Retirement isn’t what it used to be. We’re working longer, living longer and have so many

different ways to use our pension pot. All the more reason to get the experts involved

These days there’s so much flexibility around

retirement. You can choose to stay invested in your

pension, decide your own level of income, or even

withdraw the entire pot. Buying an annuity is now

another choice, rather than being non-negotiable.

important short- and long-term decisions

Meanwhile, as always, greater freedom brings

greater responsibility. You’ve got to make sure those

retirement savings last. It’s a thorny business full of

tough decisions, made even trickier by the number

of options available.

Let’s look at retirement age to begin with. The cliff-edge

idea of stopping work at 60 or 65 and ‘being retired’

is history. Today a phased approach is much more

likely, transitioning gradually from working and

saving towards leisure and spending. Most of us

can do this on our terms, according to our own life

plans, rather than being restricted by a pension

scheme or an employer.

Visualise your retirement

Ask yourself what your retirement looks like. Then how

can you make it a reality? If you’re retired already, is

it as you imagined? Being ‘in retirement’ is much more

than simply drawing an income. It’s also about

running an efficient home, managing your tax-free

cash (especially when interest rates are low) and

building a sustainable income that will last your lifetime.

There’s no set retirement age these days. Add to this

the pressures of supporting both older and younger

generations, and it’s clear a rethink is needed on

how best to use your savings. To adapt to changing

needs, you might need to consider other assets and

income sources alongside your pension.

So what you have is a situation that’s both flexible

and heavy on risk, whether you choose to dip into

your pension pot or remain invested. Either way,

you’ll need help and expertise to face the challenges.

In retirement you’re also likely to encounter a

new set of risks. For example, if you get off to a

poor start when you begin drawing your income,

with markets falling and returns negative, your

investments will have to work much harder from

the outset to maintain your desired income.

Another layer of complexity in your retirement

strategy is underestimating how long your money

needs to last. The 100-year life is fast becoming

normal, with more of us living much longer, more

active lives than ever before.

October Update

Heywood Give Warm Welcome

to the Royal Horticultural Society Judges

Heywood gave a warm welcome to the Royal Horticultural Society judges

in July. The judges John Bilsborough and Anne Gunning enjoyed a two-day

tour of Heywood’s beautiful floral displays.

The weather was warm and

sunny prompting a lovely outside

lunch in the Cherwell Centre

Garden. The results will be

announced on 18th/20th October

at Bolton Reebok centre. We look

forward to bringing back another

gold award for 2022.

Our volunteers have been kept

busy looking after our saddle

baskets tiered planter etc,

keeping everything watered

through the weeks of sunny

summer. The allotment thrived

giving us a bounty of vegetables

and fruit thanks to the volunteers

who watered daily.

Through the long weeks of

summer our volunteers joined

forces with Friends of Queens

Park/Heywood Rotary helping

with their many events in the

park. The park hosted a large

event for the Queens Jubilee,

car boot sales, brass bands, dog

show, Punch & Judy show and

last but not least Heywood’s

Charities Fete.

Rochdale Town Hall, a masterpiece

deserving of celebration

Rochdale Town Hall, widely regarded as one of the finest in

the country, is currently undergoing a multi-million pound

restoration which includes £8.9m from the lottery fund.

Phase two of the project is under way with the town hall due to reopen

next year in late summer 2023.

The aim is to return it to the original splendour of when it first opened

in 1871 and for it to be a building for the enjoyment of everyone.

Rooms are being developed into exhibition spaces to tell Rochdale’s

story alongside a new Bright Hall for events.

The Bright Hall is named after Rochdalian John Bright, a politician

and mill owner from the 1800s. He famously led the repeal of the Corn

Laws which placed tariffs on food imports making it too expensive to

bring in cereals from abroad, creating food shortages.

As you can imagine, the work taking place is comprehensive.

Renovations are taking place from the ground up to the installation

of a new roof. Hidden improvements include developing a more

environmentally friendly building including installing new insulation.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equalities, safety and

reform at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The restoration and

the way the town hall will subsequently be used for all residents is

fantastic news for the borough.

“The building is a beacon for the whole region, it displays magnificent

gothic architecture and once complete will continue to shine for

generations to come.”

Much of the cleaning and repair is being carried out on site, especially

to the stained glass that adorns the building throughout. Some of that

has been transported to York for key preservation.

Most significantly the town hall is being made accessible. There will

be new ramps to make getting into the building easier and a new lift is

being installed.

