ARTISTS, CARTOONISTS, DESIGNERS AND THE
REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
The two major political parties are
ramping up for their conventions this
week and next. The influence of art and
design is understated in the influence
this has on politics. For example the
logo of the Republican National
Convention was designed by a Cleveland,
Ohio advertising firm, Falls Communications.
They were asked to provide
between 10 to 20 proofs of design
ideas to be selected from. Instead they
provided 178 options. The owner of the
firm stated, “ this is too important to the
City....and to Ohio.... we pulled out all
the stops.” The final
logo that was selected includes a guitar
lying on it’s side with the Republican
Elephant walking on it with the words
RNC, 2016 CLEVELAND. the guitar
signifying the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in Cleveland. The logo’s design is
composed to be used in large banners
down to lapel pins.
It is not a secret that the presumtive
nominee for the Republican party this
year is Donald Trump. Trump has
shown himself to be one of the most
ridiculous of all the nominees ever
brought before the Party and the United
States. However his selection is an
example of the non-functioning ability
of the Republicans to govern during the
last 8 years. Their complete emphasis
has been to restrict and prevent legislation,
which has been detrimental to
the country in many areas. The birth
of Donald Trump as the presumptive
nominee was a predictable outcome of
the dis-functionality of the Party.
Political cartoonist throughout the
world have created cartoons on the general
disbelief of Trump as a presidential
nominee of the United States. Displayed
in this article is the cartoon version of a
Canadian cartoonist depicting the birth
of Donald Trump to the Republican
Party.
Trump can not be pinned down on his
stand on LGBT rights, gay marriage,
or other issues pertaining to the LGBT
community. for example, his stand on
marriage demonstrates him quoting, he
supports “traditional marriage”, whatever
that may imply in Trump language. His
flip flopping on gay rights in general is
about as confusing as it is on all other
issues. The only thing that can be said
about his stand is that no one knows
where he stands. Very dangerous for a
presidential candidate in a democratic
republic.
At any rate, enjoy the Republican National
Convention this week on television.
How images are used in the Democratic
National Convention, next week.
Who Cares?
Pokemon is an investors dream. Nintendo’s
stock skyrocketed 33 percent on Monday
as the company’s new smartphone game
Pokémon GO gains popularity. Pokémon
GO launched last week and surpassed
Whatsapp, Instagram, and Twitter in the
amount of time spent in the app. Since
Pokemon started out as a video game for
What Is it
Nintendo, as it’s purpose was what lead
For many, this app
to Pokemon Go. Released on time for
felt like a dream
Pokemon’s 20th anniversary, Pokemon Go
come true, as it was released through the Apple App Store
uses your gps
and The Google Play Store on July 6th. Having
made it’s way to the number one spots
to guide you to
Pokemon monsters
in the App Stores in less than 24 hours,
all throughout your
Pokemon Go has marked a huge success in
current location. making $9 Billion from it’s release to this
The goal of this
day. People from 12 to 30 are its buyers ands
game is to catch
that will grow each year because so few will
Pokemon and
visit fixed locations
like bars
and statues, called
Pokestops and
The Barracks Pokemon
Gyms, where
you do battle with other Pokemon characters
which are added when some one first
visits that gym. Pokestops/Gyms can range
from a variety of fixed locations and monuments
such as the The Toolshed’s Tom of
Finland cutouts on the wall, the hanging
even the Bronze Lucille Ball sitting at a
age out of this iconic game. Toys and merchandising
alone will fuel its growth and
already collectibles like #1 Pikachu Illustrator
Cards (printed) sell for upwards of
$50,000.
There are problems however as with
the makers of Pokemon Go were forced to
make emergency fixes to the game because
the app gave the company an unprecedented
level of access into players’ personal
lives. Also the use of adult locations acre
currently included because it uses that
same landmark database. I not sure Americans
share this level tolerance but I expect
a massive conservative backlash any day
now.
Still Pokemon Go is not just an update to
last generation’s Game Boy and its incredibly
innovative design Pokemon has made
its way onto iOS and Android, but this
time, it’s different.
Instead it’s a free mobile game that lets you
see Pokemon through the window of your
phone as if they existed in the real world.
Then, you can catch them. (“Gotta catch
‘em all!”)
do you Remember the ‘90s? Kids growing
up back then played Pokemon video games
on their Game Boys, watched Pokemon
cartoons and movies, and battled it out
with Pokemon cards during their lunch
breaks at school. A lot of these kids never
really stopped doing that. The last two Nintendo
3DS Pokemon video games sold 25
million copies, combined.
