and cultural awareness. The AP German Language and Culture<br />

course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at<br />

the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of<br />

language and culture, the course is almost exclusively taught in<br />

German. The AP German Language and Culture course engages<br />

students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary<br />

and historical contexts and develops student awareness and<br />

appreciation of cultural products, practices and perspectives.<br />

Spanish 1 students learn to speak, understand, read, and<br />

write Spanish on a beginning level. Upon successfully<br />

completing this course, students communicate about the<br />

alphabet, numbers, the calendar, greetings, themselves, their<br />

daily routine, family, and food. Students write complete<br />

sentences with correct verb forms in Spanish and learn<br />

about cultures and customs through readings, videos, and<br />

supplementary exercises. Students gain the ability and<br />

confidence to communicate in Spanish at a beginning level.<br />

Spanish 2 students will continue to study speaking,<br />

understanding, reading, and writing in Spanish. Upon<br />

successfully completing this course, students are able<br />

to further communicate about their lives and activities<br />

in Spanish. Students are able to write short paragraphs<br />

with complex sentences in the present, past, and<br />

immediate future. Students are encouraged to use<br />

language skills to effectively communicate. The cultures<br />

of many Spanish speaking areas throughout the world are<br />

studied through the use of supplementary materials.<br />

course hones reading and writing skills to guide students<br />

through college-level texts. Students write compositions<br />

on a variety of topics and improve conversational abilities<br />

by practicing speaking about various topics such as<br />

food, family, places, and activities and by participating<br />

in songs and language games. Students are expected to<br />

use Spanish as primary language in the classroom.<br />