Outside, the area is being completely landscaped with some new

grassed areas to complement new paving in a new Town Hall Square

that will be used for events.

Integral to the project are the large number of local residents who

have volunteered to give their time in assisting with the restoration

work. Their efforts have been key to driving the project forward and in

keeping it running to schedule.

One thing the town hall team are proud to be delivering upon opening is a new Welcome Gallery.

This will feature items and photographs that portray memories associated with the town hall.

Donations or long-term loans are still welcome, plus stories you may have that will remind visitors

of times past from events like festivals to other public gatherings.

Josh is a place where children feel safe,

secure, and have their physical needs met,

enabling them to #ConnectSupportThrive.

The team at Jolly Josh are urging the families

of those who can benefit from the inclusive,

tailored, free of charge sessions, to come along

to Jolly Josh, which is based at Ensor Mill,

Queensway, Castleton.

“We have a timetable of age-appropriate

sessions for children and young adults between

0 and 19”, explained Lead Session Facilitator,

Rachel Bell. “The Centre has a range of

equipment to enable everyone access to play

and socialize. We now hold 8 sessions across

the week including evenings and weekends

and on Tuesday mornings we also invite a

visiting professional to provide valuable advice

in an informal setting” added Rachel.

Beginning in October, visitors can also benefit

from the Centre’s new Hydrotherapy Pool.

Hydrotherapy sessions are a multi-sensory

environment which help to stimulate a child’s

senses at the same time as having a calming

effect for those with physical, sensory and

learning difficulties.

“All of our sessions have such a positive impact”

added Rachel, “It’s also an opportunity for

parents and carers to meet up with and support

each other, connect with visiting professionals

and spend quality time creating special forever

memories”.

Jolly Josh is a Registered Charity based in

Castleton which was founded by devoted

mum Carole following the passing of her son

Josh, at just 15 months old. A healthy child at

birth, Josh’s health deteriorated at 4 months

of age and Carole’s journey and experiences

before his passing inspired her to establish

the specialist Centre, Jolly Josh.

5 years on and having received fantastic

support, Jolly Josh opened a brand-new

centre in Castleton solely for children with

Profound and Multiple Learning disabilities,

complex medical needs or physical disability.

Jolly Josh provides children of varying age

groups in the Borough with a safe place to

meet and engage with other children, along

with peer support for their families. Jolly

Josh’s aim is to connect with, support and

help thrive the children and families for

who other local groups and facilities are not

accessible or appropriate.

THE DIALECT MONUMENT 4: OLIVER ORMEROD

The art of dialect writing looks to

celebrate the local sounds, lexicon

and construction alive in the spoken

language of a particular place.

Lancashire dialect has its own

idiosyncrasies, especially its flattened

vowels and shortened words but it’s

important to note that there are further

aural distinctions that can be made

when looking at dialects from individual

towns. Oldham and Manchester

dialects differ from those from

Blackburn and Burnley and Rochdale

has its own ‘voice,’ a voice which is

particularly admired in the history of

dialect literature. The celebration of

it is commemorated in two places in

Rochdale.

Obviously, there is the resting place

of John Collier, better known as Tim

Bobbin, in the graveyard of St Chad’s

Church and as a dialect writer he was

important in capturing the voice of the

people, especially the working people

of the town. Tim Bobbin was a rather

eccentric but powerful dialect model, but

he was followed by four Rochdale dialect

writers in the nineteenth century who

made their mark.

These four dialect writers are

commemorated by a monument in

Broadfield Park which serves to

remember the works of Edwin Waugh,

Margaret Lahee, John Trafford Clegg and

Oliver Ormerod was born in 1811 and

in mid-life became an honoured and

worthy member of the town’s cultural

society, being a prominent contributor to

the Rochdale Literary and Philosophical

Society and taking part in the radical

politics of the town. These interests

are clear in his writing, especially

in his rather satirical take on the

establishment.

Writing from an early age, Ormerod

came to prominence when he wrote and

published a prose account concerning

The Great Exhibition held at the Crystal

Palace in London. This dialect piece

was more than simple journalism

as it caught through dialect what a

northern man might feel about an event

taking place far away in the capital.

These recollections of his visit to the

exhibition were published by Dr Henry

Colley March who was also a surgeon

at Rochdale Infirmary and one of the

founders of the Rochdale Literary and

Scientific Society.

