It’s <strong>September</strong> and the heat... is not<br />

quite as hot!<br />

PLEASE READ: In this issue are the<br />

results and feedback from our Maverick<br />

Region survey. Madhu, our club secretary,<br />

did a fabulous job of creating,<br />

implementing and reporting the survey.<br />

Speaking of results, we had some terrific performances<br />

at August’s Porsche Parade in Savannah:<br />

Concours d’Elegance - Ed Mayo 2nd Place, Performance<br />

Group, Division SMI - Street Modified Division, Full<br />

TSD Rally - Fran and Carl Ussery 1st Place, Unequipped<br />

(69 total competitors!) Myra and Jerry Sutton 7th Place,<br />

Navigational<br />

Autocross - Travis Howard - 1st (by a half second) in the<br />

986 Boxster class against seven other competitors. Robyn<br />

Howard - 1st (by 2.2 seconds) in the 986 Boxster class<br />

against two other competitors. Fran Ussery - 2nd in the 986<br />

Boxster S class against three other competitors. Jerry Sutton<br />

was 4th out of five in the Cayenne class. Myra Sutton<br />

was 2nd out of three in the Cayenne class. Ed Mayo (on<br />

400 treadwear street tires on his concours car) got 3rd out<br />

of three - the other car in his class was a two-driver 914-6.<br />

James Shoffit - 1st (by .5 seconds) in<br />

the I04 class (5th fastest time overall)<br />

- fastest run was his first :) Wendy<br />

Shoffit - 1st (by 4.2 seconds) in the<br />

I04L class and Ladies Top Time of<br />

Well it’s back to busy with all the<br />

events we’ve got scheduled for <strong>September</strong><br />

(see page 1). If you’re looking<br />

for a good, fun way to get introduced<br />

to our Drivers’ Education (DE) program, join us on the <strong>September</strong><br />

25th Sunday Drive which will end up at Motorsport<br />

Ranch in Cresson with one of our DE’s going on. You’ll<br />

also get to drive your car (low speed) on the track to experience<br />

the thrill and a little classroom time.<br />

Parade, it’s a wonderful thing! For<br />

all of you out there that have attended,<br />

you know what I’m talking<br />

about. For those of you who still are confused<br />

about all the hype, read through<br />

this month’s issue and you’ll see what<br />

I’m talking about. To be honest, I have<br />

only been able to enjoy the Maverick<br />

hosted 2004 Ft. Worth Parade, but next year’s looks to be<br />

taking advantage of another one of America’s beautiful<br />

locations, Salt Lake City, Utah. As PCA members, we are so<br />

fortunate to be associated with an organization that puts<br />

100% into everything they do. I hope you put everything<br />

you can into it as well. I’ll have more of this year’s Savannah<br />

Parade to share next month, so if you went and have<br />

an experience to share, send it to me, editor@mavpca.org.<br />

Finally, I want to thank everyone of you that has ever<br />

contributed to <strong>Slipstream</strong>, because without your continued<br />

help and support, it wouldn’t be what it is today.<br />

Today, for the third time ever in our almost fifty years,<br />

Our August <strong>2011</strong> board meeting<br />

started at 7pm with a review of<br />

the recent Porsche Parade event in<br />

Savannah, GA. John Hamilton reviewed<br />

the successes of the region which include<br />

several first place awards for driving events<br />

as well as, (cue the trumpets, please), a first<br />

place finish for <strong>Slipstream</strong>! As the results<br />

were announced, we began to drum the refrain “We will rock<br />

you… We are the champions.” Have you ever had that kind of<br />

fun at a board meeting? Well then, why not join us at a future<br />

board meeting?<br />

John opened the meeting with a simple comment, to let the<br />

Maverick Region know that “we hear them.” To this point, the<br />

recent Maverick Region survey highlighted the need to optimize<br />

our communications with you. To achieve this, John will<br />

be sending out a monthly summary of events via email. As a<br />

follow up to the July meeting John asked everyone to forecast<br />

their anticipated expenses and utilize a ‘revenue favorable’ budget<br />

mindset going forward. At the meeting committee chairs<br />

discussed how they could achieve this objective in their report<br />

outs.<br />

Madhu Rao, (yours truly) reviewed the recent Maverick Region<br />

survey. The results and number of responses were extremely<br />

encouraging. Thank you for your feedback. This will<br />

help all of us plan more expediently for the future. Additional<br />

survey information is contained in an article in this edition of<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong>.<br />

After presenting the survey data, Madhu reviewed the timeline<br />

associated with the Maverick Region 2012 election. Maverick<br />

Region members interested in an executive council office may<br />

contact Brendan Eagan, John Harvey or Carey Spreen at nomination@mavpca.org.<br />

