WHITWORTH RUSHCART

PROCESSION AND CELEBRATIONS

The event of the year, ‘Whitworth Rushcart’ celebrations,

will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 4 September 2022.

The procession will leave from Whitworth Museum, North Street, Whitworth at 1.00pm and will feature

numerous traditional morris dance troupes (including the famous Britannia Coconutters and the

Whitworth Morris Men). It will travel up the main road, led by the Rushcart itself, arriving at the Ashcroft

at approximately 1.20pm.

From 1.15pm until 4.30pm, the car park of The Ashcroft will be cordoned off for stalls, entertainments, and

performances from the various morris dancing troupes including the Whitworth Rushcart Men and the

Britannia Coconutters, plus the Whitworth Vale and Healey Youth Band. St Bartholomew’s Church will be

providing traditional hot food, and the Ashcroft bar will be open for liquid refreshments. There will also

be an Arts and Craft Fair, featuring a variety of artisan stalls in the Ashcroft main hall – there are a limited

number of stalls still available, please contact the office for a booking form. There will also be rides, face

painting and other entertainments.

The Tourism and Leisure Committee of Whitworth Town Council has been working alongside the multiagency

Events Safety Group on this year’s festivities. The Whitworth Rushcart is one of only four such

celebrations which still take place in the UK, the others being in Sowerby Bridge, Littleborough and

Saddleworth. Whitworth’s cart is unique in that it is the only one in the UK to be covered in beautiful local

heather that is in bloom at this time of year, collected by the Whitworth Rushcart Men from the moors

above Darwen before the event; Rushcarts in the other areas are covered with rushes or tatters of cloth.

Whitworth’s Rushcart history goes back hundreds of years; initially the celebration was linked into the

cutting and collection of rushes to be strewn on the bare earth or stone flagged floor of the church as a

form of insulation for the winter to come, taken to the church on the cart. Out of this grew a celebration

which was enjoyed by the whole community. In the 1970s and 1980s the Rushcart was the highlight

of the Whitworth Fair week; in recent times the week-long festivities have passed into history however

the popularity of the Rushcart itself in Whitworth is strong. The Rushcart now takes place on a Sunday

afternoon each September rather than its traditional Friday night slot, and has become more familyfocused,

attracting 1,500 visitors annually.

BUT! Organisers need help!

An input of new, younger volunteers to get involved and carry on the tradition. Some of the garland

dancers were there when the Rushcart was revived in 1976 and they are getting on a bit!

For most dance sides it is a hobby, practising and performing regularly through the year. The

Whitworth Rushcart dancers are purely ceremonial, they meet up before the event to run through

the dance, help build the cart, dress up for the day and lead the procession then meet up for a pint

afterwards - that’s it for the next 12 months. It is more like turning out for the Village Fete tug of war

team once a year than being committed to membership of a club.

The garland dance should be done with 16 but hasn’t been since the early 90’s. Now it is hard to find

8 to 10 of the original dancers who are fit enough to turn out. Six years ago some of the wives and

daughters joined in to help keep numbers up so there is room for the ladies too. The broom girls, cart

pullers and general helpers also need new blood so if dancing isn’t your thing, don’t worry.

Abraham’s Pocket

John Bright, Rochdale’s most famous son, was born at

Greenbank in 1811 and was the son of a local cotton mill

owner and was brought up as a Quaker.

He became interested in politics and became Member of

Parliament for Durham and then Manchester but sticking to his

Quaker beliefs of peace and justice, he lost his Parliamentary

seat for opposing Britain’s war in the Crimea against Russia in

1854 this subsequently led to thousands of casualties and was

made infamous by Tennyson’s poem about the Charge of the

Light Brigade.

Moving on, he was described by his peers as one of the

greatest orators of his time and along with Richard Cobden

MP they were accredited as the instigators of the repeal of the

Corn Laws (a tax on imported goods) and for this the ‘Rochdale

Radical’ was made the President of the Board of Trade by

William Gladstone in his Liberal Government.

During his time in Parliament he coined the phrase “flogging

a dead horse” after trying to rouse Parliament into introducing

more votes for working people, at that time, only a limited

number of men and no woman at all, had the vote.

He built and lived in One Ash off Mizzy Rd.

He continued to promote free trade and was instrumental in

the Government of the day, supporting the Northern cause in the American

Civil War.

John Bright died in 1889 aged 76 and was buried in the Quaker cemetery

in Ball St., just behind the Townhead Junction.

His memory lives on and as well as the Statue in Broadfield Park two

others, one in Manchester and the other in Birmingham, stand in memory

and recognition to one Britain’s most successful Victorian politicians.

And Abraham’s Pocket, well John Bright stuck up a long standing friendship

with the American President and famously against slavery he had a

marked influence on the US President, so much so that following Abraham

Lincoln’s assassination a letter from John Bright in support of Lincoln’s

GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE

FOR AUGUST

1. Keep lavender bushes neat and tidy by trimming after flowering but take care not to cut back

into the old wood as this could kill it off.

2. Hoe beds and borders regularly to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed.

3. Now is an ideal time to take cuttings from certain plants like fuchsias, salvias and

pelargoniums. Once rooted, place in small individual pots and try to keep them cool, relatively

dry and in full light.

4. Check your hanging baskets and containers regularly for faded blooms and foliage,

and dead head where necessary to prolong flowering.

5. Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs,

rock plants, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have

collected is fantastically rewarding; collect when nearly ripe – just as

they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag,

label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry.

6. Harvest blackberries, raspberries, loganberries, apricots, early apples

and pears.

INGREDIENTS

4 egg whites

400g ground almonds

280g granulated sugar

1 tsp orange oil

50g ground flax seeds (linseed)

Finely grated rind 2 oranges

4 tbsps icing sugar

14 whole almonds

METHOD

1. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

2. Whisk egg yolks until they just form stiff peaks with an

electric whisk and mix in all other ingredients, except icing

sugar and whole almonds, until you have a sticky dough.

3. Dust your hand with icing sugar.

4. Divide the dough into 14 pieces and roll each into a ball and

into icing sugar before placing on a baking tray and topping

with an almond. Squash flatter with the palm of your hand.

5. Bake at 180C/gas 4 for 15 minutes.

6. These should be firm and chewy but not hard when cool.

Store in an airtight tin.
