DRAFT NOTES
• Of Minnesota’s 123 total draft selections, 50 have played in the NHL and 45 have played in a regular-season Wild game.
• The Wild has selected a forward in the first round in 11 of its 17 drafts. Minnesota selected forward Luke Kunin with the 15th overall selection in
the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The Wild did not have a first round selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft for the only time in franchise history. Minnesota
selected defenseman Jonas Brodin with the 10th overall selection and center Zack Phillips with the 28th overall selection in the 2011 NHL Entry
Draft - the Wild’s sole year with two first-round draft picks.
• Thirteen Wild draft selections skated in a game for Minnesota during the 2015-16 season. Three Wild draft picks made their NHL debut in 2015-16:
Christoph Bertschy, Kurtis Gabriel and Gustav Olofsson.
• The Wild has selected 12 Minnesota natives in the NHL Entry Draft: Jack Sadek (Lakeville) in 2015, Avery Peterson (Grand Rapids) in 2013, John
Draeger and Louis Nanne (Edina) in 2012. Previous selections include: Mario Lucia (Wayzata, 2011), Nick Seeler (Eden Prairie, 2011), Nick Leddy
(Eden Prairie, 2009), Kyle Medvec (Apple Valley, 2006), Chris Hickey (St. Paul, 2006), A.J. Thelen (Savage, 2004), Michael Erickson (Elk River, 2002)
and Jake Riddle (Minneapolis, 2001).
• The 2002 NHL Entry Draft was the first draft in which the Wild selected a goaltender as Josh Harding (second round, 38th overall) and Barry Brust
(third round, 73rd overall) were chosen. Overall, Minnesota has selected 13 goalies in 17 drafts: Harding, Brust, Kopriva (2003), Khudobin (2004),
Westblom (2005), Hovinen (2006), Hackett (2009), Kuemper (2009), Gustafsson (2010), Michalek (2011), Belanger (2013), Kahkonen (2014) and
Stezka (2015).
• The 2015 NHL Entry Draft was the first and only time in franchise history Minnesota did not select a Canadian native, after selecting at least two
in each of its previous 15 drafts. The 2015 draft also saw the Wild select a Russian-born player (F Kirill Kaprizov) for the first time in 10 drafts.
• During the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Minnesota selected Dylan Labbe in the fourth round (107th overall) – he marked the 100th draft pick in franchise
history.
• The Wild made a franchise-high 12 total selections in the 2004 Entry Draft and a franchise-low four total selections in the 2008 Entry Draft and
2016 Entry Draft.
• Minnesota has made 16 trades on draft day, including only two drafts in which the Wild didn’t make any trades (2016 and 2012).
• The Minnesota Wild first participated in the NHL Expansion and NHL Entry Draft in Calgary on June 24-25, 2000.
• The Wild selected Marian Gaborik as its first-ever selection in the first round (third overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
• Gaborik is the highest Wild draft selection and Jean-Michel Bolduc is the lowest draft selection, taken 281st (ninth round) in the 2003 draft.