In his writing, Ormerod expressed a

wish to hone his ‘native handiwork’

and try to capture his recollections, not

simply in the northern dialect but in a

dialect particular to Rochdale.

He did this in his book of 1851 entitled O

Ful, Tru, un Pertikler Okeaawnt o bwoth

wat aw seed un wat aw yerd, we gooin too

the subject of this article, Oliver Ormerod.

In a modern ‘translation’ this would be

‘A full, true, and particular account of

both what I saw and heard when going

to the Great Exhibition, and London,

and a great deal of information besides.’

Even from the title it is easy to see

the comic and rather satirical side of

Ormerod’s writing, characteristics of

which Tim Bobbin would have approved.

Later, in 1856 Ormerod published

further personal accounts of being a

Rochdalian in his book ‘Rachde Felley’

which ran to a number of editions and

sold well nationally. His avowed intent

was to show to a wider audience the

rich tones and the local vocabulary that

existed in the town’s dialect but also

to do this with a sense of Rochdale

comedy.

We can see the local wit of Ormerod in

the following passage about his visit to

the Great Exhibition (I would love you to

try to read the dialect version out loud

before looking at the ‘translation’):

“Wel, us aw wor gooin hinto won uth

reawms, whoo shud aw see but Sam

o’Jacks fro Owdum. E wor us gloppent

up seein me us aw wor ut seein im.

Sam’s o reglur rufyed, fur they koen

Owdum foke rufyeds oppo sum keawnt,

aw dunnut eggsaktly kno wat fur but ony

buddi e Rachde knone us it is so.”

In translation this would be:

‘Well, as we were going into one of the

[Great Exhibition] rooms, who should

I see but Sam O’Jacks from Oldham.

He was as stunned to see me as I were

at seeing him. Sam is a regular rough

head, for they call Oldham folk rough

heads upon some count, I don’t exactly

know what for but anybody in Rochdale

knows that it is so.’

Ormerod’s expressions and renditions

of the language of folk from the town

are notable for having been written with

good humour and sensitivity. They

certainly don’t look down on ordinary

people and in fact serve to value the

language and culture of ordinary

Rochdale people.

Not known as widely as Edwin Waugh

nor as culturally significant as Margaret

Lahee, nonetheless Oliver Ormerod

earned his place on the Broadfield Park

memorial and his dialect writing still

captures a poetic vernacular which is

rich in local history and which identifies

Rochdale as ‘home’ in a distinctive

literary way.

One Crust

Fruit Pie

This is by far the easiest fruit pie I have

ever made. It uses shortcrust pastry that

can be either homemade or bought and

any fruit you may have at any time of year.

It is best served straight from the oven

with cream, crème fraiche, ice cream

or custard. I will be using Apples and

Blackberries- both in abundance at this

time of year.

INGREDIENTS

PASTRY

225g plain flour

50g butter

50g white fat- lard, Trex or

white Flora

2 teaspoons caster sugar

Cold water – 1 teaspoon per

25g flour at least

FILLING

450g cooking apples- peeled,

cored and sliced

225g Blackberries, washed

and dehulled and dried on

kitchen paper

1 tablespoon of semolina

50g soft brown sugar

(ground spices can also be

added depending on the

fruits used, eg cinnamon,

nutmeg, allspice, ginger)

1 egg white

METHOD

1. Make the pastry by rubbing the fats into the flour until it resembles

fine breadcrumbs.

2. Using a round bladed knife, mix together with cold water to make a

smooth dough that is not sticky.

3. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead very gently, place in a

covered bowl in the fridge whilst you prepare the fruits.

4. Prepare the apples and place in a bowl with the blackberries, stir in

the sugar.

5. Place the pastry on the middle of a flat baking sheet and roll into a

circle, turning tray as you roll. Sprinkle a 25.5cm circle in the centre

of the pastry with the semolina.

6. Pile the fruit into the centre and turn the edges of the pastry on top

to partially enclose the fruit, don’t worry if the pastry breaks just

patch it up , it is meant to look ragged and interesting.

7. Brush with beaten egg white and sprinkle the sugar over the top.

8. Bake at Gas 6, 200C or 180C fan oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until

the pastry has browned and the fruit is cooked.

9. Serve straight from the oven.

Other fruits to use: Apple and raspberry, Apple and

strawberry, Apricots, Plums, Greengages, Cherries,

Pears, Cranberry apple and orange or what ever combination

you have or like
