or strength. They would also include<br />

titles in their names as well as those of<br />

theirchosensuccessors.<br />

itsbeginningsasthenameofan<br />

inspiring Roman dictator to a title to<br />

be used by an emperor. Imperator<br />

means ‘commander’, and emperors<br />

couldalsocallthemselvesAugustus,<br />

which meant ‘great’ or ‘venerable’,<br />

among many other names.<br />

Forexample,themanwereferto<br />

as Tiberius was born Tiberius Claudius<br />

Nero. Yet when he became emperor in 14<br />

CE, his name became Imperator Tiberius<br />

Caesar Augustus.<br />

Jamestown, Virginia (established in 1607), the very first<br />

colony of the New World was formed by Christopher<br />

Columbus in 1493, following his initial discovery in<br />

1492. Columbus sailed with 17 ships carrying<br />

1,500 men and called his colony La Isabela,<br />

situated on the north coast of the Dominican<br />