Brendan noted that the Vice-President<br />

position for 2012 is currently open. The next issue of <strong>Slipstream</strong><br />

will contain the ballot of candidates and instructions for<br />

voting. Results will be announced at Founders Day on November<br />

12, <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Fresh from his victory lap, Richard Bradley was smiling from<br />

ear to ear. He mentioned that it has been helpful to have an intern,<br />

Amanda, assist with the copy and layout of <strong>Slipstream</strong>. He<br />

also reminded each committee chair to submit their articles and<br />

photos to him before the 17th of the month. If you are reading<br />

this next month, you’ll know I was compliant!<br />

Jim Falgout noted that our fiscal position continues to improve.<br />

He reviewed our cash position and discussed our future<br />

expenses and revenue from upcoming events.<br />

The team of Carey Spreen, Brendan Eagan, and John Harvey<br />

described their plans for upcoming Sunday Tours and Rallies.<br />

It appears that members of the region really enjoy these events<br />

as evidenced by your recent survey feedback.<br />

Carey described a Bring Your Own Porsche (BYOP) Rally<br />

event scheduled to be held on October 23 in conjunction with<br />

the Sunday Drive to San Martino Vineyards. Oops, did I just<br />

disclose the final destination of this Rally event? Judging from<br />

the success of the May Sunday Drive mark your calendars to<br />

join your fellow Mavericks on this date. You can always watch<br />

the Cowboys game later…<br />

Brendan and John reviewed the historical success of Sunday<br />

Drives and shared some concept ideas to incorporate these<br />

events with other Maverick Region events. Brendan noted that<br />

tour maps for Garmin GPS units are available on the Maverick<br />

website. If you have a question or a different brand GPS unit<br />

(e.g., Magellan, Tom Tom) please contact tours@mavpca.org<br />

for additional information.<br />

John reviewed the upcoming Boxstoberfest event in Fredericksburg,<br />

TX, <strong>September</strong> 9-11, <strong>2011</strong>. The event is open to all<br />

Porsches. John also described the next Sunday drive on <strong>September</strong><br />

25 which includes a brief visit to Motorsport Ranch.<br />

Pat Friend noted that advertising placements are healthy and<br />

discussed some advertising ideas for our 50th anniversary celebration.<br />

James Shoffit also reviewed the recent Parade event in Savannah,<br />

GA, and next year’s event in Salt Lake City, July 8 –14,<br />

2012. (Note to self – post the event on the refrigerator at home).<br />

James also reviewed our current Facebook page and opportunities<br />

to update/integrate this into our regional communications<br />

plan. Based on feedback from the survey we know this is important<br />

for several Maverick Region members.<br />

Wendy Shoffit updated us about how other regions are communicating<br />

with their membership (e.g., websites, newsletters,<br />

etc.). She noted that an opportunity may exist to create videos<br />

of our various events (e.g., Autocross, Drivers’ Education, etc.)<br />

to provide an overview of these for region members. She also<br />

reminded us that Maverick Regional directories are available<br />

for $5 at www.clubregistration.net.<br />

John Hamilton presented a report on behalf of Christy Payne<br />

and the Social Committee. The <strong>2011</strong> Founders’ Day event<br />

will be held on Saturday, November 12, at the Hilton Hotel in<br />

Southlake, TX. Please join us at this fun event! John also described<br />

the upcoming Holiday Party and All Member’s Party.<br />

Additional information will be posted on the Maverick Region<br />

website about these two events.<br />

Lisa Steele announced that in July we gained 27 new and<br />

transferred members, thus growing our total membership to<br />

1984 total members (1188 primary & 796 affiliate). The process<br />

outlined by the membership committee to contact new and<br />

existing members is resulting higher new and renewal memberships.<br />

Lisa is also seeking your photos from recent or past<br />

Maverick Region events. Find your four best photos and send<br />

them to Lisa at membership@mavpca.org.<br />

Linda Bambina described the process to develop an anniversary<br />

logo for the 50th Maverick Region celebration. She also<br />

presented an idea to create awareness for the Hope Shelter at<br />

various Maverick Region events. For additional information<br />

about how you can help the Hope Shelter, please contact Chris<br />

Hamilton at cheerin104@hotmail.com.<br />

Mike Brodigan described the upcoming Drivers’ Education<br />

events <strong>September</strong> 24-25. Early registration is strong with 50 registrations.<br />

