MEDICAL <strong>TEAM</strong><br />

JOEL BOYD<br />

ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON<br />

Dr. Joel L. Boyd is in his 17th year with the Minnesota Wild as Orthopedic Surgeon. In addition to<br />

his role with the Wild, he also serves as a Physician at TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Bloomington.<br />

Dr. Boyd has also served as Team Physician for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and is a United<br />

States Olympic Team Physician. He worked as an Olympic Team Physician for the United States<br />

men’s and women’s hockey teams in Nagano, Japan in 1998 and as a National Team Physician<br />

with USA Hockey at World Championships in Switzerland, Sweden and Germany. Dr. Boyd previously<br />

held the role of Co-Medical Director for the International Hockey League’s (IHL) Minnesota<br />

Moose.<br />

He completed his undergraduate work and received a Master of Science degree from Bucknell<br />

University and graduated from temple university medical school. Dr. Boyd completed his orthopedic training at the Cleveland<br />

Clinic Foundation and his fellowship training at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.<br />

BRAD NELSON<br />

ASSISTANT <strong>TEAM</strong> ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON<br />

Dr. Brad Nelson is in his eighth year with the Minnesota Wild as Assistant Team Orthopedic Surgeon,<br />

specializing in shoulder and knee surgery. In addition to his duties with the Wild, he is the<br />

Medical Director for the University of Minnesota Athletic Department, is an Associate Professor<br />

of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, and also works at TRIA Orthopeadic Center<br />

in Bloomington.<br />

Dr. Nelson has worked as the Team Physician for multiple USA Hockey teams and tournaments,<br />

including the U.S. National Team Development Program and the Under-18 World Championship<br />

camp. Over the past six years, he has also worked as the Team Physician for numerous sports<br />

teams at the University of Minnesota, including the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs.<br />

A native of Appleton, Minn., Dr. Nelson graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and spent his residency at<br />

the University of Colorado. He went to the United States Military Academy for the West Point Sports Medicine Fellowship, where<br />

he was an Orthopedic Surgeon and Team Physician for the men’s hockey, football, basketball and baseball teams.<br />

Among other affiliations, Nelson is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and has written multiple<br />

research articles and book chapters.<br />
