NATIONAL PET MONTH by Dale King The Euthanasia Antidote No-Kill Shelters Thriving in South Florida It’s hard to believe, by today’s standards, that euthanasia was once not only the accepted, but preferred method of controlling overpopulation in dogs and cats. In fact, those who sought to protect strays from death by opening their homes to them were considered “rebels” for rocking the boat of tradition, said Lynda Foro, founder of Doing Things for Animals, an organization that developed about the same time no-kill animal shelters were gaining popularity. Today, several facilities offer alternatives to euthanasia in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. “The best way to describe the no-kill movement is to recognize its simplicity,” said Foro. “These are caregivers and organizations who generally specialize in services they perform best – high-volume adoption, lifetime care, rescue, feral cat management, spay/neuter, etc. Their common goal is to save animals’ lives when there is a quality alternative to killing.” Perhaps best known for its three-county outreach and pledge to be 100 percent no-kill is Tri County Animal Rescue (TCAR) in Boca Raton. The facility last month held its 14th annual fundraising “Doggie Ball” and marked its 20th anniversary. Like many no-kill shelters, it began as a home-based operation, then took a major step forward in 2001 when it took over the former Boca Raton municipal shelter and, this year, launched a capital campaign to construct a new building. The Florida Humane Society is also a no -kill facility, located in a new building at 3870 N. Powerline Road, close to Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach, and Deerfield Beach. It serves all of South Florida. Though it may sound like a municipal shelter, the Florida Humane Society is a nonprofit dependent solely upon donations from the community for finances. It holds cat adoptions at the Petsmart Store at 4151 Turtle Creek Drive in Coral Springs on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm and at the Petsmart at U.S. 441 and Glades Road in West Boca on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach is a limited-admission humane society and provides services to more than 40,000 cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens each year. It addresses animal welfare and overpopulation through a variety of services. “We don’t euthanize except for extreme illness or extreme ferociousness,” said Louis Kolber, a call center representative at the shelter at 3100-3200 N. While it may not be 100 percent no-kill, its mission is to provide shelter to lost, homeless, or unwanted animals, to provide spay/ neuter and other medical services for companion animals, and to promote the bond between people and animals. Just recently, Peggy Adams sent nearly 80 cats to New York to make room for an anticipated influx of cats and kittens. “This is part of our preparation for the annual kitten season, ‘kittengeddon,’ more or less,” said CEO Rich Anderson. Shelter staffers say the cat population soars to more than 1,000 during the spring, the time of year cats give birth. Lack of space has stymied at least one area facility. The telephone message at Get a Life Rescue in Plantation says the organization is not taking in pets, and advises callers to contact facilities outside of Broward County. Tri County Animal Rescue has embarked on a new project – to build a new shelter that will replace the 30-year-old building it inherited in 2001. To date, the volunteer-run facility has rescued more than 53,000 animals in distress in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. NATIONAL PET MONTH Pets & Reps May is National Pet Month, and the sales staff at the Parklander has plenty of reasons to celebrate. This is sales representative Mary Jones’daughter Christina Keltz-Jones and her autism service dog Jordan. He was 24 hours from being euthanized and would have been put down if he hadn’t been rescued to be an autism service dog. Mimi is the beloved shorthaired tuxedo cat adopted at the Tierheim (German for animal shelter) in Berlin, Germany, by Alyson McLean and Peter Lobl, who brought her all the way home to Tamarac. Karen Silver is an account executive with the Parklander. This is her daughter Marlee and Ruby Ruby, a 12-yearold calico they rescued at the no-kill Cats Exclusive Inc. shelter in Margate. Sales rep Ken DeTrolio and his family got these Cocker Spaniels from a breeder in Florida. They have had Mandy (left), since 3 months old and Molly since 2 1 /2. Molly was being shown and was just shy of champion. They are seven years old.