Mike described the value of Maverick Region events<br />

as they offer a significant amount of instructor time. Building<br />

on this theme Mike described a concept idea of ‘Texas 2-Step’<br />

event. This could include a mini Drivers’ Education event in<br />

conjunction with a Driving Tour or AX/TT event. I have seen<br />

Mike and his wife Judy dance the polka so when he starts talking<br />

about “two-stepping” get ready for something special!<br />

Fresh from their victory laps at Parade, Travis and Robyn<br />

Howard described the AX/TT events on <strong>September</strong> 10-11. Travis<br />

discussed the value of Maverick Region driving events as<br />

these include up to 10 runs per session. That is great value for<br />

the total cost! Travis discussed the opportunity to return to Pennington<br />

Field in Bedford for AX/TT events in 2012.<br />

Robyn mentioned our upcoming Club Race on October 29-<br />

30. Robyn, Travis, and Mike stressed the need for safety at all<br />

driving events including recruiting and fairly compensating the<br />

corner workers at such events.<br />

Our guests attending this meeting were Bob Lewis, Mike<br />

Picolla and Jason Trent. Bob Lewis has been a longstanding<br />

contributor to the success of this region in various roles. Mike<br />

provided some very relevant insights about Maverick Region<br />

events from a member perspective. Jason drives a 2007 Cayman<br />

and attended the June Happy Hour at Ruggeri’s. He enjoyed<br />

the event and described his interest to help out the Maverick<br />

Region. If you have an interest to help out the region please let<br />

any Board member know your interests and we’ll take it from<br />

there.<br />

Parade TSD Rally<br />

I’ll start by saying that I’m married<br />

to the infamous Billy Bob Evil, rally<br />

master for both the DFW ’87 Parade,<br />

and Oklahoma ’96 Parade. He<br />

evaluates EVERYTHING, and takes<br />

this pretty seriously. I’ll continue by<br />

saying that I Rally when arm-twisted<br />

and I’m not very serious. This time,<br />

I did the arm-twisting, and after much discussion,<br />

we decided to Rally, Carl the driver and myself the<br />

navigator. Now our goal was to finish without tears,<br />

without yelling, and still married!<br />

Carl attended the Parade Rally class, and came out<br />

with great notes and a grocery list of items we needed,<br />

including sticky notes. He made three sticky notes<br />

that we put on the steering wheel, the passenger<br />

window and the radio – “Have Fun.” Those silly little<br />

notes and the message, that this was a fun thing to<br />

do, actually worked! We laughed about the odometer<br />

magically changing to kilometers (we had to read the<br />

manual to go back to miles), and Carl’s inventive math<br />

skills to recover from our “pause” error.<br />

It worked so well, that we actually won the unequipped<br />

class! How did that happen? The Rally Master<br />

used tricks that were not punitive, his instructions<br />

were clear and fair, with signs that could be seen at<br />

Rally speeds, we paid attention to CAST speed changes<br />

and WE HAD FUN. The area around Savannah is<br />

beautiful with lovely little towns and waterways. We<br />

discovered the key to having a great Rally experience<br />

is to enjoy the moment, enjoy the scenery and enjoy<br />

each other – just HAVE FUN.<br />

Who Are We?<br />

After completing our initial review of<br />

the <strong>2011</strong> Maverick Region survey<br />

it is very obvious that those who responded<br />

(you) are very passionate about the<br />

region, its success, and are willing to share<br />

feedback. As we approach Maverick Region’s<br />

50th year of existence this is a great foundation<br />

to build our future on. Listed below is a<br />

brief overview of survey responses.<br />

Rationale - In 2009 I bought my first 911 (mid-life crisis<br />

Red) and became a member of the Maverick Region through<br />

PCA membership. In 2010, I was fortunate to join the executive<br />

council as your secretary. At our board meetings this year<br />

we began to discuss the need for a membership survey to better<br />

understand the current situation and future expectations of the<br />

Maverick Region.<br />

Methodology - On July 6, <strong>2011</strong>, John Hamilton, our Maverick<br />

