Disappointed Ros is awarded
20 penalties
Another local rider celebrating was Ros
Canter from Hallington in Lincolnshire
riding the 11 year-old brown gelding,
Allstar B, owned by Vale View-based
trainer, Caroline Moore. Ros made her
4-star debut at Burghley last year, but
improved on her previous placing of 37th
to finish this year in 2th spot. os ust
have thought she had jumped a clear, if
measured, cross-country round so was
dismayed to learn she had been given
a refusal for crossing her tracks at the
dairy mound complex. Ros said: “I took
a real ‘mix and match’ route – some fast
ways such as at the Trout Hatchery and
then slow routes at Discovery Valley and
the Dairy Mound. The course walked
easier than it rode.” With one of the very
few clear show jumping rounds, Ros
completed her second Burghley with 100.2
penalties.
Sarah Cohen and Treason make light work
of the cross-country
A tall order. Paul Sims is second to
go cross-country
Just one place behind Ros came Paul Sims
who is now based in Cheshire and shares a
yard with his fiance, event rider annah
Bate. Despite being only 29 years-old,
Paul is no stranger to either Burghley or
Badminton, having completed both events
on three occasions on the same horse,
14 year-old Glengarnock. Somewhat
dauntingly Paul was the second horse to
run across country and the first to ake
it home. So who could blame him for
setting off somewhat steadily, yet to his
credit to tackled virtually all the so far
untested direct routes. nfortunately his
luck ran out at the skinny triple bar, which
followed immediately after the massive
drop-off the leaf pit, which Glengarnock
glanced-off. This was followed on Sunday
with a further eight show jumping faults,
giving a final score of 10.
Just one further place lower in the order
was Wymeswold-based Mark Kyle riding
Jesmond Justice. Mark has ridden this
horse for the last two years, following
all his schooling and initial competing
having been done by Newtown Linfordbased
Ginny Turnbull. Fresh back from
competing at Rio, Mark is a familiar sight
at urghley but this was his ounts first
run at star level, nluckily for ark, the
pair of them were stopped and held part
way through their cross-country round
for over 15 minutes. As Mark explained:
“We had got into a lovely rhythm, so to
be held for such a length of time and then
when started again, the first fence was
the massive hanging log which my horse
was a bit sticky over, then he was spooky
at the following fence, the trout hatchery.
Add to this the fact he lost a front shoe so
found the ground slippy. So, all in all, I’m
delighted by how he performed.” However,
his jumping luck rather ran out on the last
day, as not only did the pair knock-down
six fences, but also acquired one time fault.
