us back to
Milnrow safely although a little bit later
than planned.
It was a particularly good day out enjoyed by
everyone and we extend our grateful thanks to
Barry who organized the trip, the driver Robert
and to the walk leaders without whom this
group wouldn’t function.
Gweneth Smith (Walk Leader)
Sadly, we recently lost one of our walk
leaders in a tragic accident whilst he and his
wife were on holiday. John was a cheerful and
enthusiastic member of the group, and he will
be greatly missed by all the walking group.
RIP John.
Our condolences, thoughts and prayers
go out to his family.

IN THE GARDEN
GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE
FOR AUGUST
1. Keep lavender bushes neat and tidy by trimming after flowering but take care not to cut back
into the old wood as this could kill it off.
2. Hoe beds and borders regularly to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed.
3. Now is an ideal time to take cuttings from certain plants like fuchsias, salvias and
pelargoniums. Once rooted, place in small individual pots and try to keep them cool, relatively
dry and in full light.
4. Check your hanging baskets and containers regularly for faded blooms and foliage,
and dead head where necessary to prolong flowering.
5. Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs,
rock plants, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have
collected is fantastically rewarding; collect when nearly ripe – just as
they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag,
label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry.
6. Harvest blackberries, raspberries, loganberries, apricots, early apples
and pears.