Region President, sent out an email to all primary members<br />

containing a link to an electronic survey. An overview follows:<br />

Survey Overview - Surveyed Members 1200, Completed<br />

Surveys 190, Response Rate 15.83%, Number of questions 18,<br />

Survey completion time 5’30”.<br />

1. The response rate is extremely encouraging in light of the<br />

many competing priorities we all face.<br />

2. The survey completion time reflects the fact that many questions<br />

allowed respondents to submit additional comments. For<br />

example in question 15 nearly 50% of respondents provided<br />

feedback.<br />

3. Throughout the survey the number of completed responses<br />

was very high.<br />

Current Situation - Here are some selected highlights from<br />

the survey. The responses help illustrate our current situation.<br />

1. 30% of respondents purchased their first Porsche in the past<br />

three years. 25% purchased their Porsche between four and nine<br />

years ago. 45% purchased their first Porsche over ten years ago.<br />

2. Nearly 50% of respondents joined the region in the past three<br />

years.<br />

3. Respondents connoted a high level of satisfaction in regional<br />

membership, recommending the region to others, and event activities.<br />

4. 33% of respondents are members of another car club. The<br />

region compares very favorably to other car clubs in terms of<br />

satisfaction, friendliness, communication, and value.<br />

5. A majority of respondents participate in Drivers’ Education<br />

and Sunday Drives. These were the most favorite events as well.<br />

6. Location preferences for events include: 1st choice = Dallas,<br />

2nd choice = Plano, 3rd choice = Grapevine, 4th choice = Las<br />

Colinas. Total mentions (1st to 4th place) include: 1st= Grapevine<br />

71%, 2nd = Dallas 65%, 3rd = Las Colinas and 4th = Plano.<br />

7. Quality of communications, <strong>Slipstream</strong> awareness and quality<br />

were all very high.<br />

8. Nearly 60% of respondents are aware of the Maverick Region<br />

50th Anniversary in 2012.<br />

9. Top three most common Porsches owned: 911(all): 75%,<br />

Boxster (all): 26%, and 944 (all): 22%.<br />

Suggestions/General comments<br />

Communications • 76% of respondents prefer email updates<br />

about upcoming events or noteworthy activities.<br />

• 40% suggested a Facebook site and event updates:<br />

• Communicate events as early as possible either<br />

through <strong>Slipstream</strong>, website, email, Facebook.<br />

• Reminder preference: 1st email, 2nd <strong>Slipstream</strong>, 3rd<br />

Facebook.<br />

General • Better timing of events listed in <strong>Slipstream</strong>.<br />

• Afraid to demonstrate my ignorance of car, driving, trivia,<br />

Porsche history, etc.<br />

• Events are fun, sometimes cliquish, but people are very nice<br />

and helpful.<br />

• Increase number of driving events and locations for Autocross.<br />

• Increase types of combined driving or specialty events (e.g.,<br />

young driver’s day, Ladies day, Brand new to driving a Porsche<br />

day).<br />

• Reach out to new members more.<br />

• Increase number of tech sessions or video these for future<br />

reference.<br />

• Increase awareness of driving events (e.g., describe club racing,<br />

autocross, etc.).<br />

• Eliminate competition between events.<br />

• Involve family if possible.<br />

Conclusion<br />

Respondents from the Maverick Region really enjoy their<br />

membership and would recommend the region to others. Satisfaction<br />

is very high. Opportunities include more timely communications,<br />

event reminders, and greater opportunities for<br />

camaraderie and information exchange between members.<br />

Cliff’s Ramblings<br />

I<br />

suddenly remembered something<br />

from the past tonight and was dwelling<br />

on it.<br />

It has been so hot lately - 100-109 temperatures<br />

daily. I found myself fondly<br />

remembering working in a no AC shop<br />

in Boulder, Colorado. We rarely suffered<br />

from severe heat in the dead of summer.<br />

A 90 degree day there seemed harsh. The winters could<br />

be brutal outside, yet we had sufficient heating, so it was<br />

not a big deal inside the workshop.<br />

How we P Techs dealt with the weather is what I am remembering<br />

fondly right now.<br />

The first snow in the fall always produced monumental<br />

snow ball fights amongst us. We wanted to be first to<br />

drive a Porsche in with about three to seven inches of<br />

snow built up on it so you could hit somebody with the<br />

first-lobbed three- to four-incher that’s well packed after a<br />

carefully planned attack. This will incite carefully planned<br />

counter attacks as well as major offensives for the rest of<br />

the day. It was not unusual for managers to get involved<br />

and then be on the list of “High priority targets” for us.<br />

We were first and foremost a family and knew how to<br />

have fun at work while being productive, much like the<br />

terrain I am currently deployed in. I feel so lucky to do<br />

what I have been doing.<br />

Anyway, when an environment like this exists it is only<br />

a matter of time until something unfortunate happens.<br />

One day, a tow truck pulled inside to drop off a 911. The<br />

weather outside was awful. The 911 had a dead battery<br />

and engine temperature was about 15F. There was no way<br />

to jump start it without extreme measures. The pavement<br />

outside was so slick and cold that it would have taken<br />

every breathing soul in the dealer to push the car up the<br />

mild incline into the shop.<br />

The tow truck backed it in. There was about ten inches<br />

of snow on the car. A tech who had harassed me earlier in<br />

the day with multiple well placed ninja strikes was in front<br />

of the tow truck and had begun peppering me with shots<br />

as I was directing the tow driver. I gathered up a large,<br />

well packed, retaliation shot.<br />

I lobbed it over the 911 and tow truck in his direction<br />

as he bent down to gather more ammunition from the<br />

truck’s front bumper. He stood up, looked up, and boom,<br />

my incoming ordnance landed directly in his wide open<br />

right eye. Off he went to ER.<br />

Mind you, this kid was a hockey player from Minnesota.<br />

He had a huge scar on his cheek from a high stick incident.<br />

Jeeezzee It’s Hot Outside Lately<br />

He just indicated snow that had fallen into his eye and it was<br />

most unfortunate. I do not remember the story he gave now,<br />

as it was near 30 years ago. When he came back to work,<br />

his eye was red as a beet and swollen up like a tomato. We<br />

hugged each other and laughed like crazy.<br />

With the rolling landscape and park benches<br />

what Porsche Cars North America intends<br />

with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock—located<br />

amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway<br />

Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV,<br />

October 14-16. This area, located behind the media<br />

center (where the tire companies usually set up for<br />

a race weekend), will feature an authentic German<br />

biergarten as well as German food and and a park<br />

atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break<br />

from the on-track activity and absorb the experience.<br />

But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a<br />

Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have<br />

plenty of sports car activity as well, according to<br />

Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications<br />

Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport.<br />

“Besides the food and drink, our Park-in-the-Paddock<br />

will include a center stage where driver introductions<br />

and all the autograph sessions will take place and<br />

live music will be played, as well as the very popular<br />

model car display, photo opportunities with the CARS<br />

movie star Sally Carrera—maybe our most famous<br />

911—and a Porsche Sport Driving School activity center,”<br />

said Harling.<br />

“We also hope to have a sneak showing of a future<br />

Porsche model in the Park, but it’s a little too early to<br />

be able to confirm its appearance,” Harling teased.<br />

Other activities around the paddock are taking<br />

shape as well for the October event. “Porsche Motorsports<br />

North America, headquartered in Santa Ana,<br />

will have a display not only to show its modern and<br />

vintage race car parts and service capabilities, but<br />

to encourage the many Porsche race car owners to<br />

take advantage of the company’s free technical advice<br />

offered to anyone who asks,” said Harling.<br />

With the Porsche 911 being the featured race car<br />

of Rennsport IV, fans will also be able to view two 911<br />

displays which help capture the history of this iconic<br />

sports car. The first is a special collection of the most<br />

significant 15 race cars in 911 history. The other 911<br />

display is being assembled by the Porsche Club of<br />

America, and proved to be very popular at Porsche<br />

Rennsport III at Daytona in 2007. In order to show<br />

the progression of the Porsche 911 model, the club<br />

has assembled 40 examples representing significant<br />

models across time.<br />

PCA will assist Rennsport Reunion IV with several<br />

activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display,<br />

Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade<br />

laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership<br />

Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup<br />

for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA<br />

race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist<br />

with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport<br />

Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company<br />

comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that<br />

exciting contest.<br />

The assembly of exceptional examples of 911<br />

production models for the History of the Porsche 911<br />

Display is well underway, representing the 911 model<br />

The Cover that Never Was...<br />

Sshhhh...it’s a secret! Don’t let him know...<br />

We all love surprises and the Savannah Parade had<br />

more than a few. But, at least for me, one surprise was<br />

special. It started about a week before Parade when I got an<br />

e-mail from Linda Bambina...she was forwarding a query<br />

from Lynn Turner-Kessler for pictures of her father at work at<br />

Parades. The “at work” part is unnecessary, because it<br />

seems like Leonard is always taking pictures! Anyone who<br />

has looked at Porsche Panorama has seen his talent...go to<br />

Parade and you’ll see how much effort and dedication is<br />

required. Lynn wanted pictures for some kind of tribute to<br />

Leonard...I sent her a bunch. My security clearance is not<br />

high enough to ask about the details, so I didn’t.<br />

A little history...<br />

I met Leonard in 1971 at the Sun Valley Parade (that was<br />

my first). He was an engine judge in the Concours...I have<br />

a prized picture of him at work. An interesting factoid: That<br />

was the only time Leonard was a Concours judge. He holds<br />

the record for the longest tenure as Zone 3 Representative...20<br />

years! Note that during those years, Zone 3 included<br />

Leonard and I<br />

have been friends<br />

for many years...not<br />

only because of the<br />

Porsche connection,<br />

but also because of the<br />

Nikon connection. We<br />

both carry Nikon gear<br />

around and like to take pictures. I remember an incident at<br />

the first San Diego Parade in 1977...Porsche AG introduced<br />

the 928...it was located on stands in the middle of a big pool<br />

(to keep people away)...it was illuminated with spotlights<br />

(it was nighttime), but they were not very bright. Leonard<br />

wanted to take a picture and use a long exposure time, but<br />

he had not brought his tripod. He borrowed mine. Friends.<br />

When I got to Savannah, Lynn whispered in my ear: Leonard<br />

was going to get the Sholar Award. She had a “special”<br />

video/slide show to accompany his recognition. She asked<br />

that I take pictures of Leonard during the video and afterwards.<br />

I was, of course, thrilled to do this!<br />

Lynn apparently had made similar requests of other photographers,<br />

because as the moment drew near, I noticed that<br />

I was not the only one heading for Leonard or the stage. I<br />

crouched in the isle to Leonard’s left. He’s used to me taking<br />

pictures of him (he hates it!...we often compete to see who<br />

can surprise the other with a photo ambush)...I think he at<br />

first just thought I was being a pest and ignored me. I took a<br />

couple of pictures to reinforce the idea that my drawing near<br />

was nothing other than one of his friends being invasive...I<br />

didn’t want him to figure out what was happening until later!<br />

It worked. Lynn and Betty Jo had put together a wonderful<br />

video production and I was subsequently able to get some<br />

very nice pictures. I liked one so much that I asked Betty Jo<br />

to break the “rule” prohibiting having people on the cover<br />

of Panorama...that was not to be. Leonard is in charge of<br />

selecting/processing Panorama covers and wanted no part<br />

of putting himself there! I still think it’s a good picture of<br />

Leonard enjoying his “moment”...one that he very much<br />

deserved. I printed it up and sent one to the Turners, just for<br />

their enjoyment. I titled it “The cover that never was...” and<br />

now you get to enjoy it too...<br />

Leonard may be too modest to do this, but I’m not! After<br />

all...what are friends for if not to publicly humiliate each<br />

other?

