Concours on the Avenue: To Carmel-by-the-Sea and Back

in the October
issue, I
was busy prepping
a Porsche 928 for
the Carmel concours
event. This
month takes you
through an adventure
they make movies about: four
men over 50, in a van, for a 1500-mile
road trip. My,
how you get
to know each

The corner in Winslow, AZ
Friday, Aug. 7, we traveled 800
miles via Route 66, staying the night
in Gallup, NM. A rather uneventful
day, but we pushed hard to play the
next day. Saturday, we played tourist
with our first stop in Winslow, AZ.
We took pictures, bought T-shirts,
and literally we literally tried to
“Take it Easy,” “Standing on the corner
in Winslow AZ” paying tribute
to the Eagles.

From Winslow, we traveled to Meteor
Crater, AZ, where 50,000 years
ago a meteor crashed into the earth
leaving a hole a mile wide and eighteen
stories deep. Scientists have
been exploring the site for years,
digging five stories into the crater
for research. NASA even used the
site to simulate a moon walk.

Off to the Grand Canyon. On our
way, it was incredible to see how trees
were literally burned on one side but
not the other from wildfires. As we