Pokemon has been around for over 20
years now. The first games were black and
white.
Know your History
BTW, Pokemon is short for “pocket monster.”
They’re tiny monsters. (Pokemon is a
Japanese compound word, and is both singular
and plural.) So its not like cruelty to
animals as some will argue.
Warnings
“For safety’s sake, never play Pokémon
GO when you’re on your bike, driving a
car, riding a hoverboard, or anything else
where you should be paying attention, and
of course never wander away from your
group to catch a Pokémon.”
DBA Member Spotlight:
Shann Carr, of the Borey
Group at Keller Williams
Realty
This week we saw Shann Carr in the spotliight
with the local Desert Business Association; the
comic, entertainer, do-gooder and woman about
town has been involved with the organization
for years. We could not agree more. Everything
Carr does pop, in unusual ways. Beside being
a one person promotion machine, international
comedian and spokesperson, she has motivated
many other people to challenge themselves and
the community to be better, to have more fun
and get shit done!
The DBA lets us know she became a licensed
Realtor, and works for the Carl Borey Group at
Keller Williams. here are some Q&A they listed
with the venerable Carr.
How long have you been in the Coachella Valley?
Since the summer of 1998.
What brought you here? A past girlfriend was
transferred from our lovely home--which had
been provided by her state parks job at Half
Moon Bay State Beach--to a state-issued trailer,
at a park in Perris. I explained that I couldn’t
tell my mom that I was moving to Paris ... and
then have to clarify that. I agreed to leave the
Bay Area if she’d commute from the gayest town
nearby. Neither of us had ever been to Palm
Springs.
How did someone well-known as a comedian
wind up working in real estate with Carl Borey?
I want to create a gay*ish, full-service resort/
entertainment complex in Palm Springs--a compound
with 100-plus rooms with an entertainment
and media-production focus; a destination
that engages guests and locals with multiple
options for dining, dancing, shopping, swimming
and regular events. The Moxie Complex will
feature an entertainment focus ranging from
filming live programming to being an office
hub for other media-based businesses like gay
mags and booking, talent and PR firms. When
Carl Borey pointed out that a real estate license
gets me a 3 percent commission on a hotel-sized
purchase ... I was sold. Also I knew that I could
bring something special to Carl’s vision to build
a FRESH and positive kind of real estate team.
As the Borey Group’s “Vibe Manager,” I know I am
doing that.
What are your ultimate goals, business-wise?
I want to be part of making Palm Springs the
place that gay, fringe and new media is made.
I want Palm Springs to name and claim itself
as the incubator for new media in the way that
Nashville did with country music, like other cities
do with other industries. I want to help Palm
Springs create an industry home so that young
gay entertainment professionals dream of coming
here to work at the cusp of what is new in
media and entertainment.
We can add the that by saying you go Girlllll
You deserve a choice
For 23 years, California tried to pass Medical Aid in Dying legislation, to give people the
entire range of choice at the end of life. This is about informed choice and selfdetermination.
The law finally passed and went into effect June 9. California now joins
four other states with similar legislation. Desert Stonewall Democrats endorsed this
legislation early on in the process.
The End of Life Option Act allows terminally ill people in the last six months of their lives
to request life ending medications from their doctor in order to end their suffering and
not prolong the dying process. There are certain qualifications and restrictions for this to
happen. Who qualifies? Who does not? What is the process?
Our speaker is Paul Zak. Paul is an LGBT advocate, a social worker and educator. He is
now retired and does volunteer work for Desert Stonewall Democrats and the Five
Hearts Healing Arts Foundation. He has recently been trained by Compassion and
THAT IS FUNNY
Birthdays are kinda funny in a way that we get presents for basically not dying for a year.
I hate when doctors ask “how are you?”
I’m at the doctors office how the fuck do you think I am!
Don’t be that person who gets bitten by a zombie but keeps it a secret from the rest of your group.
My sisters friend brought brownies in cupcake wrappers to my house and I picked one up and turned it over
and noticed there were Oreos baked into the bottom so I gasped and said to my dad “THESE ARE NOT REGULAR
BROWNIES” and my dads eyes went so wide and he whispered “pot?”
Before you send someone an ugly message perhaps ex-foliate your skin, set some life goals and contemplate
why you’ve reached this point.
WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS
ARIES: March 20 - April 18: Bring on
the fun! The bold Sun ends a month
long run through Cancer and your
domestic fourth house.
