Combining a vacation or trip abroad with volunteering on local projects is one way you can immerse yourself in local cultures and make a difference. However, you need to ask yourself some serious questions to help decide where and what type of volunteer travel you’d enjoy. What’s your passion? Teaching kids or helping them? Rebuilding homes destroyed by hurricanes or a tsunami? Are you willing to live and work with people whose culture and outlook is very different than your own? Can you handle living in a tent or shack with an outhouse, or do you want to be in a hotel? Travel Industry Association said they were currently interested in taking a volunteer or service-based vacation. These travelers choose voluntourism combining traditional travel with volunteer work to help make a difference in their lives and others. Here are a few of the companies helping people make these vacations a reality: Earthwatch Institute On a volunteer vacation or trip with the nonprofit Earthwatch Institute you could take an Amazon River trip to help with the conservation of monkeys, sea otters, and birds; trap and track puma, jaguarundi, and other cats in Argentina’s pampas grass; or collect data to help save the endangered forest marsupials in Australia. i-to-i i-to-i is a company that sends more than 5,000 people a year to volunteer at local projects around the world and immerse themselves in local cultures. American Jewish World Service The American Jewish World Service offers individual and group service programs for Jews interested in traveling to foreign countries to volunteer for grassroots social change projects. United Nations World Volunteer Web The United Nations World Volunteer Web is an online global clearinghouse for information and resources linked to volunteerism. Together for Good Together for Good is a nonprofit organization created to help traveling individuals make a difference in the lives of others. It provides detailed information on opportunities to give back on vacations as well as bringing groups together on high-profile trips and special events. CheapTickets.com CheapTickets.com has teamed up with United Way to offer travelers a route to setting up volunteer vacations, or adding a day or more of volunteering during a planned trip. Voluntourism.org Voluntourism.org is a website with lots of information about taking volunteer vacations, and combining volunteerism and travel. Responsibletravel. com Run by a United Kingdombased travel agency, the responsibletravel.com website focuses on eco-holidays, including many that offer a volunteer work component. y Alison Berger Sharing Your World Public Art Features Kent Ullberg CULTURE “Nature is everything for me,” Ullberg said. “I grew up in the North Sea in Sweden, and having ancestors that date back to the Vikings, I feel the marine environment is in my blood. My family lived on this island for generations, and they were working class, which made a huge impact on me when it came to my true passion, which is sculpture.” He attributes the anatomical accuracy of his marine pieces to the renowned artist, Ph.D. marine biologist, and very dear friend Guy Harvey. “I have learned more from him about the marine environment and I owe a lot to him,” Ullberg said after a thoughtful pause. He included a school of fish, dolphins, and a sea turtle on a vertical line to draw attention to the fragile marine world, namely the coral reefs. The magnificent sculpture perfectly symbolizes the 40th anniversary of Broward County Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program. “I feel that when it comes to giving a message to the public, what is more compelling than sculpture? It communicates realism unlike any other medium,” he said. In a digitized world of microchips and man-made reality, Swedish sculptor Kent Ullberg is redefining specialized wildlife art. By examining our relationship to the natural world around us, Ullberg’s spectacular vision allows the viewer to reconnect and appreciate a life free from smartphones and social media, and connect back to the Earth. Taking his inspiration from Africa, where he was a curator for the National Museum in Botswana, Ullberg spent a long period of his life dedicated to field study. “I was isolated in Botswana, cut off from the modern art world for seven years. It was because of this that my true vision emerged as a sculptor of wildlife,” Ullberg told me in a recent interview. At a time where public art has never been so important, Ullberg’s sculptures are a refreshing reminder to stop and appreciate what is important in life. Ullberg’s famous Sailfish in Three Stages of Ascending (bronze, granite, and water, 1990) can be seen at the Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center. The tremendous sculpture stands 30 feet high and took more than two years to complete. As public art is a reflection of how we see the world, the three bronze sailfish seem to capture the simplicity of life and what it means to be a part of something much greater. Protruding from a deep pool of a granite fountain, each bronze sculpture simulates a natural occurrence of a day in the life of a fisherman. In his hometown in Sweden, Ullberg was taught to worship and respect the natural world. He pioneered with his gift of sculpture to create some of the most famous pieces that are displayed internationally. Public art allows a group to partake in a shared experience in a very special way. “Public sculpture becomes a part of your consciousness unlike any other art form,” Ullberg said. “When dealing with public space, these huge, iconic objects become meeting places, and I feel we have an obligation to communicate in an artistic language when dealing with the natural world.” Rather than gaze at oil on canvas hanging in a gallery, Ullberg’s giant bronze sculptures draw people together and allow us to reflect on our shared relationship to the world around us. For these reasons, his work epitomizes the importance of Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program. His art allows nature to transcend any threat imposed by the evolving world of technological advancement and pulls the eye back to the environment in which we live.
