too great severity; but the Reformer himself, though conscious<br />

that <strong>in</strong> some respects they had erred, found <strong>in</strong> their discipl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

more to approve than to condemn.<br />

At school, where he was sent at an early age, Luther was<br />

treated with harshness and even violence. So great was the<br />

poverty of his parents, that upon go<strong>in</strong>g from home to school<br />

<strong>in</strong> another town he was for a time obliged to obta<strong>in</strong> his food<br />

<strong>by</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g from door to door, and he often suffered from<br />

hunger. The gloomy, superstitious ideas of religion then<br />

<br />

with a sorrowful heart, look<strong>in</strong>g forward with trembl<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

dark future, and <strong>in</strong> constant terror at the thought of God as<br />

a stern, unrelent<strong>in</strong>g judge, a cruel tyrant, rather than a k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

heavenly Father.<br />

Yet under so many and so great discouragements, Luther<br />

pressed resolutely forward toward the high standard of moral<br />

and <strong>in</strong>tellectual excellence which attracted his soul. He thirsted<br />

for knowledge, and the earnest and practical character of his<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d led him to desire the solid and useful rather than the<br />

his prospects brighter than <strong>in</strong> his earlier years. His parents<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>by</strong> thrift and <strong>in</strong>dustry acquired a competence, they were<br />

judicious friends had somewhat lessened the gloomy effects<br />

of his former tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. He applied himself to the study of the<br />

best authors, diligently treasur<strong>in</strong>g their most weighty thoughts,<br />

and mak<strong>in</strong>g the wisdom of the wise his own. Even under the<br />

harsh discipl<strong>in</strong>e of his former <strong>in</strong>structors, he had early given<br />

<br />

rapidly developed. A retentive memory, a lively imag<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

strong reason<strong>in</strong>g powers, and untir<strong>in</strong>g application, soon placed<br />

him <strong>in</strong> the foremost rank among his associates. Intellectual<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e ripened his understand<strong>in</strong>g, and aroused an activity<br />

of m<strong>in</strong>d and a keenness of perception that were prepar<strong>in</strong>g