TAURUS: April 19 - May 19: You’ve
been caught in a social whirlwind for
the past month, thanks to the Sun in
your gregarious third house. GEMINI:
May 20 - June 19: You’ve had a hardworking
start to summer, thanks to the
Sun’s month-long visit to Cancer, your
second house of work and finance.
CANCER: June 20 - July 21: Birthday
season winds down, as the Sun exits
Cancer and ventures into Leo for a
while, heating up your responsible and
productive second house. It’s time to
get back to work
LEO: July 22 - Aug. 21: It’s Leo time!
The radiant Sun—your ruler—fills you
with solar power, as it moves into your
sign until August 23. Start shopping
for that birthday outfit, and of course,
planning your blowout bash.
VIRGO: Aug. 22 - Sept. 21: Rolling
in the deep? You will be soon enough,
Virgo. The Sun plunges into Leo and
your mystical 12th house of subconscious
activity, turning you into quite
the introspective one.
LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 21: Long nights
at the office give way to extended
nights in ‘da club… and at the
after-party too. The Sun has spent a
month in your ambitious tenth house
and likely made you so goal-driven
SCORPIO: Oct. 22 - Nov. 20: Do the
words “world domination” mean anything
to you, Scorpio? Admit it, you’re
getting a little tingly right now. SAG-
ITTARIUS: Nov. 21 - Dec. 20: There’s
nothing a Sagittarius loves more than
a chance to pack a suitcase and explore
new vistas. Well, get the luggage, Archer,
because the Sun begins a monthlong
visit to Leo, your ninth house of
travel, adventure and learning
CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 18: No
more skimming the surface, Capricorn.
The Sun spends the next weeks
in Leo, your eighth house of intimacy,
research and joint ventures..
AQUARIUS: Jan. 19 - Feb. 17: You
answer to nobody, Aquarius—well,
most of the time. But between now
and August 23, the Sun is in Leo, your
seventh house of one-on-one relationships.
You might actually set aside that
“Aquarius knows best” schtick and
open up to some input.
PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19: Measure
once, cut twice. The Sun enters Leo
and your efficient sixth house until August
23, putting your daydreamy sign
in officious spirits. You can actually be
quite organized
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
So – what’s going on? Lot’s in the USA from
Hillary being cleared by the FBI (duh) over
the email mess & Donald praising Saddam
Hussein and Kim Jung Un (what an ass!
Donald not the other two – well yes…. All
three of them).
But let’s talk local. Cathedral City is poised
to include gender identity in its non-discrimination
ordinances and policies. This
comes after being the first in the County
to require same gender restrooms in all
public buildings with single stall toilets. We
have required all companies doing business
with the city to offer same benefits to LGB
employees as they would to non-gay staff –
now the “T” will be added.
Palm Springs this past week has joined
Cathedral City in passing a gender neutral
restroom ordinance and also in restricting
sales of guns. The difference in the gun laws
is that Cathedral City used zoning codes to
so restrictive as to where you can sell them –
the vendors have chosen to see CC as a good
market. In PS they are attempting outright
bans on some guns. We will see if the NRA
sues.
Also in Palm Springs was the bungled
attempt to restrict vacation rentals. First
the Mayor attempted to restrict the number
of people who could testify in a public meeting,
then pulled the agenda item entirely
when the building was standing room only
with Realtors and Convention Bureau types.
OOOPS! Watch for this to come back on
the agenda though. The entire issue pits
the economic engine of tourism with the
neighborhood councils and residents who
are complaining of loss of quality of life due
to traffic and noise.
The Council did pass new operating procedures
cutting back time of public comment.
Their hope is to move meetings faster so
staff (and themselves) are not there past
11pm. Kudos to Chris Mills for voting NO
and in favor of public dialogue.
Cathedral City is having its share of public
discourse. This time over the sale of “safe
and sane” fireworks. Some residents complain
of noise due to illegal fireworks that
they contend are encouraged because “safe
and sane” are allowed and those residents
that feel that fireworks are a God and apple
pie issue for the 4th of July. It is obvious the
Council will be discussing this for several
months to come.
And who said summer is a slow time in the
desert…………….
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral
City. He has made his name in governmental circles
as an expert in transportation issues and is very active
in working on bringing passenger rail service to the
COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay
elected city council members In Riverside County. He
has served on the boards of the National League of
Cities and the League of California Cities and as President
of the Southern CA Association of Governments.
