Maverick Minutes: October Board Meeting By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary October 2, 2013 Region President John Hamilton began the meeting promptly at 7:03pm with a discussion of considering the “rebranding” of the name of our monthly Happy Hours to include sharing the additional information that dinner is always an option, and often a part of our gatherings. In addition to adult beverages being available at these Maverick monthly socials, we meet, greet, and eat! Be on the lookout for some updates. “Come for drinks, stay for dinner!”… not just happy hour! Welcome Gary Pearson, 2008 Cayman owner and PCA member for 18 months, who sat in on our board meeting. All PCA Members are welcome, and your first visit meal is on us! We hope your time with us inspires an interest in even greater club involvement. National Membership Chair Lisa Steele is helping to work on a proposal to have all dealerships offer a free membership to PCA with purchase of car. We’ve been working on this one for a while. Slipstream Editor and former Rally Chair Carey Spreen was not at the meeting, but asked John to give his report. Don Sebert and George Luxbacher attended an SCCA Rallymaster class a couple of weeks ago. With Don’s continued interest in becoming our Rally chair, Carey will help train and get him well-situated into that role. Don brings many years of experience as a Porsche owner and member of PCA. Our Membership Co-Chairs Susan and Tom Froehlich were not able to attend this month’s board meeting either, but asked John to report that in September, we lost eight members to non-renewal, which we are working on addressing in specific ways moving forward. More to follow on these developments! Since Social Chair Tracy Robertson was not able to attend, John gave the Social report as well. As of this writing, about 35 people had signed up for the Cars and Cattle event, which will have taken place on Saturday, October 5. Also, Raffle tickets to win a one-year lease of a 2014 Macan, the new Porsche small SUV, are available for purchase through our website mav.pca.org. You can also purchase them through board members at all remaining events, right up until the day of the Raffle drawing, January 25, which will take place at the All Member Party. John recently learned that the rules state that Raffle ticket sales must be to PCA members only, contrary to what we had understood up to this point. A clarification from John will be forthcoming soon. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit noted that she will have a display and Raffle tickets available for sale at the Club Race and solo-only DE at Eagles Canyon later in October. We are working hard at finding more items for the silent auction portion of the Founders’ Day event, benefiting the Hope Shelter. We then moved on to officially voting on (and passing) a measure stating that we will next year have 11 monthly board meetings per year; not convening in July. John then talked about an email he received from a member who owns Sports Car Junkies, requesting that we facilitate interest in his offering to PCA Member business owners who might benefit from being included on his podcast, which incorporates business into folks’ love of Porsche. We will forward this on to our Tech chair, Ed Mullenix. Also, John shared another email request from Car Guy Concourso; it was determined that we would ask our Concours chair Andy Kay to attend one of his events to check it out and see if it aligns as an opportunity that would be of interest to our Membership! Consider yourself officially volunteered, Andy! Next up was Region Vice President Gareth Maurice, who purchased the new Corel Draw graphics software for use with generating ads and graphics for Slipstream. Gareth is working with Carey Spreen and our former graphic artist Christy Payne to incorporate the design package to full use. Also, he mentioned that we are current on our insurance for Cars and Cattle, as well as the Sunday Drive to the San Martiño winery. David Robertson came to the meeting with Raffle tickets available to distribute to the board for sale. Region Treasurer Jim Falgout was glad to report that we are in healthy financial shape. We were all proud to hear that he recently acquired a 2003 996 with only 26,000 miles on it, and now has a 968 for sale! We feel sure it will not be for sale for long. Frank Briggs, former Concours Co-Chair, sat in for our Happy Hour/Maverick Monthly Social chair, Mike Farrar, and let us know that the November 21 Happy Hour has moved from Cristina’s to Uncle Julio’s in Grapevine. Please always check the most current on-line calendar at mav.pca.org for best information. Visiting observer and Region Past President Mike Brodigan chimed in, though he 6 November
was just observing this evening, mentioning that he would like to resurrect a former tradition of the December Happy Hour: hosting it at the Bavarian Grill in Plano! Stay tuned for that affirmation! Tourmeister team Co-Chair Brendan Eagan started his report by saying that everyone is excited about being invited again by the Ramos family for another Sunday Drive on October 13 out to their San Martiño Winery near Rockwall. Region Tourmeister John Harvey and his team have a fun route mapped for the Drive before we lunch there and tour the facility. Also, he reminded us that the Fort Richardson Sunday Drive, northwest of Fort Worth, is November 17, and the Frick’n Toy Run, hosted by Jean and David Frick, is December 8. As always, the events Calendar is available on the club website, as well as listed in each month’s Slipstream. Please keep Autocross and Time Trial chair Travis Howard’s wife Robyn in your thoughts as she recovers from neck surgery. The Time Trial/Autocross weekend at the end of September at Mineral Wells went great, despite a little bit of rain on Saturday, but Sunday was a beautiful day.
