good time and passed another
slower team on the way to the third
landmark. They must have been observing
the ridiculously slow legal
speed limit. “Rookies,” we thought.
The third landmark is where
things began to get dicey. We
missed it and had to retrace
the course. We could not find
it anywhere. My driver was very
gracious in his acceptance of
the possibility that the Navigator
may have made a mistake.
We found the next landmark with
ease, and quickly moved our way
out to the country part of the rally.
Things were back on track, and in
the process of going to the next
landmark, we passed yet another
Porsche team and waved to them
enthusiastically. Maybe we were
getting a little too confident.
This relaxing joy ride in the
country unexpectedly started losing
some of its joy. Firmly in charge,
and convinced I was navigating the
944S with a better-than-respectable
time, we came to an impasse. It
was a “go left or right” decision.
Now, I do not know who wrote the
guidance instructions, but I assure

you they were not describing the
road I was on. I confidently told my
driver to go right and one of the
two teams we had passed, followed
us. The other team behind us took
a left, or was that a curved straight?
Shortly down the road, the team
following us turned around. Still
confident, and somewhat defiant,
I said, “Hold course. We are going
the right way.” After some choice
words of encouragement from the
driver, we chose to turn around.
Once again back and on track,
we entered the quaint old area
town of Cedar Hill looking for
the next landmark. “Can’t these
people make signs you can read?”
I thought to myself. No longer so
gracious, my driver started questioning
my ancestry and something
about my right to own a Porsche.
Drivers! They are so temperamental.
A few red lights, a couple of
stop signs and a Game Warden with
an attitude later, we arrived at the
Cedar Hill State Park finish line.
Meeting our newest friends in
a great lakeside park and the
delicious hot dogs and hamburgers
finished, it was now time for
