Advanced Teen Driving: Notes from a Bondurant School Graduate

Editor’s Note: Yes, it’s true -- PCA is
not immune from nepotism, and here
is your proof. In March of this year, my
16-year-old daughter Geneva attended a
two-day Advanced Teen Driving course at
the Bondurant School in Chandler, AZ.
I asked her to write an article about it in
hopes of encouraging other parents of new
drivers to consider taking Drivers Ed to the next level . . .
Hello, and welcome to the Bondurant School
of High Performance Driving! I will never
forget my experience at this incredibly fun
school of driving. I took the two-day Advanced
Teen Driving Course, but there are plenty of other
classes you can take, and they are for any age.
The course I took had many different lessons in it,
including a small timed autocross, slalom, and the
“famous” skid car. My personal favorite was an exercise
simulating positioning yourself in a specific lane in a
very short amount of time. There were three different
lanes, each with a traffic light above them, controlled
by an instructor. When the three lights turned green,

we floored the
gas, reaching 30
mph at first, but
getting up to 60
later on. As soon as
we got to a certain
point, the instructor
would change
two of the green
lights to red, and
we would have to
maneuver into the
lane with the green
light and stop.
Another one of
Slalom exercise my favorites was,
at the end of each
day, the students were led (each student had their
own Camaro SS, by the way) by the instructors on the
Bondurant race course. It was so exciting getting to
go on a race course and drive it for the first time!
