Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor The 2004 driving season is just around the corner! If Santa didn’t already bring you new tires and brake pads, it’s time to put an order together. The Maverick Region’s annual driving schools are getting under-way very soon, we start in February with the TT104 advanced school, followed by AX101 and the Ladies AX School, then cap things off with AX102/TT103 in early March. Then don’t forget about our first Driver’s Education of the year at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, the date to get your application in the mail is January 8th. Now is the time to brush up on your skills and expand your driving prowess while having fun and hanging around with the other car nuts while talking about tires, sway bars, springs and shocks. One of the articles that you will find in this issue is a recap of the Founders Day Banquet. I didn’t have room last month to fit the complete list of the award recipients along and the final standings of our driving events. You will find those results along with a few more photos (many are duplicates – sorry, that’s all the photos I had) on pages 20 and 21. Maverick Minutes by Mimi Spreen Attendees: Matt Platts, Jan Mayo, Wendy & James Shoffit, Charlie & Teri Davis, Bob Knight, Lanean Hughes, Joe McGlohen, Mark Gluck, Dennis Chamberlain, Mike Brodigan, Michael Wingfield, Joel Nannis, Noby Takahashi, Cody Sears, Mimi & Carey Spreen, Keith & Karen Olcha. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm at the home of Keith & Karen Olcha on Tuesday, Dec 9, 2003. Keith started off the 'Round the Room as John Sandusky said an application was submitted to add another DE to the calendar. Mike Oakes doesn't have time to be the Webmaster anymore. Keith talk to some people who've expressed an interest to see if they are still interested and then will send out an email asking for volunteers, if necessary. Dennis - Happy Hour on 12/18 at The Elephant Bar in Addison. Has special parking for Porsches. Now printing posters so restaurants can advertise in advance. Keith has volunteered to take the posters to the Porsche dealers for them to post as well. Joe McGlohen - Flags and radios were rented out and received back with no problems. Suggests that earpieces for the radios may be worth the $25.00 per. Will submit a request to the board at a later date. Cody - needs to run ad for the Autocross schools. Teri - Tried a new concept at the last rally. It could be run as a rally or a tour. Worked out well and people enjoyed it. It lasted approximately 2 1/2 hours. May try some next year, but busy with Parade stuff. Rally clocks are being tested by Charlie to see if the battery is worth saving or should we buy new ones. Proposing we get rid of the old battery packs and get new ones. Will save what we can. Noby - no events requiring insurance in January. Mike Brodigan - Advertising going well. Lanean - Letter from Lisa, the administrator at Hope, thanking us for a great evening at Founder's Day. There was a stocking stuffer party held at Laneans on 12/7 (I was busy watching the Eagles destroy the Cowboys). Lots of stockings to take to the shelter. Kevin Procaccino from Mercedes Home is having flooring, carpeting, paint and tile delivered and his employees will be volunteering to come to the shelter and replace the old with the new. Lanean is requesting plaques for each dealer in appreciation for their help and support, the expenditure was approved. Charlie - truxter ok. Bob Knight - needs information on Mineral Wells dates and deposit information. Wendy - Slipstream delivered to Ussery on 11/21 and mailed on 12/4. Ussery now knows that it goes directly to the mail house, so the delivery date should be better from now on. She has a person in mind to replace Mike Oakes, but wants to wait and change everything all at the same time. Creating consistency is the goal. Need an experienced person. Jan - National Parade staff was here in Dallas for a Parade meeting and were pleased with answers and how much we've done. Another meeting scheduled for Jan 17 and then again on April 17. Matt - needs information for Jan. Slipstream. Holiday party pictures, minutes, etc. Has requested a new computer since the old one is 5 years old. Discussions have been taking place with the board and he's anxiously waiting to get the ok. Motion made to adjourn the meeting at 8:40, seconded and passed. 8
Photo by Dennis Chamberlain Happy Hour at The Abby Grill by Dennis Chamberlain The Abbey Grill was the scene of our first Happy Hour ever in Richardson, and we had a large turnout of 42 Mavericks, including quite a few faces that we haven’t seen in a long time. From my vantage point, it appeared that just about everybody was having a good time, with or without the loud music. Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck Eddie Black, who has a new 2003 Boxster, had just joined the club a few days before the happy hour. I’m not sure how he found out about the happy hour so quickly, but he ended up being the last one of our members to leave (except for me). New member Jim Deutschmann (2002 Boxster S) was also attending his first Maverick function, and teamed up with Mark Hanna and Mark Gluck for what I’m sure turned out to be more driving advice than he ever Mark Hanna & Tinker Edwards wanted to hear. The drive to Richardson isn’t pretty if you have to come through the High Five construction. But it was convenient for our Richardson and Plano people, so we’ll have to repeat it one of these days. For our January 15 Happy Hour, we’re finally returning to the place that seems to be the all time favorite - Nuevo Leon at Oak Lawn and Cedar Springs. Hope to see you there.
