Gimme a Minute: November Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary November 5, 2014 The meeting began at 7:02 pm with President John Hamilton introducing guests David Grant and Vicki Poirier visiting from Winnipeg. They are avid car nuts and enjoy working races. They will be flagging at our upcoming Club Race. Welcome to town and thanks for the help! John mentioned that the date has been set for the next Club Race at COTA in Austin for May 9-10, 2015. As this has been a three-region collaborative event for two years, we discussed whether or not we would want to again participate. A motion was made during the meeting to approve sending a check for $9,000 as our Region’s portion to reserve the track next year. The motion was passed. Membership Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich sent in their report that we have 1483 primary and 2355 total members. While down from the all-time high in July, it’s back on the uptrend. Goodie Store Chair Pat Friend reported that the company we had been getting our regional merchandise from went belly up, causing orders to not be filled. He moved quickly and found a new resource in Proforma. They provide merchandise for PCA National and several other regions. We currently have 11 items chosen for the Maverick store, but others can be added at any time. Send an email to goodiestore@mavpca.org to receive a link to the full catalog. Pick out a new design from the catalog, email Pat, and not only will it be added to our store for others to purchase, but you will receive a 20% discount from the new item purchase. Contact Pat for the complete details. Unfortunately, Proforma does not do name badges, so he will continue working to find a source for those. As Ad Chair, Pat also secured a new full page advertiser, Garages of Texas. DE Chair Chris Tabor next said that the DE events have been going well all year long. All have made money for the club and many run groups have been completely sold out. He has reserved dates for 2015, which he will pass on to those who need them. Concours Chair Andy Kay mentioned that the 928 3rd Coast Event was coming up the next weekend in the Hill Country. He will be in attendance and will work to get an article and photos for Slipstream. Social Chair Tracy Robertson is excited that Founders’ Day is coming up Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Bent Tree Country Club in North Dallas. The Silent Auction is always a big draw. She wants everyone to come, especially board members. At the event will be the photography contest. We had more entries than expected, which is great. Due to the later-than-normal date for Founders’ Day, we opted to not have a Holiday Party this year, so we will still be collecting gift cards, but will do so at Founders’ Day. The All Member Party is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. Treasurer Jim Falgout reported that we have a healthy bank account at around $130K before we send the check for the COTA Club Race. All events have been making money, which has helped greatly. Rally Chair Don Sebert said that he would be working with John Harvey to combine a rally with the Sunday Drive “Frick’n Toy Run” (affectionately named for our own Dave and Jean Frick) scheduled for Dec. 7. Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey mentioned that the drive to the Vetro Glass tour on Nov. 15 had to change the start time to 9 am. He has other ideas brewing for future great drives and destinations. During the Grand Pappy Point tour recently they utilized run groups designated by different colors (similar to DE events), which seemed to do a very good job organizing everyone. He will continue using that method for future tours. TT and AX Chair Travis Howard next said that the Oct. 5 Time Trial at MotorSport Ranch was a great success. There were 40 drivers. Since the event wasn’t completely full, it allowed the participants more runs. The Oct. 25-26 TT/AX weekend in Mineral Wells had a good turnout as well. Upcoming is the Nov. 15-16 double TT weekend, also in MW. He will have some special trophies. Although no full replacement chair has stepped up, he is trying to work with other clubs to share their Autocross events and will even help set up dates, if needed. Reporting for Swap Meet Chair Robyn Howard, Travis said that the Oct. 18 Swap Meet had around 20 swappers and about 65 attendees. As always, Zims offered great discounts to all in attendance. 6 December
DE & CR Registrar Wendy Shoffit stated that the upcoming Club Race had about 70 racers signed up and over 50 DE entrants. It should be a great event! She also has been working with Tracy and Linda on items for Founders’ Day and with daughter, Jasmine, on doing Slipstream event ads. Editor Carey Spreen reported that despite some problems at the printer, Slipstream got out on time. Many thanks to our mail house, GM Direct Marketing, for their speedy work. He also said that Sue Crimm will be lending her expertise to provide lighting for the photography contest at Founders’ Day. He also has a contact for new drive ideas in the Tyler area. Lastly, he has been working with Jim Hirsch to get help with Slipstream. Hopefully Jim will feel comfortable enough to take over as editor next year. Finally, John Hamilton announced the winner of the Mav of the Month, Pat Friend, for working so quickly and diligently to solve the crisis with the Goodie Store. Congratulations!
