Behind the Scenes At Parade by Lanean Hughes “Oh my gosh we don’t have a seat for Peter Porsche”, “No don’t give away the Pirelli tires, this is the Yokohama banquet!”, “What, we have no T-shirts for the Walk/Run?” “When did you send the napkins for the hospitality room?” “No more rooms for sleeping? But we thought you were handling that”. I now have joined the national ranks and serve on the Public Relations Committee along with Carter Dunkin of the St. Louis Region. He and I were basically overwhelmed with our new jobs, but we came through with just a few bruises, seats for everyone, meals for everyone, and rooms for everyone (of course, thanks to Connie Waltrip). It is certainly an eye opener to be on the other side, working diligently to make this Parade the best. My heartfelt thanks to the national staff, local staff, and all the others that work (and I mean WORK) to give the Porsche customer the best in entertainment, goodie store, food, rooms, etc. so they can have something wonderful to keep as a memory. It is the result of many hours of tireless effort from a group of individuals who work 2 to 3 years to give you the best Parade possible. I felt privileged to to be part of this great event, and even though no “trophy” came home with me, my trophies were in the wonderful friends both new and old, and the memories that will not tarnish. Concours on Lake Michigan by Ed Mayo So, what are the two most likely situations that could occur at a Parade Concours? How about rain and a busy protest committee? Well we had both! Luckily, the rain only fell during the early pre-dawn hours, but for a while it looked like the protests might go until the next day’s pre-dawn hours. The protests came from the 356 classes largely because they’re so perfect that the only trivia left to worry about is whether Hans (when the car was first built) put the screw slots vertical or horizontal. The concours site was a beautiful city park built on landfill jutting out into Lake Michigan. All the cars (race cars included) had to drive the two miles from the concours prep lot through downtown Milwaukee to the site. Since the concours was on Sunday, the streets were virtually deserted. I should have entered the Cockroach just for the opportunity to rip through downtown Milwaukee in a race car unmolested! Ah yes, the weather. To the Yankees, it was what they call summer. However, as I kept telling the locals while shivering in my windbreaker, “We call this winter!” Fortunately, it was very sunny – sunny enough to sunburn the top of my bald head. (I keep forgetting I have to wear hats now!) The turnout was very good; I believe about 150 cars were on the grass for judging. Participation has improved since the creation by the PCR (Parade Competition Rules) committee of Lake Michigan makes quite a backdrop for this Boxster. A very patriotic 911. 911’s all lined up for inspection. A variety of Porsches looking their best. Preservation and Restoration classes along with Touring categories. (In Touring, the underside of the car isn’t judged.) The intention was to bring more real cars out to be displayed; cars that are actually driven and used. Our own John Halla drove his 944 Turbo to Milwaukee, cleaned it, and entered the concours. I believe he took first place in his class. A lesser-seen Maverick member from Longview, Jim Valenti, also brought his car out and took first in his class. Placing in class aside, the important point here is that they both participated. That is the best way to enjoy Parades. I judged again this year in the early 911 Preservation Class. I’m enjoying this quite a bit, as it is not a dirt hunt. Presentation is still important, of course, but the cleanest car doesn’t necessarily win. Originality, mileage (higher is better), length of ownership, and whether you drove or trailered to Parade are all important criteria. This year’s winner was a 1967 911 with over 90,000 miles, original paint, driven to Milwaukee from Vermont, and owned by the entrant for 27 years. The more of this I do, the more I want to learn even more detail about how our favorite cars are built. I’m convinced factory workers spend lunch hours trying to figure different ways of assembling our cars because they know 30 years later we’ll be going crazy trying to understand and document what they did! 13
