Introduction to Sports Medicine is a hands-on class<br />

exploring athletic taping and wrapping, CPR, first aid, health<br />

occupations, and medical terminology. Students complete<br />

the course with usable skills to help family and friends<br />

and with an understanding of health career choices.<br />

by earning a B or higher in this class.<br />

Sports Medicine I applies anatomy, physiology, and<br />

kinesiology to injury prevention, assessment, treatment,<br />

and rehabilitation. Content includes musculoskeletal<br />

anatomy, injury assessment skills, as well as nutrition<br />

and strengthening programs and much more. Students<br />

prepare to learn entry-level skills in allied health careers<br />

associated with health, fitness and athletic training or to<br />

pursue post-high school education in related fields.<br />

The Sports Medicine Internship class incorporates learning<br />

in the classroom with lab experience. Students must complete<br />

a specific number of unpaid internship hours during the<br />

semester by job shadow of allied health professionals such<br />

as doctors, physical therapists, fitness instructors, nurses,<br />

exercise physiologists, and many others. Internships may also<br />

include assisting with various high school athletic teams.<br />

Sports Medicine II continues the study of musculoskeletal<br />

anatomy and physiology, injury prevention, injury evaluation,<br />

treatment, and rehabilitation programs and completes the<br />

study of major joints. Internship hours may be completed at<br />

off-campus sites and/or under less supervision with proven<br />

competence. The Washington Vocational Sports Medicine<br />

Association State Competition is a major, class activity.<br />

The Sports Medicine Internship class incorporates learning<br />

for responsible decision making in a variety of areas<br />

(career, food, and financial management) that confront<br />

young adults as they leave high school. The primary<br />

focus of the class is the development of essential skills<br />

for living on one’s own, in a family, or with others.<br />
