Program Introduction and Information<br />
English<br />
The Everett Public <strong>School</strong>s English courses are aligned to offer students a variety of language arts options. Students are<br />
required to complete four credits of English courses during their high school career. All courses of different challenge<br />
levels integrate reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language with a focus on teaching text comprehension and<br />
strategies. Students also learn to apply various writing skills to complete the process throughout each level.<br />

In English 1, students develop analytical reading,<br />
academic writing, critical thinking, and presentation<br />
skills. <strong>Course</strong> content includes myth, short story, poetry,<br />
drama, and novels. Analytical reading instruction extends<br />
understanding of literary elements and language and<br />
extend proficiency in the three modes of writing as<br />
outlined by the Common Core State Standards(CCSS):<br />
narrative, explanatory/informative and argumentative. In<br />
addition, students develop CCSS language standards.<br />

drama, and novels. Students engage in the writing process to<br />
produce increasingly sophisticated essays. Students analyze<br />
literature, conduct research, and synthesize meaning from<br />
historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts while pursuing<br />
multiple themes. Analytical reading instruction extends<br />
understanding of literary elements and language and writing<br />
instruction extends proficiency in the three modes of writing<br />
as outlined by the Common Core State Standards(CCSS):<br />
narrative, explanatory/informative, and argumentative.<br />
