LAUNCHING TORCH<br />
American troops crash onto a beach at Arezeu, Algeria, as<br />
part of Operation Torch – the <strong>All</strong>ied invasion of Algeria<br />
and Morocco, both controlled by Vichy France. While<br />
Britain’s Desert Rats were still battling with Rommel’s<br />
Afrika Korps further east, this US-led invasion of<br />
Axis-controlled Africa aimed to liberate France’s<br />
protectorates, while also striking a blow to<br />
the Vichy regime.<br />
