Road Ramblings
by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President
The January issue of Road & Track magazine
arrived a week or so ago. If you haven’t seen
the issue- it’s a keeper. There is a several
page story about the 40
year history of the 911
as told by Paul Frere, a
full road test of the
GT3, a quick update on
the ’04 GT2, and a 6-page article on the
upcoming Carrera GT. Add in a couple
of Porsche advertisements for good luck
as well. I call it a keeper because I do
collect car magazines if the content
warrants. I have a couple of hundred
1965-to-current issues of magazines that
have special meaning for me. I’ve provided
a couple examples below, so you get my
meaning of a “keeper” issue. Besides the
articles, the advertisements in a thirtyyear-old
magazine are nostalgic, fun to
read, and there are a lot less than in
today’s ad-filled publications. It’s the old
time-capsule idea, I guess.
I search eBay, flea markets, and
garage sales for old issues of magazines.
Not only do I enjoy finding old
magazines of interest, but also I enjoy
reading Road & Track in particular. Half because of columnist
Peter Egan, but also because it is well balanced between road,
Porsches have graced the cover and headline articles of Road
& Track more than any other car manufacturer, and I’m not
complaining.
To change topics a bit, 2004 is
here and I hope you all had a great
holiday season. I wish you all the
happiest of New Years. This is the start
of my second term as President of
Maverick Region and once again I am
thrilled to help provide to you the
services that feed our Porsche
appetites. It’s the cars, the people, and
the camaraderie that make it worthwhile.
Those of you who did few or no
events last year, please take my advicecome
out and join us. It’s a blast. You
have the choice of socials, racetrack
driving, autocross and time-trial
competition, rallying, tours, driving
schools, and dinners. On top of all of
that, in 6 months, the national Porsche
gathering called Parade ’04 will take
place the week of July 4th in Fort Worth.
Now back to reading some old car rags…
...how he becomes restless, joyous,
tempted, insightful...
racing, and exotic cars, and has the editorials and articles of a
monthly periodical. They know we get our quick info from
Speed Channel and
Autoweek. I’ve subscribed
for 25 years
and this month’s
article by Peter Egan
is especially fitting. He
talks about how when
a car enthusiast has
money and garage
space from a recent
vehicle sale, he becomes
restless, joyous,
tempted, insightful,
but most of all,
driven to replace the
vehicle and fill the
space. I’ll admit I
suffer from the illness
at times. I’m betting