Member Spotlight: Ashish & Reina Patel<br />

This month’s new member spotlight<br />

is on Ashish and Reina Patel. Ashish<br />

and Reina own a 2008 911 Carrera<br />

(997). They have had the car about<br />

two and a half years. Ashish shared that<br />

he had a LeBaron convertible when he was<br />

16, then an Isuzu Rodeo in college. However,<br />

he says, he got serious in grad school<br />

with a 1998 E36 BMW M3. He loved that car but lost it to<br />

an accident in 2008. After that, he bought his first Porsche.<br />

He said his favorite part of his car is the retro red tail lights.<br />

He added, “I love the throwback to the Porsche heritage.”<br />

He also shared, “The love for Porsches runs in my family.<br />

My uncle has a beautiful cherry red 911 from the early<br />

1980s. He loved it so much; he named his daughter Portia<br />

so he could say he had two!”<br />

Although Ashish was born in Mumbai, he’s grown up in<br />

Texas - almost all of his life in College Station. (Gig ‘em<br />

Aggies!!) He met his beautiful wife Reina in 2003 while in<br />

residency in Temple. They were married in 2006. They also<br />

moved to Dallas in 2006 for his fellowship and he has stayed<br />

on at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. They live in the<br />

Lakewood area - which they love. He also loves basketball<br />

and is a huge San Antonio Spurs fan. They<br />

enjoy traveling all over the world and are<br />

always looking for their next adventure.<br />

Happy Hour - Mac’s Steak & Seafood<br />

Despite the hot temperature and vacation<br />

season, we had another excellent turnout<br />

of Mavericks at the August Happy<br />

Hour. About 44 Mavs gathered at Mac’s Steaks<br />

and Seafood restaurant on Highway 121 in Colleyville.<br />

Early arrivals socialized in the bar and<br />

then moved to the dining area as more people<br />

arrived. Those who attended Parade this year had stories to tell<br />

about their experiences en route and at Parade.<br />

As Happy Hour regulars know, this event is one of the best for<br />

new (and not so new) members to get to meet and talk with<br />

other members. Among new and relatively new attendees<br />

this month were Pat Patel with his <strong>2011</strong> Boxster, also Debbie<br />

and Randy Leal with his and hers Porsches - his: 2005 Turbo S,<br />

and hers: 2002 C4 - and their guest Lee. Another new attendee<br />

was Dave Nelson driving his <strong>2011</strong> Turbo S. Some longer-term<br />

Mavericks who were present this month included Carey<br />

Spreen of Rallymaster fame who said this was his first Happy<br />

Hour in years, also Frank and Lois Olson (2003 Boxster) who<br />

are 13 year members but this was only their 2nd Happy Hour,<br />

Bobby and Mimi Norbin, Frankie Andrew, Denny and Christy<br />

Payne, Alan Lage, Clarence Wyatt, Gordie and Sylvia Cohen,<br />

and Myra and Jerry Sutton. Myra and Jerry were among Mavs<br />

who brought home numerous awards from Parade this year.<br />

We also had prospective member Glen Weber who currently<br />

drives an E550 Mercedes, but was lured to Happy Hour by<br />

John Hamilton who is in the process of interesting him in converting<br />

to Porsche – way to go John! Happy Hour should be a<br />

great way to convince prospects to sign on to the world’s best<br />

marque!<br />

In addition to socializing, everyone enjoyed Mac’s varied<br />

dinner menu, including bottomless salad, the large variety of<br />

draft beers and wines, and the convivial atmosphere.<br />

Next month’s Happy Hour will be Thursday, <strong>September</strong> 15, at<br />

Trinity Hall Pub, 5321 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX (214-887-<br />

