Photos by Charlie Davis Photos by Charlie Davis Photo by Charllie Davis Fun After the Storm by Jeff Herrmann and Tannia Dobbins In spite of the recent storms and the eight inches of rain Mineral Wells received the day before, the weekend of Mar 30/Apr 1 was absolutely beautiful and many folks made the trip on good faith that MineralRing would be in shape for the events. Those who showed up were delighted with the wonderful weather (although Saturday morning was a little chilly and windy – imagine that) and a nice clean lot. Jim Hedderick (Boxster, #39), who made the trip from Houston, found the Mike is bundled up per the hotels warnings event worthy and fun. Even Mike Lockas (944, #31) still came out after the hotel called him to discourage his trip! Time Trial #1 The Time Trial configuration was laid out for course #1 which was nice because this was the one that the TT School students were familiar with. It is great having the confidence to take on something familiar … and something that we tackled just a few weeks before. In fact, the course was actually a little more fun since the right corner after start/finish had been opened up slightly making it easier to navigate the turn. Well Jeff, you didn’t HIT the cone, but is backwards the quicker way around it? The opening season for time trials saw the launching of a new timing program. All was off to a great start then some SNAFU’s appeared. Several cars were given reruns … well, I guess you could say they needed them after seeing run times about 30 seconds faster than their competitors. I know Bryan Bell (996, #204) told everyone at the driver’s meeting that he was going to get Rick Randall doing the Wave the fastest time of the day (because, as he exclaimed, “Richard Diller (911S, #550) is not here!”). Indeed he did with a 65.566, but we are still wondering what he put under the hood that day! Jake’s dad, Kevin (#122), driving a BMW M3, ended up having to take ten laps all at once but after eight had said “enough!” There is indeed something odd about being out there all by yourself going around and around... In fact, they were able to paint permanent markings for courses one, two, and three. Autocross #2 Charlie Davis devised a course that used almost every foot of the MineralRing. It was one of the longest courses seen in a great number of events. He was able to combine some technical turns while still making the course easy to follow. Very few people got lost on this 90-100 second course. Of course, what would a Charlie constructed course be without the theme names for each turn. With names like Propaganda, Chi Z, Chi Cane, Tunnel and Momentum, the court could not determine if the theme was Chinese (Chi = energy), Chicago (Chi short for Chicago) or Vietnam (Propaganda, Tunnel, and Momentum). Photos by Charie Davis Photos by Charie Davis It’s great to see Danny Nowak back out at Mineral Wells Wendy Shoffit (911, #11) being the trooper that she always is, worked setup, registration etc. and didn’t have time to walk the course. This was apparent during her first run when she scared us all to death by trying to reconfigure the course on the fly! She got over it right way and came back to take the fastest time of the day among the ladies with a 98.618. Just a Couple Technical Problems What would any weekend be without a few technical car problems? It seems that Rick Randall (Targa, #161) wanted to participate so much that he drove all the way there on corded tires … raced the morning time trials, then figured he had better leave a little rubber on the tires to get home in one piece so he headed out at lunch time. Needless to say, we missed his lively radio etiquette calling in each car status at start/finish. Clay flies by the cone, prior to the Chi Cane As for dinner, there was a good turnout at Baris’ (we got to sit in the back room). The only scary event of the evening was when Nancy decided she was ready to help Mike Lockas (944, #31) expand his talents. Mike received “on the fly” training on how to work the cash register and really enjoyed taking everyone’s money that night. Tannia Dobbins (Boxster, #77) who wasn’t sure Mike really know what he doing with everyone’s credit cards opted to pay cash just to be on the safe side. Maybe it was because she heard Mike say “Now…how do I run those credit cards through again?” Danny Nowak (914, #306), back this year after a long hiatus, was having some excellent runs when the shifting linkage gave out. He really wanted to stay for the autocross on Sunday but couldn’t Jason Rogers shows Jeff the right way to go around a cone figure out how to run the course without first and second gear. Nonetheless, he and Nan enjoyed Baris’ and a relaxing evening with the dinner group. Clay Perrine (914, #24) was having a great weekend until something went awry with his car at corner four of the autocross course. It seems that he went into the Chi Cane box and never came back out. I’m not sure that this was what Charlie had in mind when he designed it! One last note: For all of you that didn’t hear the news, Tracey Gross (Boxster, #284) was planning on attending but broke her wrist the week before. So to Tracey: GET WELL SOON. We missed you this weekend!! Photos by Charie Davis Chuck McCoy (944, #44) had a scare on the TT course at corner 3 (caught on camera by Charlie Davis) – which was probably not the corner where you wanted your brakes to fail. Well, actually, it was just one brake pad, but Chuck had to forego the rest of the afternoon session until he could make evening repairs. All turned out well since Chuck was able to step in and work start/finish when Rick departed. Who can forget the story Christy Dominick (944, #199) and Denny Payne (944, #991) had about their 944 not starting? It seems that Christy may have a potential career in auto mechanics since she knew that a screwdriver squeezed in the right place can help free up a stuck injector every time! Both Christy and Denny missed the time trials but they made sure they were at Baris’ for dinner that night. Grab the flag, Bryan... not Connor Photos by Charie Davis 17
