Maury Regional Medical Center May 2009 Vol. XXVIII, Issue 5
Maury Regional EMS Receives Heroic Award
Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) received the
EMS Star of Life Award for their efforts to aid Sergeant Brian Owens,
a member of the Maury County Sheriff’s Department who was shot in
the line of duty in December 2008.
The EMS Star of Life event honored the accomplishments of EMS
personnel from across the state who provide exemplary life-saving
care to adult and pediatric patients. The award was presented May
12 at the Tennessee Emergency Medical Services for Children (TN
EMSC) Award Ceremony in Nashville where response scenarios were
presented and EMS caregivers were reunited with the individuals they
treated.
“I could not be more proud of our staff and the professionalism that
they exhibited in a difficult situation. Coming to the aid of any victim
of violence is difficult, but when it is one of your own—an emergency
responder who was attempting to provide aid to another—it’s heartwrenching,”
said Steve Fuston, EMS director. “Our employees worked
closely with the Vanderbilt LifeFlight crew in providing the care that Sergeant Owens needed in route to Vanderbilt.”
Maury Regional EMS personnel honored were Michael Bridges, EMT-P; Danny Cupples, EMT-P, shift supervisor;
Joshua McClarren, EMT-P; Garry McPeak, EMT-IV; Jennifer Murks, EMT-IV; Amanda Watson Schatz, EMT-P;
and George Whitwell, EMT-IV. Vanderbilt LifeFlight personnel honored were Patrick Hall, EMT/RN and Daniel Horne,
EMT/RN.
National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week
National Hospital Week was May 11-17 and National Nurses Week
was May 6-12. Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) recognized these
weeks with a variety of activities for employees. The medical center held a
National Hospital Week meal (left) on May 14 and 16, in which employees
enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers. Pictured at the event are (left to right)
Kristen Wayne, contract compliance analyst; Dawn Cashion, senior decision
support analyst; Chad Williams, cost/decision support analyst; Donna
Hall, decision support analyst; and Cindy Woodard, reimbursement analyst.
In recognition of National Nurses Week, County Mayor James Bailey,
Jr. (pictured at right, center) signed a proclamation, officially honoring the
nurses in the community during the week. Pictured with Mayor Bailey
Letters of Thanks
To MRMC employees:
I recently spent some time at
Maury Regional Medical Center
while my mom, Carolyn Belew,
was a patient. Sadly, she passed
away March 31, 2009…I wanted
you to know that my brother, sister
and I were thoroughly impressed
by the kindness and professionalism
exhibited by your staff, physicians
and volunteers. My family
and I could not have asked for a
better hospital or group of people.
My mom received exemplary care
administered by a dedicated and
passionate team.
My mom was admitted through
the emergency center to CCU. She
stayed in CCU for several days and
the staff was so attentive to our
needs. They let us visit often and
stay longer than posted. They kept
us informed. They consoled and
encouraged us. They were genuinely
interested in our well-being.
After undergoing a couple of
surgical procedures my mom was
moved to the Stepdown Unit and
again experienced an outpouring
of superb care. The nurses, technicians,
therapists and other staff
members were attentive to all her
needs and requests.
Please express my appreciation
to your management team,
nursing leadership, and ancillary
staff and management. You have a
fine hospital and an extraordinary
staff.
~Dewayne Belew
March 2009 issue of The VitaLink
that the Scrub Sale sold $3,600
amount is $36,000.
Healthy Living Cookbook Released
The Heart Center at Maury Regional Medical Center
(MRMC) recently released “Cooking for Life,” a cookbook
featuring recipes for healthy living, information on the Heart
Center and tips for heart healthy eating. The Maury Regional Healthcare
Foundation will use all proceeds to
support cardiac patients.
“There are a number of lifestyle
choices that contribute to having a
healthy heart, and having a nutritious
diet low in fats and cholesterol is one
of them,” said Dr. Janice Vinson, a
specialist in cardiology on the medi-
cal staff at MRMC who is quoted and
pictured in the cookbook. “Being heart
healthy doesn’t mean giving up taste.
Numerous, flavorful and filling recipes
are included in the cookbook such as
Greek lasagna, smothered pork chops
and raspberry chocolate soufflé.”
Recipes include tasty appetizers and seasonings, hearty breakfast items,
salads, sides, sauces, enticing entrees and decadent desserts. A nutritional
Insurance Considerations While
Traveling
Summer vacation season is upon us and
here are a few guidelines to follow should you have to utilize
your BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) benefits away from home:
1. Always take a copy of your insurance card with you on any trip as
it contains specific information regarding your plan’s network and
group/member identification numbers.
2. In the event of an emergency, go to the nearest hospital and call
BCBST customer service at 800.565.9140 to ensure prior authorization
of services. You must also call within 24 hours if you are admitted.
3. For non-emergency related care, call 800.810.BLUE (2583) to locate
a doctor or hospital within the U.S. (outside of Tennessee).
4. For travel outside of the U.S., verify your international benefits with
the Worldwide Service Center at 800.810.BLUE before your trip. They
will also instruct you on whom to call should you need assistance in
an emergency or hospitalization while out of the country.
In most cases, you should not have to pay up front for inpatient care at
participating hospitals except for the usual out-of-pocket ($100 ER co-pay,
deductible, etc.) expenses. The hospital should submit any claims on your
behalf directly to BCBST. However, you may have to pay up front for care
received from non-participating doctors and hospitals.
Additional information may be found online at bcbst.com or by contacting
Cindy Wilmore in Human Resources at extension 1096.

EMS Award,
from page 1
Brian Owens praised those who
came to his rescue, “I have worked
with the EMS personnel in Maury
County for several years at accident
scenes and other traumatic situations
and have always appreciated what
they did for the community. But when
I was the one receiving their care it really
hit home. Words cannot express
the gratitude I feel for what they did for
me on December 10, 2008. Their fast
response and professionalism ensuring
my safe transport to Vanderbilt is
something I will be forever thankful
for. Maury County is fortunate to have
such an excellent group of emergency
health care professionals. I was so
happy to see them getting the recognition
they are so deserving of at the
EMS Awards banquet. They are my
heroes. Because of their care and
the good people at Vanderbilt I was
able to return back to work on April 6.
Just saying thank you doesn’t seem
like enough, but I really do appreciate
them and look forward to working
with them in the future.”
analysis is provided for each recipe,
listing the number of calories, grams