To Savannah & Back - Parade <strong>2011</strong><br />

This was the year. I’ve listened to<br />

the regular Parade goers for eight<br />

years now about how much fun<br />

and great friendship they have made at<br />

Parade. No excuse this year of it’s too far<br />

away or I don’t have enough vacation,<br />

we were going to Parade. Something the<br />

regulars said I did abide by was, don’t<br />

try to do everything. There is too much<br />

to do and you will need your down time.<br />

This is a vacation.<br />

The first priority was to decide which<br />

of the four competitions that makes up<br />

Parade, Concours, Rally, Autocross, and<br />

Tech Quiz, we wanted to participate in.<br />

Well, the Concours was out, between<br />

Robyn and myself our Porsches are<br />

either daily drivers or track cars. Not<br />

a garage queen in the bunch. I thought<br />

about doing the Rally, but on the drive to<br />

Savannah we had already spent fourteen<br />

hours in a car together. I figured it was<br />

best not to push my luck because we still<br />

had to drive home together.<br />

Robyn and I have autocrossed with<br />

the club since we joined in 2003. Autocrossing<br />

at Parade would be a challenge<br />

since we would be driving the Boxster<br />

which Robyn had just purchased at the<br />

end of May. I autocross a 1974 914, and<br />

Robyn runs a 1987 924S, we would not<br />

get a chance to autocross the Boxster<br />

before Parade and get a feel for it. I<br />

also signed up to take the Tech Quiz to<br />

test my knowledge of 914’s. Next step<br />

was to log on to the Parade website and<br />

register. The process was very straight<br />

forward. Select what you want to do,<br />

and select what you don’t want to do.<br />

Pick the banquets you want to attend<br />

and choose a tour or two to places you<br />

want to see. Here is a hint, if you are<br />

going to Parade register early. I waited<br />

too long and all the tours to Brumos<br />

Autowerks were full. I won’t make that<br />

mistake again.<br />

After the plans were made we waited<br />

two months before leaving for Savannah.<br />

We used two days for the trip stopping<br />

in Atlanta the first night, then arriving<br />

in Savannah early afternoon on Sunday.<br />

The first stop at Parade is the Welcome<br />

tent where you can ask questions such<br />

as where do we go now? We were given<br />

a bag full of snacks, a couple bottles<br />

of water and pointed to Parade checkin.<br />

The organization was excellent, at<br />

check-in we were given our name tags,<br />

Parade information and a check list to<br />

complete as we visited each event table.<br />

After completing the process and running<br />

across numerous Mavericks, like<br />

John and Chris Hamilton, it was time<br />

to check into our room and get ready<br />

for the Welcome Party. The delicious<br />

food that night was an authentic German<br />

menu complete with apple strudel<br />

for dessert. After dinner we beat a hasty<br />

retreat to our room.<br />

Our first volunteer assignment was<br />

helping park the cars for the Concours<br />

starting at 5am. The next morning came<br />

early as our group of twenty volunteers<br />

started placing the 120+ cars on<br />

the grass of Forsyth Park in downtown<br />

Savannah. By 8:30am all the beautiful<br />

machines were parked and their owners<br />

were completing last minute cleaning<br />

before the judging started. Robyn and I<br />

used the rest of the day to explore the local<br />

Savannah scenery and visited Tybee<br />

Island to see the beach and the 100 year<br />

old Tybee Lighthouse. We made it back<br />

to town in time to listen to Terry Zaccone<br />

(one of the best autocrossers ever)<br />

give an autocross chalk talk at Parade<br />

Headquarters in the Savannah Convention<br />

Center. Autocross is like any other<br />

competition, you never stop learning<br />

and you never stop trying to improve.<br />

The next morning started with a drive<br />

we signed up for going to Jekyll Island,<br />

home of the rich and famous during<br />

the early 1900’s. A guided tram tour<br />

described the history of the mansions<br />

on the island and the Spanish moss<br />

draped from the surrounding live oaks<br />

immersed you into the narrative. After<br />

returning from the drive, Robyn made<br />

a beeline for the Goodie Store. The Parade<br />

Goodie Store is the only place you<br />

can buy real Porsche sanctioned jewelry.<br />

Robyn grabbed two Porsche necklaces<br />

and a set of Porsche shield earrings. If<br />

you see her at a local PCA event check<br />

them out, I’m sure she will be wearing<br />

them.<br />

This day was also the first opportunity<br />

to walk the autocross course. We headed<br />

over to the venue to learn the course<br />

by walking it at least four times. With<br />

only five runs the quicker the course is<br />

learned the quicker your times will be.<br />

We headed back to the room after getting<br />

a feel for the course and got ready<br />

for the Concours banquet. The Concours<br />

banquet is the fanciest dinner of the<br />

whole Parade and where numerous PCA<br />

National award winners are announced.<br />

Again it was a night of great food and<br />

meeting new friends.<br />

Wednesday was another early start.<br />

This was the day Robyn and I would be<br />

Autocrossing the Boxster for the first<br />

time. We were in the first run group at<br />

8:00am. Robyn was very nervous; if you<br />

