MEDICAL TEAM
JOEL BOYD
ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
Dr. Joel L. Boyd is in his 17th year with the Minnesota Wild as Orthopedic Surgeon. In addition to
his role with the Wild, he also serves as a Physician at TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Bloomington.
Dr. Boyd has also served as Team Physician for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and is a United
States Olympic Team Physician. He worked as an Olympic Team Physician for the United States
men’s and women’s hockey teams in Nagano, Japan in 1998 and as a National Team Physician
with USA Hockey at World Championships in Switzerland, Sweden and Germany. Dr. Boyd previously
held the role of Co-Medical Director for the International Hockey League’s (IHL) Minnesota
Moose.
He completed his undergraduate work and received a Master of Science degree from Bucknell
University and graduated from temple university medical school. Dr. Boyd completed his orthopedic training at the Cleveland
Clinic Foundation and his fellowship training at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.
BRAD NELSON
ASSISTANT TEAM ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
Dr. Brad Nelson is in his eighth year with the Minnesota Wild as Assistant Team Orthopedic Surgeon,
specializing in shoulder and knee surgery. In addition to his duties with the Wild, he is the
Medical Director for the University of Minnesota Athletic Department, is an Associate Professor
of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, and also works at TRIA Orthopeadic Center
in Bloomington.
Dr. Nelson has worked as the Team Physician for multiple USA Hockey teams and tournaments,
including the U.S. National Team Development Program and the Under-18 World Championship
camp. Over the past six years, he has also worked as the Team Physician for numerous sports
teams at the University of Minnesota, including the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs.
A native of Appleton, Minn., Dr. Nelson graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and spent his residency at
the University of Colorado. He went to the United States Military Academy for the West Point Sports Medicine Fellowship, where
he was an Orthopedic Surgeon and Team Physician for the men’s hockey, football, basketball and baseball teams.
Among other affiliations, Nelson is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and has written multiple
research articles and book chapters.
