Nazareth Area Garden Club 14th Annual Flower<br />

<strong>and</strong> Garden Show<br />

<strong>The</strong> Nazareth Area Garden Club celebrated its 14th Flower <strong>and</strong> Garden Show<br />

at the Schoeneck Moravian Church Fellowship Hall this month. <strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>me this<br />

year was “Gardening…Dig it!”<br />

Members displayed more than 200 Houseplants <strong>and</strong> horticulture specimens,<br />

<strong>and</strong> 43 Floral Arrangements. All entries were judged by non-member experts<br />

in horticulture <strong>and</strong> floral arranging. In addition to individual categories, they<br />

awarded Best in Show to the entries deemed to be the best in their category,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sweepstakes Awards, for the most first places by an individual member, in<br />

each category.<br />

This year’s winners were:<br />

Arrangements: Best of Show, S<strong>and</strong>ee Rinehart, runner up Phoebe Cubberly<br />

Sweepstakes: a tie between S<strong>and</strong>ee Rinehart <strong>and</strong> Debbie DeSousa<br />

Horticulture: Best of Show, Evanne Maher, runner up S<strong>and</strong>ee Rinehart<br />

Sweepstakes: Evanne Maher<br />

Houseplants: Best of Show, Connie Sabatine, runner up Bob Sparrow<br />

Sweepstakes: A tie between Debbie DeSousa <strong>and</strong> Bob Sparrow<br />

Also, in the Floral Arrangement category, special trophies are awarded to Novice<br />

<strong>and</strong> Intermediate designers for one specific design. This year's awards went<br />

to Julie Anderson <strong>and</strong> Mimzy Schaller for their "Toadily Green" entries. Cathy<br />

Gordon <strong>and</strong> Carol Miller were runners up.<br />

This year we grew two Club Project plants, a Basil called “Purple Ruffles” <strong>and</strong><br />

a beautiful annual Lantana called “Camera.” <strong>The</strong> winner of both was Kathy<br />

Juran. Loretta Rhyder took second place for the Basil <strong>and</strong> Julie Anderson for<br />

the Lantana.<br />

<strong>The</strong> small window box category brought 18 entries. <strong>The</strong> Judges selected<br />

Mimzy Schaller for the blue ribbon <strong>and</strong> the Audience selected the same entry<br />

as their favorite. An additional special project was a 5" hanging terrarium called<br />

Dew Drops. <strong>The</strong> winner of that category was Phoebe Cubberly. Evanne Maher<br />

was runner up for both.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Nazareth Area Garden Club meets each month from March through<br />

November at the Dryl<strong>and</strong>s UCC Church at 4415 Newburg Rd., Nazareth at 7:00<br />

Bangor Slater Uniform Fund Drive<br />

<strong>The</strong> Bangor Area High School Marching B<strong>and</strong> uniforms, which are modeled after<br />

Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After<br />

years of normal wear <strong>and</strong> tear, the uniforms must be replaced. <strong>The</strong> new uniforms<br />

will continue to use the same style. <strong>The</strong> Slater B<strong>and</strong> Boosters have initiated a fund<br />

drive to support this effort. <strong>The</strong> Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or<br />

large, to this cause. <strong>The</strong> names of contributors will be acknowledged in concert<br />

programs during the <strong>2016</strong>-2017 school year. Names of contributors at higher<br />

levels will be memorialized on a plaque to be displayed in the theater wing of the<br />