have followed Parade autocross results<br />

from the last few years you would know<br />

the Maverick Ladies are an autocross<br />

powerhouse. Wendy Shoffit was going<br />

for her third straight class and Fastest<br />

Time of the Day (FTD) trophy. Fran<br />

Ussery and Myra Sutton always trophied,<br />

and Robyn did not want to let the<br />

Ladies down. I was going to run before<br />

Robyn and as some of the other drivers<br />

finished their first runs I watched to see<br />

what kind of time I would need to be<br />

competitive. I’ve seen times between<br />

58-61 seconds, except for a Boxster S<br />

that rips off a super fast 51 second run.<br />

But he is not running in my class so I’m<br />

Robyn, doing her part in bring home a win!<br />

not worried about him. I complete my<br />

first run and figure if I get a 57 or 58 second<br />

time I’m in a good position since I<br />

always get faster with each run. I see my<br />

time and it’s a 54.4 and all I can think<br />

is this Boxster is a great autocross car.<br />

I remember back to the autocross chalk<br />

talk by Terry Zaccone when he said the<br />

most important bolt-on to make a car go<br />

faster is the nut behind the wheel. I’m<br />

feeling really good because I’m beating<br />

my closest competitor by over three seconds<br />

and I know my last run will be my<br />

fastest. After my next three runs, I’ve hit<br />

a cone and only dropped .1 seconds off<br />

my first run. Now I’m only a half second<br />

ahead of the second place driver and he<br />

has knocked three full seconds off of his<br />

first run. On my last run I take a third<br />

second off my best time and he also<br />

drops a third second. But it is too little<br />

and too late. I take first place in class<br />

S02 showroom stock Boxster.<br />

Now Robyn knows what the Boxster<br />

can do and when we autocross she is<br />

at most one or two seconds off my best<br />

time. Her first run is a test the course<br />

time of 63 seconds. By her fourth run<br />

she had taken six seconds off her time<br />

and was in first place by one second. By<br />

now her nerves had settled down and on<br />

the last run she drops one and a half seconds<br />

to clinch first place in class S02L.<br />

Also running in showroom stock class<br />

was Fran Ussery who placed second in<br />

S03L in her Boxster S, and Myra Sutton<br />

who placed second in class S11L in her<br />

Cayenne.<br />

On Thursday we headed back to the<br />

autocross venue so Robyn could work<br />

her volunteer shift and we both could<br />

cheer on James and Wendy Shoffit, and<br />

Ed Mayo who was Autocrossing his<br />

Concours winning 1967 911S. James<br />

and Wendy both took first place in their<br />

class, and Wendy continued her three<br />

year reign with the FTD Ladies win.<br />

On Friday I competed in my other<br />

event, the Technical and Historical<br />

Quiz. I had an hour and a half to answer<br />

50 questions on Porsche history and 25<br />

question specifically on 914’s. What I<br />

did learn from the quiz is I know more<br />

about 914’s than I do Porsche history.<br />

Missing only five questions about 914’s<br />

and 25 questions on Porsche history, the<br />

score was good enough for third place.<br />

I lost second place to Manny Alban,<br />

the PCA National President, by one tie<br />

breaker question.<br />

I’m not sure what Robyn did Friday<br />

because I spent the next six hours at the<br />

PCA Tech Academy learning subjects<br />

ranging from how to properly detail<br />

your Porsche to how ODBII works in<br />

newer cars. I ended up the day earning a<br />

PHD and becoming a “Doctor of<br />

Porschelogy,” I’m serious, I have the diploma.<br />

That evening at the Autocross<br />

banquet the Mavericks received their<br />

trophies. As Parade drew to a close on<br />

Saturday we attended the Victory banquet<br />

where a preview of next year’s Parade<br />

is presented. I asked Robyn if she<br />

had had a good time and enjoyed the<br />

experience of the Porsche Parade. With<br />

a big smile on her face she said she can’t<br />

wait till next year, Salt Lake City, here<br />

we come. What I have learned from being<br />

in the Porsche Club is that owning a<br />

Porsche can be a special experience, but<br />

that experience is not complete till you<br />

share it with 1500+ other Porsche enthusiasts.<br />

For Sale: 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, Guards Red/Black 911<br />

Carrera Coupe w/sunroof and G50 transmission. 110,500 miles. All original minus<br />

the stereo and tires. A factory whale tail has been added by a previous owner and<br />

the factory deck lid comes with the car. I have a 3-ring binder with the service<br />

history detailed by month and year. I’m the 4th owner and the 3rd owner owned<br />

the car from 1995-<strong>2011</strong>. The car has had paint work done on the driver’s side as<br />

the result of being keyed. To my knowledge, the car has never been in an accident<br />

and has a clean car fax. The odometer/speedometer stopped working twice during<br />

the life of the car and both times it was removed by the Porsche dealer and sent for<br />

factory repair. This caused a mileage note on carfax, but the mileage is accurate<br />

per the history of the car, inspections, dealer services and the title statement by the<br />

previous owner. Receipts for the service are in the file. The car has just undergone<br />

an extensive cosmetic freshening and is in great mechanical condition. The engine<br />
