Southwest Arts Festival 

The Southwest Arts Festival is returning to 

the Empire Polo Grounds for its 31st year 

this month, and for the first time ever, residents 

will have four days to explore the art 

show, deemed one of North America’s top 

100 events by Travel Magazine. 

The festival will be open to the public from 

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 26, 27, 28 and 29 at 

the Empire Polo Club. 

Tickets cost $12 for general admission and 

$15 for a four-day pass including parking. 

Seniors can buy tickets for $10 and children 

under 14 can get in for free. Guests are asked 

not to bring any pets except for those that are 

designated service animals.

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

Well we have now seen the inauguration of 

the 45th President of the United States who 

in his first few days has decided it is best to 

govern via Twitter, attack the media, attack 

our intelligence community, rescind protections 

for women, rescind opportunities for 

first time home buyers and stack his cabinet 

with billionaires and millionaires. 

Question for the day – Will he be in office in 

four years or be impeached by Congress for 

corruption? I say 18-20 months and Mike 

Pence will be President. 

Our Congressman, Raul Ruiz, skipped the 

swearing in and was slapped by the hometown 

paper saying he should have been there 

to represent ALL of the district. Hmmmm 

– I would prefer Dr. Ruiz be true to himself 

and represent most his district and have the 

paper call on the President to represent ALL 

the country. 

We should see the full cabinet sworn in by the 

end of the week and more executive orders 

pealing back actions of the Obama Administration. 

Let’s be hopeful but vigilant. We 

must be prepared to speak out when things 

are not right. I had the opportunity to attend 

the Palm Springs Women’s March, along with 

Councilmembers Kaplan and Aguilar from 

Cathedral City. It was great to see hundreds 

of people there to protest. There were also 

rallies in Palm Desert and Coachella. 

Here in California our new Attorney General, 

Xavier Becerra should be sworn in by the end 

of the week as well. He is a good man and has 

pledges to push back in court against actions 

by Trump on issues that conflict with state 

law. I fully support him in his efforts. 

This past week I also attended a commemoration 

for Dr. Martin Luther King, with Mayor 

Moon of Palm Springs and Councilman Miller 

of Indio. Strange the differences between 

King and Trump. 

The one thing that is certain is that the United 

States doesn’t do easy! We must do things 

difficult. But democracy is worth it. 

Locally, Thursday, February 2nd at 5pm there 

will be a “City Hall at Your Corner” will be at 

La Michoacana Ice Cream Parlor in the Stater 

Brothers Shopping Center at Vista Chino and 

Landau. Everyone is invited. Councilman 

Aguilar and I will be there. Questions, comments, 

ideas or you just want to listen – come 

on over.

as an expert in transportation issues and is very active 

in working on bringing passenger rail service to the 

COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay 

elected city council members In Riverside County. He 

has served on the boards of the National League of 

Cities and the League of California Cities and as President 

of the Southern CA Association of Governments.
