Two basic types of acoustic emission signals can be generated (Figure 16.1): • Continuous emission is “a qualitative description of the sustained signal level produced by rapidly occurring acoustic emission events.” These are generated by events such as plastic deformations in metals, which occur in a reasonably continuous manner. • Burst emission is “a qualitative description of the discrete signal related to an individual emission event occurring within the material,” such as that which may occur during crack growth or fracture in brittle materials. These burst signals are characteristic of the acoustic emission events resulting from the loading of cementitious materials. Charlie Chong/ Fion Zhang
