The priests, bent upon keep<strong>in</strong>g the popular fury at its<br />

height, circulated the most terrible accusations aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

Protestants. They were charged with plott<strong>in</strong>g to massacre<br />

the Catholics, to overthrow the government, and to murder<br />
