Program Introduction and Information<br />

English Learners (ELs)<br />

Everett Public <strong>School</strong>s English Learners (ELs) courses are limited to speakers of other languages who are not proficient<br />

in English. Speakers of other languages who come to Everett Public <strong>School</strong>s from abroad as well as from other schools are<br />

required to take an entrance proficiency test. Students who score below a proficient level on the entrance assessment are<br />

required to be enrolled in a minimum of one EL English class per semester until the state standard for English proficiency is<br />

achieved. EL students complete the majority of required courses through accommodations in the mainstream program.<br />

Designed for the newest students in the EL program, this<br />

class focuses on the beginning stages of English language<br />

acquisition. Beginning level reading, writing, listening,<br />

and speaking skills in English are taught. Students are<br />

introduced to academic and content-area vocabulary as<br />

well as strategies for success in mainstream classrooms.<br />

The curricula implemented are Visions and Rosetta<br />

Stone. The class may be repeated for an elective credit.<br />

Transitional English<br />

Transitional English provides assistance to students with<br />

limited English proficiency in learning the communicative<br />

skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing English. The<br />

aim is to improve student level of achievement in language<br />

skills to help them become proficient in conversational<br />

English, pronunciation, and basic English grammar.<br />

As a continuation of the development of the reading, writing,<br />

speaking, and listening skills learned in Transitional English,<br />

this course focuses on improving student grammar and<br />

reading comprehension. Literature-based approaches to<br />

teaching grammar are used. Reading strategies for improved<br />

comprehension are explicitly taught. Writing paragraphs<br />

and multi-paragraph essays for a variety of purposes is<br />

emphasized. The curricula implemented are Visions B, as well<br />

as Read 180. SpringBoard may also be used as curriculum.<br />

The course is designed to bridge the gap between EL<br />

classes and the English curriculum. Ninth grade text and<br />

modified versions of supplemental materials are used, as<br />

well as SpringBoard. Students are expected to work toward<br />

standard using the district writing rubric. The modes of<br />

writing covered are compare/contrast, expository, persuasive,<br />

and argumentative. Reading comprehension strategies for<br />

understanding literary and informational texts are emphasized.<br />
